You start building in the middle....

 

 

 

 

 

 

The placement should look like this by the 8th round:

 

 

 

 

 

Once you have your 5 monkeys set, you put the spikes at the joint (as shown in the lower left). Then you build your row of spikes up to 5.

Use speed upgrades for the spikes. Don't waste money on distance.

 

This is the backbone of my strategical placement.
