Welcome tankers!

In this interview, we will be meeting with a prolific eSportsman. As you can guess, his name is @joostcool. He has had a fascinating career- from being a tanki-player since the early days of the game, participating in the legendary clan Noob Army, and being an eSport Official, his story will not be dull. Read more to learn all about him!

Welcome joostcool!

To start off, would you mind telling us a little about yourself?

Thank you!  I am joostcool, I am a player of Tanki Online for almost 5 years now. Throughout those years I had a couple little breaks, after which I came back to Tanki. Before I became staff, I was playing in topclans from the past, like The Mighty Midgets and Noob Army. During that period I was a commentator for a long time. After a while, I was invited to join the CyberSport mods in January 2014. During those years I have experienced many staff positions, but now I am back where I started, in eSports! I find privacy of my personal life in this game very important, so I am sorry that I cannot go in depth about it. A little basic information: I live in the Netherlands, I do have a job and to put my personality in perspective: I am an adult.

Awesome!

I understand that you have been around the game for a while. How did you first come across tanki?

My little brother brought a friend of his home. That friend introduced Tanki to my little brother. When I came home, I saw my brother playing a tank game. I had never played a shooter game at that time, so I loved it. I created my own account and I started playing. It was a great experience!

A relatable way to begin playing :P

When did your interest in eSports begin? What were your first experiences in this particular facet of Tanki?

At the rank of major I started getting M3 equipment. That was also the time that I found the forum. On the forum were a very few clans and I decided to simply try some out. Since then I have been in many different clans over the years. I really loved the teamwork in a clan. Those clans have taught me a lot about gameplay and taught me some skills.

Wow, you really have been part of eSports for a long time. What was the game like back in these early days? Did you like the way it was?

Back in the days we had 2 different tiers of weapons. Tier 1 was smoky, firebird, twins and isida. Tier 2 was thunder, freeze, ricochet and shaft. Tier 1 was always worse than tier 2. For example a smoky M3 was worse than thunder M0. However, it was really fun to play! But new updates came and every single time people complained a lot, not realizing that it was better for the game. I'd love the devs to put the older version of tanki, so people would see that the game has become better instead of worse.

I miss those old days. Can you explain your involvement with teams and clans during your entire career? Which of the clans/teams that you have joined stand out in your mind?

Shadow Strikers was the clan in the very first beginning of my clans career. It was 1 of the best clans back in 2011-2012. When it got closed, I joined 1 or 2 other clans. After those I joined TMM, which was an all-Dutch clan. They were still at quite low ranks at that time, but we grew rapidly and became 1 of the best clans in the English Community. After a while I became the leader of it. It was also during my time that we closed it. The most important clan in my career was Noob Army. With that clan I won "Lucky 7" which is 1 of my highest achievements.

Noob Army! I didn't realize you were a member of that clan!

At what point in time did you join the ranks of eSports helpers?

It was just before the transition to StarLadder was announced, January 2014. I was asked if I wanted to do it, but it would require me to leave Noob Army. I chose for the CyberSports Mods, and I don't regret it

That must have been a hard decision.

I understand that you left the game and returned. What motivated you to return to Tanki?

I left the game because I did not have time anymore. Little by little I got more time and sometimes I still checked up on Skype. said that he would like me to return to eSports, so after a bit of thinking I joined eSports back.

Over the course of the game, which update do you believe has made the biggest impact upon Tanki Online?

That's definitely the rebalance in update 114 (- http://en.tankiforum.com/index.php?showtopic=164617 -). It was a very positive rebalance of the hulls and weapons statistics, that removed the tier 1 and 2, and made weapons of the same modication (m ) equal. All players got the value of their garage back in crystals. I think that update was a really important update for tanki's future. I made a video of what I bought with the crystals that I got back:

Ah, the rebalance. Unlike you, I made some outright horrific purchasing decisions.

Do you believe that the game is improving? Are you looking forward to the introduction of Tanki X?

I have mixed feelings about the current updates. Some of them are better for the game, some I am not sure why they were implemented. Some updates missed their goal completely (Anti-flood in lobby), some really were for the better. About Tanki X I try to stay as neutral as possible. I don't have enough information to give a judgement on it, and I would like to try the test version first before I give my opinion on it.

That's my opinion as well.

In the future, do you expect to see the eSports aspect of Tanki growing and improving? What is your opinion concerning the end of star ladder?

Considering we're at a zero level with eSports at the moment, there is only room to grow, so I am sure eSports will grow, especially with Tanki X, which will most likely have a clansystem implemented. So you can have my word for that.

The end of Starladder was not that bad, since it was not english-friendly, but the players are getting sick and tired of a changing clansystem. The last 2 years we have had 3 different clan systems. It is time to have a solid system that is good for the future and that stays, so clans can start building and see themselves growing.

Do you have any advice for tankers preparing to get involved in eSports?

Make sure to pick a clan that you can get along with. You should be on the same timezone and have the same equipment. Also, from experience I can tell that a clan that is aware of every aspect of the rules won 50% of the tournament already; Many clans fail to read them in detail, leaving them with technical losses and stuff, so take a drink, sit down and read them carefully, it is definitely worth it!

Last but not least, does the name joostcool have any special meaning ? :P

Well, joost is a typical Dutch name and 'cool' speaks for itself, eventhough I can assure you that my name is not Joost :D But what the real meaning is, is not something I prefer to spread everywhere

Alright, this concludes the interview. Thank you for your time, joostcool, and happy holidays!

Thank you, you too! :)

I'd love to see devs do that sometimes in future, even if its not the full old game, just the basics so people could have the old experience, just like with any of these old vintage games we still find ourselves going to from time to time
