The siren wails. Familiar orange words hover at the top of your screen. A heady rush of nerves and excitement tightens in your chest. You throw yourself into the desperate hunt for the drop location, panicking a little more with each passing second. Then, there it is. A Gold Box!

In and of itself, a neatly-wrapped, thousand-crystal package drifting out of the sky is a pretty dramatic event. Occasionally, however... one does more than just take a gold box. Every so often, a tanker wins a gold box with style and did-you-see-that! flair. Nearly everyone has a truly amazing, crazily insane, or pathologically lucky gold box story; unfortunately, most of these moments go uncaptured, living on in memory alone.

Until now, that is.

This contest will test the limits of your memory, goldhunting, and most importantly, your ability as a storyteller.

The Task is to write an account of a truly amazing, dramatic gold box take you've made during your Tanki career. I'm looking for an edge-of-your-seat moment, and storytelling to match. Describe the events with detail, make it seem as if I am there myself, watching the screen with you as you have your moment of glory.

Entries will be judged on quality of writing.

:excl: The Rules  :excl:

-Wordcount must be 700 or less.

-Reserving posts is prohibited

-One entry per individual.

-You must write about a real gold box take; no fictionalization of events

(Now guys, I have no way of enforcing this and must take you at your word...but please, please be honest.)

Tips:

Include as much detail as possible. Set your scene, include the map, and your location in the map. If you like, you may include an illustration to help set the scene. (A good resource for this can be found here.) A dramatic telling is of the utmost importance, so 'I flipped and took gold in Serpuhov. The end.' just isn't going to cut it.

Prizes

1st place: 25,000 crystals

2nd place: 20,000 crystals

3rd place: 15,000 crystals

The deadline for this contest is September 30th, 23:59 PM UTC+0. Good luck!

What if you do have a photo? Beacuse a picture is worth a thousand words you know.

Ahh... The contest limit is 700 words, so a picture would be too much. :)

Time: Noon

Place: Work

Server: EN3

I sit in my office in front of the 'workstation' closely watching server chat scrolling past hoping to spot any 'six key' tankers amongst the grannies chatting to each other, after a few minuits, I see one! My eyes light up, I quickly click the link and enter the battle expectantly, the battle is instantly filled, an excellent sign if there ever was one.

The map was Polygon, a few seconds later the siren sounds and a familier piece of golden text appears. I had my ultimate hunting weapon already equipped, Dictator, I quickly pressed for my double armour and speed boost then I started searching, the battle was full, everybody had crowded around a single area between two buildings, I quickly joined them; and saw the unmistakable sign that 1000 crystals was about to fall from the sky, I wasn't expecting to earn those 1000 crystals for I had never been particularly good at catching them, even less so with this many people...

1000 crystals began falling...

it was inches away from a perfectly positioned Dictator

he exploded

I pressed forward

a Hornet was now on the drop zone and the gold box inches away

he exploded...

now the gold had setteled inside his carcass, only three out of the eight tanks were alive thanks to a Firebird who had Double Damage, we were all pressing against the poor Hornets carcass, I steered slightly pushing the Firebird away, then a second piece of golden text suddenly apperred! 'electroux1 has taken the goldbox'. I congratulated myself, thanked the tanker who had dropped it and left.

THE END

OK, OK, I know this catch isn't a particularly 'Epic' catch but it is my best one but the contest clearly said 'Entries wil be judged on quailty of writing', in the mean time, lets hope I catch a slightly more 'Epic' gold before the 30 of September, OK?

THIS IS NOT MY FINAL ENTRY.

Nice! I've caught a decent number of goldboxes for my rank. Do you want us to include a screenshot or something so you know we are telling the truth?

A screenshot isn't necessary, though you can if you want.

Also does it matter what type of gold box take it was? I've caught quite a few in STGs, and those wouldn't exactly be considered a normal gold scenario.

The type of scenario doesn't matter as long as it's about a dramatic gold box catch - but do remember it should be intense, exciting and dramatic! If your STG gold-catching fits the bill, then by all means go for it :P

Here I am, at home, nothing else to do but play a video game while every thing around me is nonetheless, physical.

"It's been a while since I've caught a gold box," I tell myself "the battle fund is over two-thousand!"

