I've recently noticed a number of topics in the Off Topic Discussion forum basically directly copying articles and contests in the newspaper. While it's great that the newspaper is inspiring people to try and write, plagiarism is not appreciated and it would be nice to see some originality. So, if you still want to use things from the paper, here are some suggestions:

• If you want to use a format/idea you've seen in the newspaper it would be polite and courteous to ask the author for permission to use it. Also mention you have permission at the top of your article!

• If you are going to use a format or idea from the paper, put your own spin on it, make it your own, don't just copy it directly and if you think you can improve it by changing something, do it! A great example of this is here: http://en.tankiforum.com/index.php?showtopic=242849

Additional side note: If your ambition is to be a reporter someday, being original is a key part of the job! Remember that the impression you give now is something that will be remembered when you apply, so take your time and make sure everything you make public is of a high standard! Treat each article like it's a Reporter application!

I don't believe the TWG has copied you for a while, outside of the first two or three issues. IEMB's guide on broccoli went a little far though.

You insult my gnatishness by saying that we are "at each others throats." Surely you must know that we gnats prefer to do things in a much more subtle way  :P.

Aaii ya. Could we just get over the fact that someone copied someone else's work and forget about it? I mean, while Yisroel is right, and we get a whole lot of attention, it's not as though it's good attention. Half of TWG has left because of this, including pengu, one of our leaders, and the topic has been temporarily closed. 

 

I mean, your points are good and all, but is it really going to harm you if they plagiarise? You have the power to hide topic, so you could do that. You also have the power to just post a link to the plagiarised topic and say that it has been plagiarised, and then the writer will be shamed, and you will be some amazing knight of prestige and honour. I just don't understand what the problem is, when this is a game, and in ten/fifteen years, you will have left and it might/will not matter any more.

 

My final point is that I am not having a dig at the reporters, because I respect your writing deeply, and seriously think that the stuff that you guys put out is mostly great. I am just disagreeing with the way this whole disagreement has gone, because the disagreement went from 0 to ten in no time at all.

Right! Perfectly explained my opinions. I'll also add that the reporters have sort of been putting all the TWG writers in one pack, even though very few of us were plagiarizing.

Well, I had some free time today, and i see this. And 80 new posts on the closed TWG.

All that I will say is don't through me under the bus and associate me with the other half. All of my stuff was 100% original, and if I did use a quote from the Newspaper, I credited it, like what I did with Sheddies law of inverse hulls or whatever. Don't worry, I plan to write an essay on it later, because that is what I do. So my thoughts will be expressed there.

I mostly agree with the reporters, however I must say only a few users were plagiarizing. Not gonna name any names, but it WASN'T BTRB, KillerGnat, Penguin, BDT, Marc.jp, or Pdox.
