Guide: How to create a good story in a logical way

Recommended Posts

Some seem to believe that writing a story is a piece of cake – But it's not!

Basically, a story should be, umm... ; Logical... No matter what, if a story is funny or adventurous it should be indeed logical.

Moreover, some stories are made up of thousands of words. And these words need to be neatly stacked in a pile so that the story would make sense. My guide may not be much informative or useful, since scores of you all tankers know much of this, but my guide may help some of you who are interested in planting some supercalifragilisticexpialidocious and rational stories... 1sm084thumbsup.gif

(Please take in note that my article/guide will be better for long or medium sized stories)

************

1. Think of your stories Genre/Genres.

One of the first step in order to create a story. What should your story be based on? Mysteries? Adventure? Suspense, Action or Horror? It's not easy to think all this, it requires some time. A story may also have multiple genres which can make it more amusing and interesting to read. Just think, if a story has only action, action, action and action, would it be much good? No, unless you don't put some serious talent in it or if the story is short. smileys13.gif

2. Do some thinking on what should happen in your story.

Basically, after thinking your stories genre or genres, you might believe that's it better to start fixing out some characters. However, before this, try to brainstorm on what should happen on your story. If it is based on mystery, should it be based on a boy who is trying to solve a mystery based on stolen jewellery? If your story is based on adventure and action, should your story have some men who are sailing a dusky sea and fighting pirates throughout their adventure in order to rescue someone or find hidden loot? This will all depend on your thinking, and if you have racked your brains a bit then thinking the characters would be pretty easy!

Remember: • Whatever would happen on your whole story, it would be based on your starting. So do summarise a bit on what should happen on your story.

• The middle part of your story and the ending part may be the moments when the good characters would struggle due to some problems. Take this in note.

• Don't summarise the whole story. Just think 5 to 6 lines on what should happen, that's it.

• Should your story have a bad ending or a good ending? It's your choice! However, good endings may be better, but it would depend on your stories genre... Ex: If your story is based on horror, a bad ending may not be much of a bad choice.

3. Throw some characters in thoughtfully...

Time for the fun part!   :) After you have followed all the steps above, think out some characters. Your characters should be based on your stories genre/genres since it would be pretty weird if a milkman is the villain on a horror story.

Take in note that stories are captivating when there are also some bad characters (villains or antagonists) who would try to befall harm to the good ones. Try to think of some cool characters too, you don't want a boy named Diego who would always roam around forests and act so dumb!   :P

Anyways, remember that the characters should be based on our stories genre/genres? Yes, a detective might be good for a mystery one. An Evil robot can be good for an Action and Suspense story, (It would be better for a movie   ) for comedy stories a character with a funny name and funny personalities would be awesome, but like always, this would be based on your imagination.  :) And do lay out the weaknesses, personalities, hobbies, powers, best friends, basically anything of your character. This will make it easier for you to lay out more characters and keep progressing your story.

4. Who should be the narrator of your story?

Not much thinking on this step, but there needs to be a narrator for your story. Should it be a character or not?

Ex: On Diary of the wimpy kid, Greg Heffley narrates the story.

Your choice anyways.   :)

5. Think out the starting, and make it based on your stories genre/genres.

On step two I have already told to you all to do some thinking on your story, but just a bit. Now on this step you need to think out your starting, and make it similiar to how you thought your story should be based on step 2. Your stories starting should be imaginative, do some thinking and keep on adding ideas. Don't forget to introduce some characters if there would be some on the beginning. Remember that the ending and the middle part of your story will depend on how your starting would commence.

6. Decide what should happen in the middle, and what problems the characters would face.

After thinking the beginning, decide the middle part. The middle part of your story would be your books heart, if it would be boring, your book would be boring too. At this moment your main characters should start to get into trouble because of a problem. Your choice.

7. Ending, duh...

If your ending ends well, happy ending then. If it ends bad, so sad.

If you want your story to have a bad ending, do some thinking. Don't be so freakish and make all your characters die in a split of a second!

The opposite for a happy ending, but please make it interesting and not so happy because that would be too uncanny.

8. Read and Edit. (This is an optional step)

Your story hasn't finished yet, you still need to read your whole story again and standardise it more and erase all the mistakes you have lollied in. But please, if you wanna publish your book/story for the whole world to read, don't be such a couch potato and forget to revise the thousand words you have written. There may be loads of mistakes in them!

You can also exchange some adjectives and verbs with idioms or even better words.   :) Grab a thesaurus or dictionary, or you can even use google if you want to!