Time goes by, boom-boom, uhmmm-screeee, shwwooo, thunder, railgun, fire bird.

It's getting boring, I kill, you kill, I kill, you kill.... I kill

I spawn, then an orange banner appears   "GOLD BOX WILL BE DROPPED SOON"   I picture an atomic bomb... shock, panic, then...

Movement, movement of everyone, I kill, you kill. A siren wails, I kill, you  kill... Everyone's screaming, "MY GOLD BOX!"

Then an eerie silence. We all watch The Box fall out of the sky. I kill, you kill, I kill, you kill. You kill, you kill, you kill, you kill.

I can still picture the scene, its only for a second, eyes are wide, heart is racing. Twins.  Isida.  Smoky.

I'm by my favorite spot to catch gold, the path to upper floor from blue team's flag... Now I'm suddenly by my self, everything is what it is, but me.

"Push the forward key! Push it!" I didn't

"Push it!" I won't

"GO!" I'm scared

My dictator slowly lurches forward, then gains its speed, everyone is already at the drop.            I kill, you kill.      I glide onto a viking, then throw my self at the gold, lag.       I see a rival, he's halfway vertical, trying to gain ground, like me.

Nope, not today. I push the smoky-hornet away with my shovel-like dictator front, finishing him off with a final shot. He flips.

I apply a final repair kit, I'm taking damage, then the gold lands on my hull, slowly rising then disappearing into the air.         I catch.

"lost8302 HAS TAKEN THE GOLD BOX"   flashes across the screen. It stays there for an eternity.

Like every gold box catch etiquette, I receive death threats, and congratulations. And numerous gold boxes after that.

                 THAT is my story.

Tanki is worth something. Go catch one.

When I clicked on an actual battle in the normally parkour-ridden Year 2048, I should have known something incredible was about to happen. The game itself was a first- I had never played a real game on this map, so I was caught in the moment. This was not a normal battle, as I had just gotten hornet M3 the day before, and was getting used to what was my dream combo- Hornet and Thunder. The first battle was close; I think the final score had the teams within two flags of each other. The game ended, and I decided to stay, with my mind wholly on dominating the next round. The second game started, and within the first three minutes, my team and I got three captures.

Then, something that had not even crossed my mind happened, as an orange message appeared across the top of the screen. I then looked at what I was equipped with- a low health hull, a high, self-damaging turret, and a paint that did not protect a bit from Thunder. At this point, it was too late to change my equipment. I spawned in, and quickly equipped a double armor while starting to search for the yellow and white marker somewhere on the massive map. I was sweeping my team's base, and rather quickly got to a bridge. That is where it was. A few teammates were nervously waiting for the right time to make a move, so I joined them. I was nervous an enemy would kill me, so I went down a ramp, away from everyone else, waiting.

As the parachute appeared, I sprung into action. I drifted around the corner and up the ramp, with the noble ambition of jumping on top of a teammate and easily gliding underneath the gold. I jumped…off center. Disaster struck as the corner of my tank hit the corner of my enemy. My beloved new hornet violently jerked to the side, and I ended up wheels up. My whole body groaned, and I just knew there was no way I could take this gold. Luckily, I decided to not self-destruct, in hopes of getting a nice view of the pile for the gold. Then, I looked back at my tank, and realized I had somehow managed to stay on top of the teammate that flipped me.

My heart fluttered, with a fraction of a spirit welling back up in me that I could get the gold. My teammate, of course, drove over to the gold, with me in, or should I say on, tow. I was lucky here, as he got to a great spot. My tank suddenly twisted around, so it was laying in a perpendicular direction on top of his. I shot backwards, with the plan of somehow getting my tank upright- but something even better happened. My tank went vertical, long ways facing up. I was trapped in between four tanks like this, and looked to the ground below me to realize that I was squarely in the center of the drop zone. I raised my camera angle, to see a parachute covering up my tank. I then instinctually turned my turret to the ground, and shot. The kickback from the shot, combined with the explosion of the Thunder shell launched me up in the air- and brought down my health to about 1/16 of my total. Luckily, I timed it just right so that I rammed into the gold box.

