Define osmosis.

Correct me if I'm wrong but with my limited knowledge of biology (well, osmosis isn't purely biological since I've studied it as a colligative property in physical

chemistry) but osmosis is a generalized concept and not only valid for water but even other liquids.

Osmosis is the movement of solvent from higher concentration to lower concentration through a selectively permeable membrane. The solute particles exert a pressure of P=cRT on the membrane due to which osmosis occurs. c is the excess concentration of solute, R is universal gas constant and T is the temperature.
