Profile Pictures -- Please

Recommended Posts

Good morning/afternoon/evening/night. Please select the one that applies to you.

Ever since I joined the forum (that was last month, I still miss the nubs *sinks into nostalgia*), I've noticed two things about the system: 1. The forum permission clearance thingy and 2. The lack of avatars.

I've been on other forums, and they all have profile pictures available to everyone, regardless of whether they're a moderator, a general user, or Sir Administrator. But it's a different story here.

The staff get their own bobby heads, but even then, they can't chose to have a pig in military fatigues ( hogree , I'm looking at you), or a penguin in tank driver gear, or a unicorn dressed up in a military uniform. In short, I'm suggesting that

WE SHOULD ALL HAVE CUSTOMIZABLE PROFILE PICTURES.

( coloured in gold and written in large font for maximum impact)

Just as we're not allowed to call each other nasty names or post cheap porn in Off-Topic, there will and should be rules governing what pictures we can use -- and what pictures we can't. Here are the ones I can think of:

  1. No personal attacks aimed at any particular user
  2. No pornography
  3. No discriminatory words

Great, you think. If we scrap avatars and release profile pictures to the masses, how do we separate the noble staff from the common riffraff?

Colour codes, and tags.

Have you ever looked at the community index, which is at the very bottom of the forum's main page. If you're typing N-O on that rickety membrane keyboard of yours, go to the main page and see it for yourself, then go back to reading this thread. If you're typing Y-E-S instead of N-O on the same, rickety, old keyboard, then you should know that each particular troupe of users is represented by a certain colour:

Red for administrators

Orange for forum moderators

Green for regular users like you and me

Cyan for chat moderators

I don't know the rest, because if there are any, I haven't seen any of them. If we apply the triage system to the usernames that pop up in topics, then we can identify members of staff.

Now onto tags. They're ubiquitous in forums we see nowadays, and forums without such a feature are becoming the exception, not the norm. Here's the absolute basics of the system:

For every post a user has, he gets a tag for that post. So LHamster would have five tags.

That's it. If you have any constructive opinions, feel free to tell me in the comments. Oh, and one more thing: Don't use this topic to pick a bone with me, or start a raging flame war. I'll report you if you do.

I feel the risk of inappropriate pictures is simply too high.

I agree. *sigh* I wish AI could identify inappropriate pictures...but that simply won't happen for a very, very long time...
