Slow Down, and Read.

People read the title of a topic and assume they automatically know the entire contents of a thread and can make an intelligent statement about the contents of a post that they didn't even bother reading.  It happens repeatedly, and quite often half the threads discussion is based on the threads title alone. That, or the title and the first paragraph.

 

If you can't take the time to slow down and actually read the post, what are you even doing on the forums? It seems even our own mods don't even bother reading the contents of a post before deciding to trash it sometimes.

 

Would you try for an exam by only reading the titles of your textbooks? No? Then don't post without reading the content of a topic!

No, I wouldn't, I'd rather go in completely unprepared than just reading the title of my textbook. And what was this topic about? I just read the word exam and got scared...

That thread only proves people read the topic, and that's why they were posting "what?" for the majority of the posts. It was because your original post was fully read, but you didn't make what you were trying to say very clear, so they were confused as to what you were trying to say.

Just a bit of logic/common sense was used for me to figure that out, maybe you should try it more often :)

The forum is on the whole an awesome place, but you just summed up perfectly the only bits about it that annoy me. It's true that a lot of these underthought posts come from a desire to have a higher post count. However, the forum would be a lot less active if it weren't for the post count incentive, so I'd say it's worth the trade off.
