The lonely Christmas day (story)

‘Twas the night before Christmas, and a morepork was hooting in the tree above the road, watching the man stumble home. He was around forty, and had a scruffy beard. His clothes were ripped and his nose was red. He had a black eye, and the remains of his blood nose were still evident on his shirt. As it always was, the man had gotten into another fight this Christmas eve, but he was to drunk to care. A heavy stench of whisky surrounded him, and his bloodshot eyes let people know that sleep was not his strong point. In fact, it never had been. Ever since the act of murder and violence that had taken away his family. His parents. His brother. His wife, still carrying their unborn child.

The man turned right onto a side road. He came to another road and without looking, stepped into the path of a car. The car slammed on its breaks, and came to a stop within a metre of the man. The man wished it had gone those few metres further. He wished that he could die, be taken away to a better place, or to no place at all. Anything seemed better than the living hell that he was forced to face everyday. The man kept on walking, talking short, unsteady steps, while the driver of the car yelled at him. Told him to go home to his family. He just kept on walking.

All around the man there were lights shining. Lights that tried to illuminate everything, make everything seem better, make everyone seem happier. This man knew otherwise, His heart was black, and shuffled along the path, while people avoided him. The man turned left onto the main street, where stores were shut, but lights were on. The man shuffled on. He walked and walked, until finally he came to a house. He turned in to the house, and unlocked the front door. The man entered his house, and crashed onto the floor.

He stayed there along time. He closed his eyes and thought about life. He had seen the worst of it. He had nothing anymore. His only friend was the bottom of a beer bottle, his wife had become whisky. He hated drinking, and so he drunk to forget that he was drinking, until he was to gone to stand. He thought about what his wife would think, how his family would feel. He had thought about this before. He would never think about it again. He had shamed them, but he was going to make it right.

Slowly, the man lifted himself off the floor. He dragged himself to the bathroom, and splashed his face with water. For the first time in a year, he got his razor and he cleaned it. Then he shaved and dried his face with a towel. He went and sat on his couch to watch some T.V, but as he turned it on, he found himself looking at an AA ad. It made him feel guilty, as it had always done, but this time he kept watching. He found a pen and paper and when it was done he wrote the number down at the end of the advert. He went over to the phone, and as he dialed the number, he couldn’t help but notice that he felt lighter. Better. Happier. Lonely still, and sad, and all those other emotions that he had always felt, but he was on the right path. He was going to make a change. And the clock struck twelve.

‘Twas the night before Christmas, and a man sat at the pub. He was here for old times sake more than anything, but he didn’t feel the need to drink anything. At least, not anything alcoholic. He figured they couldn’t blame him if he had some water, or maybe some juice. He thought about his family, and what they would say. How they would feel. He knew that he had made the right choice.

This is a reminder to us all that as we go into the Christmas/New year time of the year and we meet with family, remember the people that have no family. Think of them as you go into this time of year. Because one day that might be you.

That is what I say, copier...

Haha, you wish. I always say that in chat, it's just that no one knows what it means so I tend not to use it. For example, I was in a Noise Battle and my friend Ranger077 got a Capture, I said 'Noice!' Then he was like, 'You mean Noise? We're in a Noise Battle...' That's why I tend not to use it in Forum.
