What exactly are warning points and how do they appear on a forum? Right now my posts include "mtbarden3" "0 warning points," which I know is a good thing. However, how are they obtained? Just rule breaking?

Yeah if you curse or anything like that you will get one. They are only a problem when they accumulate.

Warning points are a friendly punishment system used on the forum. If you break a rule on the forum that  is not quite bad enough to give you a ban, then we might give you a warning. The warning is given for you to know that you did something wrong so that you don't make the same mistake again, since many players violate rules without even knowing it. The warning stays there so that if you break rules later, we will be able to check how many warnings you got and if you have too many warnings for the same violation, then we will give you a ban.
 
There is no specific threshold on how many points you can receive before you get banned, but if you learn from your mistakes and don't break the same rules over and over, then you have nothing to worry about. :)
