What unique foods have you Never tried or you would like to try?

Mhm yeah, a lot of people get that impression to be fair, and some more famous Indian foods are spicy - but a lot of them aren't!

Butter chicken in particular would be a great choice, try ordering that with some naan bread, it shouldn't be spicy and really does taste very flavoursome. One of my favourite dishes, good place to start! You could also ask any friends who've been to local Indian restaurants what their favourite (non-spicy) dishes there are, Indian cuisine is huge and varies from restaurant to restaurant because each region of the sub-continent has its own specialities.

As for Palak Paneer, I would personally recommend trying that once you've tried the typical favourites - it has a rather particular taste, some may not like it at all. Might be best to start with the conventional stuff such as butter chicken, yeah. I would also personally recommend trying a 'Dosa' (large Southern Indian flatbread), usually served with various chutnies in quite a few Indian restaurants; if offered you should inform them of your desire to avoid overly spicy food too since it's often served with a spicy stew (that I tend not to eat), just in case!

Loving your posts around here!  :)

For me, it's mostly a few fruits and vegetables I've never eaten. I've mostly eaten many of the Indian foods (being Indian) and a lot of Mexican, Italian, Chinese, and bit of Korean.

I'd like to have -

  • Rambutan
  • Passionfruit
  • Tacos
  • Avial (south Indian stew)
  • Grapefruit
  • Quesadillas
  • Gnocchi
  • Blueberries
  • ... many more

Hey, Bydo. Here are the websites of the two of the best local Indian chefs -

  1. www.sanjeevkapoor.com
  2. www.tarladalal.com

Thanks, gotta admit I am a bit of a foodie haha.

I've eaten the ones in white previously...

- Had passionfruit once or twice before, whilst it sounds kinda cool it doesn't taste as good as it sounds - it tastes alright, but has all these seeds in it and can be pretty sour!

- Tacos are awesome, best one I've had was when I visited New York for 4 days, not the healthiest ever in terms of fat content but it's really good awesome-tasting comfort food (like a lot of Mexican cuisine! I'm personally a bigger fan of the similar dish enchiladas, not too difficult to make either dish though),

- I eat grapefuit pretty regularly, can be sour but it's great eaten in halves with the actual fruit cut out using a knife and a decent amount of sugar sprinkled on top,

- Blueberries also don't always taste that good, some can be quite sour, but if you get hold of some high quality ones they can have a really good sweet taste - although, I would marginally prefer cranberries (which we grow in my back garden along with raspberries and blackberries) 'cause they look more awesome and have a sharper flavour xD

It can be spicy sometimes (more so in India), but often in Indian restaurants in the West it's prepared so that it's not spicy on purpose - and actually, I personally find that butter chicken with a creamy tomato sauce tastes much nicer than the spicy variety. Just leave the chilli out (or use it very sparingly), and it tastes awesome without having to burn your mouth out in the process.

Although yeah, it's generally good to check how spicy the food you're ordering is at an Indian restaurant, 'cause each one does stuff differently. But my experience of butter chicken made at restaurants over here is that it's generally not that spicy at all.

I don't know where I can get grapefruit or passionfruit. I don't think they are grown much in India. I've gone to imported food stores in my city but didn't find them. Blueberries.. I'm yet to eat them whole, I've eaten blueberry muffins and jam. I cannot find any decent outlet for Tacos in my city, but my mother knows how to make the shell so she might make a few one day.

@GoldRock, have you eaten Maharashtrian food? :D

I want to try Durian

No you don't, k. I've had it about 6-7 times, and each time I have a renewed loathing for it.

And tbh, there's nothing that comes to mind regarding the OP. I've had my share of weird things like spiders, mashed up tadpoles, grasshoppers, dog, cat, rat, pong tea cone (you don't wanna know, trust me), some rotten fish paste that had been sitting in the sun too long, and cow intestine, so finding more foreign delicacies doesn't sound like the best thing for me right now....

Maybe elephant meat though .

o_o

for grape fruit ..its like a cross between a orange and a lemon. grapefruit is a citrus fruit grown in the lower USA ..and can be pink in side or white ..you would need to acquire a taste for it..its sort of on the bitter side..i eat more the pink its not so bitter..it can have sugar or honey can be drizzled on top you can eat it like a Orange and peel it or eat it in half with the sections to scoop out..they are about  the size of a large base ball .. or bigger...the outer skin is yellow or with a pink flesh tone on it..

i'm kind of surprised that you can't get it in your area..if you can ask the grocery stores to bring it in and most will if there is a large demand for it..we get stuff from around the world in our stores ..you just need to go to those stores to find what you want ...( there is a few items not allowed into Canada but its only a small amount ..over all we get a lot of stuff from all over the world ..)

As I said, there are a handful of imported food stores, but I didn't spot grapefruit there yet. Might be available somewhere though. They've started growing some foreign crops for urban areas here, but mainly vegetables.

Have y'all eaten Alphonso mangoes? Most of them are exported by my state in India. :D

To the op:

Talking about Indian food, don't be afraid. You should always try something new. You can't be afraid of Indian food just because you think it's spicy. Only a few of them are. And you can eat something sweet anytime if you eat something hot. There is a variety of Indian sweets too!

There are a lot of Asian cuisine restaurants in many Western countries - you need to go abroad more :P

Hm yeah, they probably aren't... Well, good luck finding and trying those foods in the future, I guess xD

And I have, haha, thought it depends what you're referring to in particular!
