Frying your Cpu is pretty hard nowadays, the computer automatically shutsdown if it overheats.

I'm guessing you didn't use any thermal paste? Or didn't peel the plastic off the cooling plate?

Something like that, it was 15 years ago, I do not remember much of the details. I remember it was AMD Athlon. At that time, a good CPU, but he had difficult cooling.

My computer is old, and has been getting slower and slower loading web pages and running tanki. My FPS on larger maps rarely stays above 25.

So what computer should I get, or should I build one?

My minimums:

-Run Tanki at 40+ FPS on medium maps

-Quickly load websites, and not too long of a delay loading ones heavy with graphics

-Be under $400

-Be new- I don't want to risk getting a used computer.

-Have a desktop (not a Chromebook)

-Windows 7 or 10. Not 8. 7 is preferred, but I think that I can only get it if I build one.

I am fine with either a Desktop or a Laptop. I have a school laptop that is easy to carry, so portability does not matter for my personal computer. I am leaning towards a desktop, mainly for the purpose of a separate keyboard.

**I will not consider any Toshiba brand computers. I have had a nightmarish run-in with their customer service in the past**

Hi, Jwimmer.  This should not be difficult, you just need to know the computer specification according to the game requirements. The performance of computer depends mostly on CPU and GPU. That means you need to choose better Inter Core and Nvidia granphinc card. i5 CPU and Nvidia GTX series (960 is good enough I suppose)  are always good choices. But you may need more budget for this. If not, then you can choose one with i3 and GTX 720, 4 RAM.

In the long run, I think a desktop computer is better and you can use longer. In fact, I have a desktop computer and I just compose it by myself. About brand, I think LENOVO and HP are not bad, many friends of mine use these two brands, also you can take a look at others.

About price details, you can go to official site and know more. I am not very excellent in this part exactly.

Im looking at HPs, because they seem to be running cheaper than Lenovos. I found a review on PCword that said the HP 15t touch is the best laptop under $500, but am having trouble finding it for under 500 like the review said.

Any other HPs that people would recommend?

Another problem is that I am going to college for Engineering in a year, and will most likely need an expensive computer (prolly a Thinkpad) for that. Don't want to lay out too much money if I am just going to be using the computer for a year. Quite a sticky predicament I am in right now...

Huh, I guess that is up to yourself indeed. You can buy a computer according to the budget you plan first. And it doesn't mean that when you finish studying, you gonna abandon your computer forever. You can keep using it for playing games and many other activities.
