The Greatest Problem In Tanki

Recommended Posts

Tanki has many problems, as we all know. In all sections of the forum, discussions are raging about this and that. Most talk about the drugs, others, about the "stupid devs." In the fervor of these arguments, though, we tend to forget other problems.

Yesterday, I was playing on my alt with some friends in real life, when my internet started going wacko. This is not an unusual occurrence, and can usually be remedied by a small break from the battle. I told my friends my predicament, and left the battle. Having nothing else to do, I decided to be a "mod" on the chat, acting like a know-it-all with my corporal alt. I sat around, doing nothing much besides telling a few people that "swearing is against the rules and will result in a ban," and providing links to the forum and the clan section. Then, it happened. There came a tanker with the most offensive nickname I have ever seen. The first thing he said was a censored word. He then started a whole spew of words that would've have gotten him banned for a month had a mod been there. I quickly took a screenshot, and reported him. Being the loud-mouth that I am, I couldn't just leave it at that, I had to go back and tell him that he had been reported and would be blocked for an extremely inappropriate nickname. This of course, started him on a new bout of profanity towards me this time. He wasn't giving up though, instead, he began saying the most dirty things you could imagine to the entire chat. By this time, there were many other tankers joining in the conversation, most of them cheering him on. I stayed in en8, as he said the meanest things you can think of, insulting me and my religion, all the while using profane language. I spent an hour and a half on en8 waiting for the ban that never came. He kept right on swearing and insulting. Disgusted at his rude behavior, I left to go find my friends again. Even then I couldn't run away from him, he joined my battle and continued insulting me. Finally, my Tanki time was up and I exited the tab with a heavy heart. In two hours, a guy with a horrible nickname, and dirty mouth had not been banned. How was that possible. Later, I logged into the forum and saw that he had been banned, almost four hours after being reported. How is it possible for a person like that to go four hours without being noticed by a mod? Chat violations should be addressed within at most an hour after their making. I mean no disrespect to the mods when I say this, because I know that it is humanely impossible to keep up with all the complaints in one day. If they know this though, why don't they attend to the need for more workers. The list of en moderators is relatively small compared to the thousands of tankers playing each day. Does anyone have any ideas about this, because there needs to be a change.

Sorry about the long rant, but I feel very strongly about this issue. Feedback would be appreciated.

If you address the mods they will say...

I disagree. The mods do a great job of keeping the chat clean, but they can't do everything. They're just severely undermanned.

I know exactly what you mean, but unfortunately there is nothing we can do to address this situation. There are hundreds of thousands of players entering the game and using the chat every day, but only about a hundred moderators to watch over them. It may take some time (hours or even days) for a moderator to go on the forum and process all of the violations. Also, the severity of the violation doesn't affect the amount of time needed to get the player banned.

I know that the obvious solution to this is "hire more chat moderators". Well, the problem is that very few players actually have the personality and skills required to become a good chat mod. The application process is very strict, which is why very few players are accepted. And if you think about it - it makes sense. Would you rather have to deal with occasional swearing in chat and not enough mods to deal with it, or have a bunch of irresponsible kids working as moderators and banning innocent players like you whenever they feel like it?

Either way, this is the Ideas and Suggestions section. What are you actually suggesting?

They don't take reports seriously, IMO, they ignored my report, even though it had enough proof.

That's just how I feel, whenever I report.

If you follow ALL of the reporting rules, your report will not be ignored, unless there are not enough violations for a ban.

Although MODs are humans too, they don't need to watch TO for 24 hours everyday...they need to Eat,sleep, play and Study as well as modding  :D

But a few minutes ago you were saying..

If you address the mods they will say...

Wow, thanks for that. You contribute so much to this topic. Please stay forever and dispense your wise knowledge to us  :P.

Either way, this is the Ideas and Suggestions section. What are you actually suggesting?

I'm suggesting that somebody (not me because I stink at making good ideas) find a way to improve this situation.

Btw, could you keep an eye on this topic and remove irrelevant posts that people make, I have a feeling you'll need to.

I agree. Mods do a great job. I'd go so far as to say that without them, Tanki would not be here. Please don't misinterpret this topic as a place to bash mods.

Hi, and let me first thank KillerGnat for the compliments :)

As for the issues you encountered - MAFIOS0 did explain some of the problems we're having on our side as well. Mods are human volunteers who cannot devote 24/7 of their life to Tanki, they moderate servers for a limited amount of time each day, which can also be affected by unexpected illness, trip, family issues, school obligations, disrupted Net connection, laptop malfunction etc. Obtaining trustworthy and dedicated, tech-savy moderator with a lot of free time on its hands is also pretty heavy task - from approximately 50 applications only few applicants can be selected, and even less than that number can pass rigorous security check (after all, chat mods do wield a lot of power in this game which can easily be abused in wrong hands, so everyone cannot become chat mod candidate). We also have to make sure that moderators can cover different time zones and dozen of languages present in EN community - sometimes we need more than 2-3 moderators on the same server at the same time, since one human cannot possibly answer all the questions players are asking at the speed of the chat, often in different languages. And if that is not enough, after working on the chat they have to deal with Violation section on the forum which again takes hours and hours of work...

Ideal situation would be that Tanki develops a system that can pre-moderate and censor certain words during registration of new nicknames, a system that can also pre-moderate server chat, that would not allow endless registration of accounts belonging to the same IP etc - in short, a system that would deal with cause, not leaving to moderators to deal with all of the consequences of the current system, because human moderation obviously has its limitations. All in all, please be sure that on our side we're doing our best, and I can only apologize for the situation you found yourself in.

Just a straight short answer as an addition,

we can't possibly ban every offender the moment he offends, disregarding how bad the violation is, simply we aren't around 24/7..
We have to deal with everything altogether and even though we have priorities, it doesn't change the fact that we cannot deal with every violation the moment it happens. Some offenders we stop right on spot, some we catch later.

Banning an offender in a matter of hours is actually good considering everything written above.

Well why did the mod banned Draze Temur and nikhil.... They weren't trading account and the trader isn't banned?
