[Issue 49] The Logic Challenge #1: Vulcan Users are Noob

 Share

Recommended Posts

Are you a logical genius?
Can you pick apart faulty reasoning?
Do you have what it takes to prove Vulcan is not noob???

OK well technically, even if you do have what it takes in terms of the last question, that's unfortunately not the task. Hehe. However, what you can do is show that all my amazing arguments for the noob-ness of Vulcan are flawed. Essentially, your task is to find what's wrong with these arguments. Why, you may ask? Well, this is how it'll work...

- This contest started at 19:00 UTC on February 23rd, and the topic has been updated with the arguments! Get thinking!
- You have one chance to submit your answers to the following logical conundrums.

- These answers should be submitted by PMing me. Do NOT post the answers here.
- The deadline for this contest is 00:00 UTC on March 1st.

- This is a difficult contest - it starts out easy, but then gets very tough towards the end.
- Technical rules regarding prizes and the scoring system:

- Those who get a score of 10/12 or higher will be well rewarded, in order of who submits their answers first:

     - 1st place: 30,000 crystals
     - 2nd place: 20,000 crystals
     - 3rd place: 10,000 crystals

     - 4th-6th place: 5,000 crystals

- If anyone manages to get that near-impossible full marks, I'll personally arrange to throw 5,000 extra crystals onto your prize.
- However, if less than 6 people get a score of 10/12 or higher, alternative prizes for all those who do not get all the answers correct will be used (so don't worry, if you get all your answers correct you'll be awarded according to the above prize pool).
- The alternative prize pool is as follows:
     -
1st place: 15,000 crystals

     - 2nd place: 10,000 crystals
     - 3rd place: 5,000 crystals

     - 4th-6th place: 2,500 crystals
- These prizes would be distributed to those with the highest scores - where scores are tied, the player who submitted first will be considered to have the advantage.

Don't worry, you will not have to use technical terms such as logical notation or the specific names of logical fallacies; correctly describing what's wrong with the arguments will be sufficient. Note that the titles of the arguments do not count as part of the arguments themselves. Good luck!

N.B. My use of 'logical fallacy' (or logical flaw) in these questions concerns formal logical error - when used, I am not enquiring about the truth of the statements made, but only about whether the argument logically follows. This means that the only question potentially concerning the truth or falsehood of statements made is Question 2 - all others ask about logical issues, not whether any of the statements are true or false. My arguments are also made up of statements (premises), and conclusions inferred from these premises are clearly indicated by a ∴ (literally meaning 'therefore') symbol.

Also note that you will do better if you focus on submitting more correct answers than if you focus on answering quickest. Your score will be considered first and foremost - only where two or more entrants get equal scores will the order of submission then mean anything. Whilst this could affect whether you get a prize or not, you definitely need to get some answers correct to have any chance in the first place!

Warm up questions (worth 1 point each):.

1. What logical fallacy invalidates this argument?

The Ultimate Argument for the Noob-ness of A Vulcan User (What do you Mean it's Logically Fallacious No it Isn't Pls):

All noobs are human,
Vulcan users are human,
∴ Vulcan users are noobs.

2. What makes this argument inconclusive?

The All-New Ultimate Non-Fallacious Non-Animalist Non-Inanimate-Objectist Argument for the Noob-ness of Vulcan Users:

All noobs can be correctly described as 'noob',
Vulcan users are 'noob',
∴ Vulcan users are noobs.

More challenging questions (worth 2 points each):

3. What logical fallacy is present in the structure of this argument?
The Argument from GoldRock's Pro Emotions for the Noob-ness of Vulcan Users:
Night-Sisters denies that Vulcan users are noobs,
GoldRock has chosen to 'cri' in response to this assertion,
If Vulcan users are noobs, then GoldRock will always choose to 'cri' (he will 'cri everytiem') at Night-Sisters' ignorance,
Not knowing the true extent of Vulcan users' noob-ness, Night-Sisters possesses ignorance on the matter,
∴ Vulcan users are noobs.

4. ...and how about the logical flaw in this deceptively simple one? (Note: there are two possible correct answers, both of which will earn the marks - one is easier to get, but discovering the other will help you with a later question. You can submit either.)
The Conclusive Argument as to Why Vulcan Users are not Better Players:
Better players necessarily have more skill than worse players,
Vulcan users don't necessarily have more skills than worse players,
∴ Vulcan users are not better players.

Very difficult questions (worth 3 points each):

5. How is this argument logically flawed (2 points), and how could it be fixed (1 point)?
Why, as Worse Players, Vulcan Users Lack Social Skills:

If Vulcan users don't necessarily have more skills than worse players, either all players have all skills possible or Vulcan users do not have all skills possible,
If all players have all skills possible, then Vulcan users have all skills possible,

All players do not have all skills possible,

∴ Vulcan users do not have all skills possible,

If Vulcan users do not have all skills possible, then Vulcan users lack skills,

Social skills are a type of skills,
If Vulcan users lack skills, then they lack skills in all types of skills,

∴ Vulcan users lack social skills.

6. Identify one logical fallacy in this argument and state where it is present (1 point); identify another potential logical fallacy in this argument and state where it is present (1 point); and without removing the final conclusion, which line(s) could be removed to make the argument both potentially logically valid and true (1 point)?
GoldRock's Master Argument - Why Vulcan Users Have No Friends:
If Vulcan users are noobs, then they are not perfect,
If Vulcan users are not perfect, then
they lack bonds of mutual affection,
Either Vulcan users are noobs or Vulcan users are
not noobs,
Vulcan users are not perfect,
∴ Vulcan users lack mutual bonds of affection,
A friend is defined as a person with whom one has a bond of mutual affection,
All Vulcan users who lack bonds of mutual affection have no friends,
∴ Vulcan users have no friends.

How this contest came about:

I blame Night-Sisters.

So, why is this topic open? For discussion, that's why! Feel free to discuss what you think the arguments might be, argue over who amongst you is the best logician, or to suggest possible titles and subjects for future contests in this series.

This is going to be a bit difficult, are we allowed to use actual mathematical logic or something?

because I know some stuff in that

You're allowed to use whatever you like if you think it will help, as long as you ensure your answers are clear.

Sorry, didn't understand it quite well. Can some please explain it to me

There are questions about arguments that you have to answer, which challenge you.to.find weaknesses and logical errors. Currently, the arguments are not in the topic. This topic will be updated with the arguments once the contest starts.

I hope I don't need to have a knowledge of Vulcan at higher ranks, because that would put me at a disadvantage. <_<

Nope, it's purely based around finding the weaknesses in the arguments that'll be provided. Despite the theme, no actual knowledge of Tanki beyond Vulcan being an in-game weapon is needed.