The relief hit me as I saw the magical phrase "Jwimmer has taken the gold box" appear above me. After the tanks cleared and I respawned after self-destructing, I started to think about the incredible event. This was my first time playing a real game on this map, the first gold I had seen on the map, and, most importantly, my first gold taken using Hornet M3. To add on to all of these firsts, I finished first place. This was an incredible game, and one that remains, to this day, one of my all-time favorites.

A Dramatic Gold

in Polygon

I was running around healing people with my Isida M2 and Hornet M3. I wore Emerald, the golden paint of that time. Back then, I was a mere Lieutenant General. I couldn't keep my Isida beam held on to people if they were doing circles nor I could land a jump. As said, I was roaming around in a Polygon CP, healing anyone I saw in my path. I went to the top, then to the so-called Island, then back again. I would keep Vulcans and Twins firing forever. Sometimes, I would go heal a Shaft that was providing good fire support.

Suddenly, it happened. The deafening siren rang as many tankers went straight for holes and outlets of the map in order to self-destruct. I, for one, stayed at the top. I was full-health and all of my supplies had already been cooled down. I pushed the 'P' button and awaited the passing of 5 seconds. Once those terribly shaky and hour-like 5 seconds passed, I went full-supplies mode and began my search for the golden mark. My adrenaline was sky-rocketting; my hands became sweaty and and were shivering to so much extent, I couldn't even control my tank. I looked on the bridge, then went back to the middle. After searching through the middle, I drove around the corners of the map. After searching and searching, I went to the middle once again. I couldn't find it, the lag was taking over. Tanks suddenly flew out of positions and got back to their original places again, their turrets kept rotating and quite weirdly, were firing continuously, as if someone has coded a no-reload hack. Tanks were leaning over walls on the edge of the map while still connected to the point. I looked down at the bottom-right of my screen. 999 PING. I raged like never before and was about to smack down on my keyboard when somehow, someway it cleared off. Tanks went supersonic. Plasma balls flew everywhere. It was a lag spike.

We could see some people gathered around on the Island; so the place became my destination. I drove ahead. By now, I could see the Gold dropping far away on the Island. At this time, I was driving around in the middle, surrounded by tanks double my size. I began to drive as fast as I could and two seconds later, I reached the ramp. My tank was being constantly pushed from all sides when all of a sudden I was pushed down by a fat Mammoth. The Gold box had already reached the halfway mark.  There were drugging Titans and everlasting Vikings. One in particular, was a tanker with Hammer M3, Dictator M3 and Zeus that was still behind me.

People started firing upon each other. Each side delivered their best. I could see Smoky's criticals popping up every now and then. The Gold was nearly close to the ground where a Ricohet-Mammoth was sitting right underneath. As a last stand, I reversed and drove ahead in full speed. I hit the ramp as fast as I could in hopes of getting onto someone when abruptly, I hit a mine. I went flying into the air. Then I saw two Hammer shots directed towards my tank. I was spinning so fast, my camera angle couldn't keep up. I was taken away, my heart pounding, fingers full of sweat. I went flying over the wall and into one of tanks on the other side. There was so much dust and smoke, I couldn't see nothing as if my vision had been completely impaired.

I landed into the self-destruct zone on the other side. I was so shaky, I didn't even care to see at the top of my screen nor at my crystal count so that I can verify my Gold. Did I pass through the Gold box? Was it really mine? Did I miss it by inches? Did I... Was I not careful enough to take a picture? All sorts of questions were rattling my head.

I respawned three seconds later and looked above right away. There were the golden words:

DestroyerPdox has taken the gold box

Here is my entry;

It was the start of the New year in 2015, when a perfectly normal First Sergeant (i.e. myself) joined a perfectly normal Serpuhov CTF battle. I went to battle with one of my not so popular combo of Hammer and Hornet. Usually I always start off a Serpuhov CTF joining the blue team. So, as always I joined the blue team in this battle as well.

My team started off pretty well capturing the flags. The battle fund was rising at a considerable speed too. The battle went on for like 5-6 minutes and the battle fund was also 1000+...Then, all of a sudden there came an adrenaline-rushing sound of a siren that kinda reminded me of a fire truck, but more intense.

