The Progress And Decline of tanki

I really really really wanna learn how to make tank textures for my tanks. :/

I have no idea how games make textures.

You unwrap a 3d model and draw textures based on the Uv with Photoshop, Substance painter etc. I hope you understand some of the terms used here.

Yeah I do understand the unwrapping and UV, but do I like draw them? Like every pixel of them? No filters, blending modes, or anything?

I've learned the basics of texturing from this and the 2nd part.

Please read this whole post, for anyone who is, following this topic!!

Quote from hazel

"Naturally this kind of topics start to popping, spreading guesses and rumors".

The reason why I made this topic is because, the devs have been messing around with the game we all loved...

You keep changing/removing our favorite maps, re balance the physics. (which is good sometimes, but the devs do it way to much.)

You (hazel) said there still would be the old tank for years to come, however I messaged semyon, (in TO forum) He said that they would remove the old tanki, when unity comes in. (I don't know who to trust!?!)

I am just saying the devs fool us far to often, they fooled us with crystal boxes, they made 100 crystal boxes to increase multing. (Which had a lot of complaint from tankers, saying "TO MANY MULTS)  Which gave them an opportunity to remove 10 boxes with out to much complaint from the community..

Keep your word hazel, I liked that post because I liked what I heard, keep your word to it..

Quote from master and commander

Dr. Stephen Maturin: By comparison, the Surprise is a somewhat aged man-o-war. Am I not correct?
[Everyone in the room freezes in horror.]
Capt. Jack Aubrey: Would you call me an aged man-o-war, doctor? The Surprise is not old; no one would call her old. She has a bluff bow, lovely lines. She's a fine sea-boat: weatherly, stiff and fast... very fast, if she's well handled. No, she's not old; she's in her prime.

That is kinda sad that Unity development gone dark recently and there are no information around to rely on. Naturally this kind of topics start to popping, spreading guesses and rumors.

Let's clear-up few things. Please note that I am not the one who makes all the decisions and some things might change in future, but here how it goes right now:

  • Tanki Online Unity is a new game. It might have even its own name. But this is not the update, it is a separated product.
  • Tanki Online Flash is planned to be updated constantly at least a year or two. As long as player's interest will be there, the game will be there.
  • As long as TOU and TOF are different games when you talk about "transfer" you talk about actually doubling player's garage as long as nobody will ever remove your stuff from the old game.
  • In this case if there should or should not be a transfer is yet to be decided. But please don't think like we are going to take everything away from you. The question is what are we going to give those who are going to play the new game. Devs are not insane to place all their bets on new unreleased game and ruin what is working and bringing in revenue.
  • The new game ain't going to be World of Tanks or Armored Warfare or War Thunder rip-off. This is going to same Tanki.
  • Our goal is to transfer gameplay and physics as close as it possible. Realism and tank physics simulation is something we never put on top of gameplay, we are not going to change this approach.
  • And maps are going to be same small tight battlegrounds, we are just adding some scenery to the background. Picture playing on Rio with authentic backgrounds? Something like that.

So umm... this is just my personal opinion, but it is going to be cool. Old game will stay as it is (less new features, but what can you do) and the new game will hopefully kick in. I think about this whole unity deveopment thing as if the game is Counterstike. Old one is still out there, you know.

I can accept what you have said and respect that you took the time to clarify a few points.

I can also accept that Tanki does allow decent enough communication between the developers and the players which you don’t get with a lot of other games.

That being said, I think what has contributed to the confusion and rumours  is Tanki’s poor handling of the situation. It was Tanki who muddied the waters regarding the two different products. If it is a separate product then it should have been kept separate from the start.

Will there be a way to switch from the current Tanki to the new version? Or will players have to start from the beginning?

The new Tanki and the current version will both exist at the same time.

You will be able to play any of the 2 versions.

You will also be able to copy your account from the old Tanki to the new one, but only once.

This will copy your rank, crystals and garage.

After that you will be able to play both the old Tanki and the new version

There have been a few different topics regarding certain aspects of the game and the replies from Tanki’s moderators are usually along the lines of “developers are too busy working on unity”,  “tanki doesn’t have the manpower to deal with certain issues because of unity “ .

If it is going to be a new product then really telling players of the current game that developers are busy working on its replacement rather than addressing the current issues is not good enough. I know Tanki has thrown out a few improvements recently but I am sure a lot of flash players will wonder what other benefits/ improvements  could have been achieved by now if the developers were focused 100% on the current game eg: (mults, cheaters, hackers).

Current players were excited, they were led to believe something exciting was coming and we were all going to be a part of it. They had more patience because they felt it was going to be worth it for a better game. Now if flash is going to be run as a separate entity, then really any benefits or improvements that come with the new Tanki are of no concern to the flash players unless they abandon their current account and start over.

I guess flash players are starting to realise that they are going to be continually the poor relation to unity. It is inconceivable that Flash players who don’t abandon their accounts will be given the same consideration and support as the  unity version which is going to be Tanki’s flagship for the coming years.

