Typical Online Game Lifespan

 Share

Recommended Posts

I've played several MMOs, and I noticed all of them are very similar in lifespan.

Stage 1, New Release:  A new online game hits the market, everyone's excited about it, popularity begins to rise!

Stage 2, Logical Updates: The game goes through a few stages where graphics and gameplay are updated through several revisions, the changes are generally an improvement, more content, or updated content. More people join the game.

Stage 3, Peak Popularity: The game is very popular and enjoyable, most people love the game, and there is generally a very large and pleased community.

Stage 4, Dropping Profits: The developers begin to notice a slight decline in profits, but instead of updating their game, and advertising more content, most developers counter this by adding more things to buy.

Stage 5, Quit Threads: The community begins to show their disgust at the attempt to drive more dollars out of their wallets, and so creates a large number of 'I Quit' threads.

Stage 6, Panic: The company flagship game no longer is the shiny example of enjoyable online entertainment, and is now sinking faster and faster into oblivion.

Stage 7, Stagnation: Most games stick around for a bit before they are finally closed, but without the money or excitement to drive updates, the game remains mostly the same, usually making just enough money to keep the servers online, this stage usually lasts around a few years.

Stage 8, Closure or Remake: Dark Orbit went the remake option, EA just straight up closed Need for Speed World and BattleField Heroes. The remake is almost never as popular as the original, but it can sometimes go through its own cycle.

Do you think Tanki is following the typical MMOG lifespan? I personally think Tanki is currently in Stage 4.

Between stage 4-5, however, Unity is coming, and the success of the game will lie in Unity. Unity could bring Tanki back to stages 1-3 for a while.

Ehh...I'm not so sure I agree. After all, the English community is only one part of Tanki, and although you might be seeing an awful lot of 'I quit' threads here, you really have no idea how the Russian or Brazilian communities are faring. (Unless you happen to speak both Russian and Portuguese.) Though yes, I think a successful launch on the Unity platforms could go a long way towards increasing the game's popularity.

You've no idea. The owners of " I quit " threads are so addicted to the game that they don't leave. And no need to panic.

I really don't think the number at quit threads is that high right now, if only you could see the number of quit threads that existed on the old Dark Orbit forums.

The remake has been in the making since 2011, when the announcement of "Tanki Online 2.0" was made. The flash version has been going strong for longer than the developers planned, which isn't a bad thing.

The forum was darker in late 2013, when the moderation went berserk and 2/3 of us left.

tanki is at stage 5 i suppose because well i see a new topic everyday

Nah! Number of people quitting is not even comparable to number of people who join each day.

Tanki is currently in stage 4-5. But with Unity comming it could go back up to stage 1 which would be a nice thing.

Unity just needs to transfer accounts over first, otherwise it could all be pointless.