Along with the siren came a string of words that certainly wasn’t similar to “anti-tanker-GT has captured enemy flag”. It was one of the rarest string of words seen in any battle; “Gold box will be dropped soon”. To tell ya’ll the truth, I, in fact, didn’t even know that there were things called gold boxes in Tanki (ok...ok...I was a noob too back then). I started to believe that Golds actually exist only after one of my friends told me so (honourable mention- tweezers).

So I raced around the map searching for a drop zone, and EUREKA!!! I finally found the place. I didn’t tell anyone about it because I did NOT want to ruin my first gold box. Then, out of nowhere there came an opposing rico-wasp with a curiosity that did NOT fit my liking.

So the shadow started falling onto the ground and I presumed that the gold was too (common sense let me down when I got excited). The annoying rico started shooting yellow balls of doom and annoyance at me. All my hopes went down, and my only hopes were the remaining 2 clips of my hammer M0 (I happened used up one for no apparent reason). My health was draining really fast, and the gold was like only a couple of meters off the ground when this fellow was almost on top of me. I was traumatized to see this...but my instincts made me hit the space bar.

With the shot of my hammer, the puny wasp went and hit his tank face down. My hopes were all up again. I took a clear look at the gold box for the first time, and boy didn’t it look great! With a majestic “2015” printed on it, and a bow tied around, this gold box was the perfect gift given to me for Christmas by Tanki.

So I did some showing-off in front of the helpless wasp and finally took MY FIRST GOLD BOX. Just then the unfamiliar string of words in orange appeared on my screen again. This time, with a twist; “anti-tanker-GT has taken the Gold Box”. I felt a surge of excitement and contentment go through me, like the feeling you get after eating a really, REALLY good chocolate. The whole chat flooded with congratulating remarks. Occasionally there came a remark like “hacker” or “noob”, which I ignored.

So the battle ended pretty well...I got my first gold box, along with a decent fund from the battle, after we won it. Serpuhov became one of my most favourite maps since it holds the memory of my first gold box. Even though I don’t get many gold boxes I’ve had quite a few ’DRAMATIC’ gold box catches. However, this, was the most dramatic and exciting one out of them, which is why this memory would remain in my mind forever...

I believe there's around 599 words.

One day Rico sat down at his laptop and started up Tanki. He logged in and started playing XP/BP battles on RU1 using his PRO pass. He played Courage CTF XP/BP, and Polygon CP XP/BP. But something different happened with another game, different from the rest: Madness DM BP/XP.

Rico knew that with his M2 equipment, he would be under powered here. He joined anyway, and once his game loaded, started nailing tanks. He was nowhere near the top of the list, and his D/L wasn't that good either, even for XP/BP. Rico was casually taking a joyride on the bottom of the map, nailing anyone he saw. Suddenly, words lit up the top of the screen, above the action, as if saying "Ignore me, I'm just a distraction to the game!" But Rico thought otherwise. He drove a few meters and saw the drop zone. About five seconds have passed since the siren. Rico tried to jump, or drive, rather, behind a pillar. But it was too late. He got nailed with a Railgun. He respawned at the top of the map. He realized that he didn't know where to jump off the top, and it was already about halfway before the gold would drop! He also realized he forgot where the drop zone was! So he went to the opposite side of the top. He thought, "I don't know what I'm doing! If I'm wrong, goodbye Boar kit!" But his tank had a mind of its own. It drove right over the edge, like it was saying, YOLO! Rico knew he needed to shoot for recoil, so he pressed the spacebar. He landed right in front of a small group of tanks. He then knew the gold box could either come from the top of the bottom. He took his chances and drove into the middle, which would inevitably get him destroyed. But one of the tanks missed him, and the other one hit him, but through the other tank. Suddenly, like a pop-up book, the gold box came into existence. His tank was showered in minerals the color of butter, and Rico was very happy he got a gold box in a game like that.

---

The End! (The following is not part of my story.)

That is one of two times I got a gold box in Madness, and the only time using Railgun and Hornet. I got a gold box there another time, back with all the Super golds (Boy those were the best celebrations of the year), which I took from Claudiu_Stelist .

Well that was my story. I hope you guys enjoyed it.

Below the spoiler is the word count, excluding all this stuff below the story, and it also has a few funny comments.
