Computer Suggestions?

Recommended Posts

My computer is old, and has been getting slower and slower loading web pages and running tanki. My FPS on larger maps rarely stays above 25.

So what computer should I get, or should I build one?

My minimums:

-Run Tanki at 40+ FPS on medium maps

-Quickly load websites, and not too long of a delay loading ones heavy with graphics

-Be under $400

-Be new- I don't want to risk getting a used computer.

-Have a desktop (not a Chromebook)

-Windows 7 or 10. Not 8. 7 is preferred, but I think that I can only get it if I build one.

I am fine with either a Desktop or a Laptop. I have a school laptop that is easy to carry, so portability does not matter for my personal computer. I am leaning towards a desktop, mainly for the purpose of a separate keyboard.

**I will not consider any Toshiba brand computers. I have had a nightmarish run-in with their customer service in the past**

OK, I'll tell you my PC specs once I get to my PC..build one similar to it...its pro..

50+ fps on biggest maps, but with minimum graphics (other factors remaining constant)

0 delay of heavy graphics...can smoothly handle even the most heavily loaded website..

P.S: mine is actually a Business Built PC (if you know what it means)......so you might find similar PCs..but the performance would differ a LOT..compared between my business built PC and an exactly identical model of it...

Thus, in my opinion, if you're going to get a standard PC similar to mine, then upgrade some hardwares a bit

Building one is certainly an option.

https://pcpartpicker.com/

This website allows you to choose individual parts from a massive database and put together your own build, but there is also a 'build guides' section, where you can view builds suited to a range of budgets. On the left sidebar, you can try filtering it down to $400 to see what you get.

Lol, getting 50+ FPS on tanki with minimum graphics ain't a pro PC. Far from it.

Well, do you know how poor is my internet connection and how FAR I am from the servers?

If you had any other PC with these type of conditions, then you would not even get 20 FPS and <400 ping.......My old PC still provides such worse playing conditions....

and btw, by min graphics, I meant this, and not the actual "min" what people call it..:

Internet speed determines only your ping. FPS is determined by your PC.

Ik, ik...heard it 1000s of times, but I believe 100% only at what I observe...And I have observed that whenever I have poor internet, my FPS goes low to 30-40, and whenever I have an amazing internet, it's 55-60...Theoritically, I don't know how on earth it happens, but practically, my internet affects both - my FPS and my Ping..

For $400 you'd be hard pushed. Why not upgrade your old PC, a new GPU, RAM, & and SSD should work great so long as your motherboard supports all the new stuff.

Also, pcpartpicker.com is great for configuring new builds.

The problem with that is that I currently use a Laptop, which are not really conducive to upgrading parts.

I will check out that website. I have a friend that just built a gaming PC, and all of his parts was close to $1k, but it performs like something way more expensive than that.

Thanks for all of the suggestions so far!

Sorry, I didn't realise you were on a laptop, all I can suggest is make sure you get a decent GPU, I can get around 50fps on a 750ti which costs £100, also use an SSD as that basically makes the whole computer faster by allowing the OS to read & write files faster than a standard hard drive. Anything more than 8GB of RAM is overkill for TO.

Also check out some pc build guides by Linus Tech Tips on YouTube.

I am more than satisfied with Dell laptops, currently using my second Dell laptop. First gets outdated, so I bought a new one with six months ago. Dell Inspiron 5559 Silver, i needed stronger laptop for Catia and Ansys software.

I would recommend you (not just for playing Tanki) Dell Vostro 3558

CPU: Intel® Core™ i3-5005U Processor (3M Cache, 2.00 GHz)

RAM: 4GB DDR3L 1600MHz

HDD: 1TB; 5400 rpm

GPU: Intel HD Graphics 5500

DISPLAY: LED; 15.6"; HD (1366x768); Anti-Glare

420 USD is the price.

My old laptop had same amount of RAM and similar GPU as Dell Vostro 3558, but I had 50 FPS at small maps at high graphics.

Hmm, I will see in a few weeks if it I have enough for it.

Went to PC part picker, and started choosing parts. I came up with one that was around $400, but that is without the keyboard and monitor. Also, I am not quite sure how to assemble a computer. Thinking I will have to go for a laptop because they are a bit cheaper than desktops.

There are plenty of Tutorials on how to build a computer on YouTube. You are going to be Electrically Grounded in the process of building the pc if you don't want to kill the parts because of Static Electricity

Another problem is that I am going to college for Engineering in a year, and will most likely need an expensive computer (prolly a Thinkpad) for that. Don't want to lay out too much money if I am just going to be using the computer for a year. Quite a sticky predicament I am in right now...

but if you want to have better fps on medium-large maps you will need to spend a bit more or go with an AMD GPU with 8gb vram.

Luckily I made a build on PCPartPicker that is capable of both School and Games.

Better not do that alone. Especially if you're not sure. About 15 years ago I was assembling the PC (without Youtube help) by myself and I've done everything well. But I did not set up very well CPU cooling so I burned my CPU.

Services or professional people whose job is that does not take more than 20 to 30 USD to assembly the configuration. These 20 or 30 USD will save you effort and time and possible errors which could damage hardware.

Frying your Cpu is pretty hard nowadays, the computer automatically shutsdown if it overheats.

I'm guessing you didn't use any thermal paste? Or didn't peel the plastic off the cooling plate?