So rather than being able to celebrate Tanki’s rebirth and move forward in unity (pun intended) we are going to be witness to its slow demise with battles becoming fewer and fewer and chat eventually falling silent.

Personally I had a feeling something like this could happen so I decided not to put any more money into the game a while back until I knew more but I could certainly understand any recent buyers unhappiness with the recent news. They will be kings of an empty castle. Personally I got my money’s worth so I am not too concerned.

Ps: Granted the decision has not yet been made regarding transfer but it is no longer definite either.

Will there be new maps in Unity?

And as long as we still get the option to play this current version of Tanki too, and as long as everything doesn't get removed from our garages and everything reset back to M0, all will be fine in my opinion.

That is kinda sad that Unity development gone dark recently and there are no information around to rely on.

Then it should have been announced NOW and not a YEAR prior to, because as Satan'sRotweiler said, "If it is a separate product then it should have been kept separate from the start." Once the your attention shifted fully to the new, then marketing could have been started. The whole process kind of reminds me of TO 2.0. We could have waited to see the sneak peaks of the Unity until NOW and not months prior.  It is understandable to keep players attention on the up and coming updates, but with such a big one. announcing it too early is a bad thing. I'm not blaming you Hazel, and I'm sure its a administrative/CM thing you had nothing to do with, I just find the way you phrased that ironic: with the way players are feeling and why this topic was created, we're just sad for you :P

It might have even its own name.

Call the English/European side Tanks Online.

Tanki doesn't translate right. I found this game on a site called MMOHut in 2011 and the reviewer couldn't help but making fun of the name. Chalked it up to "baby talk" (example) where i, e, and y's are exaggerated. For that reason, I rarely suggest the game to my friends. And If I do, I call it Tanks Online.

Devs are not insane to place all their bets on new unreleased game and ruin what is working and bringing in revenue.

If this was bringing enough revenue, then why is it necessary to look to a Unity version?

Bear in mind, I'm just inspecting this as any other frustrated player would. They would then ask why certain issues or certain implementations (like friends list into chat system and more Daily missions) couldn't be expanded on prior to the new platform. Although that's beside my point: am just reassuring/pointing out that this move is to innovate and potentially increase revenue. The cost of return players mimicked garages into the new version might be overshadowed by the potential.

And maps are going to be same small tight battlegrounds,

"Same small tight" describes the popular maps? I don't know how different or similar our descriptions of map size are but all I'm worried about is if there will still be larger, complex maps, much like the ones used in eSports. There is demand for them, not just within eSports.

There are multiple areas of pressure to get people to buy crystals. Once people notice what it means to have more power with better supplies, equipment, micro-upgrades, etc. They either give in and hand over the credit card or keep it to themselves and work through it. The game wouldn't survive without the people who don't pay. I wouldn't say those players stop at Brigadier, I'd say around Major. Once people have passed that they generally go farther. The one year, short term kind of gamers wont get passed Major.

Even with the new graphics, the current monetary system is what is going to prevent the longer term players that may purchase several times to be prevalent. The fact that there is a sizable amount of players that don't make it past a certain rank should be a red flag. But I digress, Unity is not the knight and shining armor for the game. It will bring out the broader audience(progress), but people will see through the purchasing pressures just as they have prior. More change with the new platform will be key.

The problem is simple: at lower ranks the cost to buy a tank is relatively cheap. When you progress it becomes hideously expensive.

As I noted many times on the forums it can cost around $700 USD to "buy" a fully upgraded tank - paint, turret, and hull all MU to M3+.

At low ranks the equipment is very cheap so it is more plausible to get out the credit card for what is essentially a $20-$30 tank at that point.

But what fool spends $700 in real money by the time they reach the high ranks just to upgrade their tank?

The choice at that point becomes spending thousands of hours grinding away at tanks just to get the small rewards in battle, or, spend real money.

The frustration mounts as you reach higher ranks because of the vast amount of XP needed to rank coupled with the great imbalance of power. Mixing ranks in battle along with mixing M1/M2/M3 just makes it worse.

Fewer battles = less opportunity to win crystals = more of the imbalance.

It won't matter if Unity is the best thing since sliced bread with parts flying off tanks when they get hit or weather effects or whatever else might be possible - the imbalance (through drugging and uneven power of turrets) and high cost is what drives people away eventually.

I am amazed that someone could actually say this with a straight face.  In the very same list you say that this is a continuation of the same tanki.  If garages were wiped it would only be a pretext to get rid of heavy investments.  It will never happen because it would be a terrible business decision and all the players who have spent hundreds of dollars, and would be most likely to spend going forward, would simply quit.  Technically the terms of service lets you wipe a garage at any time for any reason, but stop pretending that deciding not to do so is some tremendous favor.

More likely the devs will introduce some new more expensive currency, which can only be used on the new equipment or boosts.  In order to trivialize any current investment.
