Hand of Blood: Pitfall

* * * Solikamsk, Russia, 0500 hours * * *

Third Lieutenant Alexei Ivanov had been asleep when the attack began. Everyone had - even the sentries, not that they would admit it. The bombs started going off at 4:00 A.M., and the artillery began firing shortly after. By now most of the base was nothing but rubble, but at least the bombing had ceased. Alexei hurried towards the front line, preparing to relieve someone. To his surprise the commanding officer, a brigadier, stopped him. "I don't know who is attacking us, lieutenant, but there is something here that cannot be allowed to fall into enemy hands. You are going to escape, and take this with you." He handed Alexei the briefcase. "But sir", Alexei objected, "You are the commanding officer! Shouldn't you escape?"
"If I am gone, they will know immediately that I am fleeing and the attempt will be in vain. This is the only way."
        "But - "
        "That is an order, lieutenant!"
        "Yes, sir."
Alexei turned and hurried down the hallway that led to the garage where the tanks were parked. He cursed as he tripped over some debris and fell. That probably saved his life, because just then a shell arced down from the sky and exploded on the roof, causing it to collapse and crush the tanks. Wait - I parked my tank outside behind some trees, Alexei thought. And a good thing too - all of those tanks are now buried under three feet of concrete... Slipping through a hole in the wall, he came up behind two soldiers. He slammed the handle of his gun over the head of the first one, then knocked the other out by swinging the metal briefcase into the side of his head. He brushed the snow off of his tank and climbed in - the two soldiers had come within 5 meters of the tank and never noticed it. He was gone by the time the sentries came to.

The Commander, leader of the attacking forces, eyed the officer coldly. "It is gone? You searched the entire base?"
"Y-Yes, commander. We couldn't find it anywhere."
"Bring me the highest ranked prisoner."
"Yes, Commander", the officer replied. He hurried off, eager to escape that icy gaze. He returned shortly, bringing with him the brigadier. "The prisoner, Commander."
        "Where is it?"
"I'm afraid it is no longer here."
"Don't lie to me. I know it is here. Where?" The Commander's voice cracked like a whip.
"Not here. I sent it with one of my officers, he is long gone", said the brigadier defiantly.
The Commander spoke again, his voice deceptively calm. "Officer, bring the soldier in charge of the sentries to me."
        "Yes, Commander!"
The officer returned, with him a nervous looking soldier.
        "Sir, I - "
        "Silence! Did anyone escape?"
The man hesitated. "Well, we found two of our men unconscious, and, uh..."
        "Out with it, you imbecile!"
"W-We found some tank tracks leading away", he stuttered nervously.
"And NO ONE thought it fit to TELL ME?"
        "I, er - "
        "You failed. You FAILED!"
        "N-No, please, I - "
Before the officer could finish, the Commander drew his sidearm and shot him.
"Back to your duties, all of you!"

Alexei looked around nervously. That briefcase must have been really important, I think all of Russia's top military personnel are here... The highest ranking officer in the Russian army, a generalissimo, stood up. Before he could speak, though, the video screen at the end of the table came to life. On the screen, a tall man in a dark uniform stood beside the brigadier, who was tied to a chair. The tall man spoke. "We are the Red Hand. You will surrender to us, or we will attack Russia. You have 24 hours to respond favorably, or we will begin our assault. Oh, and here is a warning." He pulled out a pistol, and shot the brigadier. The camera panned out, and they could see ten more soldiers, and ten more prisoners. Ten more guns fired. Cries of rage and shock rang out around the table. Alexei felt sick. Now we know who we are fighting - monsters.
