Rank Number Eight To Use Chat?

 Share

Recommended Posts

I understand that for many players it's annoying that they can't use the chat yet. However, don't forget that alot of the newbies have so many new things to learn and so many new things to look out for that they won't even think of using the chat yet and just focus on learning how to play. If they're serious about playing, they will rank up soon enough. The 8th rank is still a rank that can be easily reached.

Precisely. One of the issues is that many players regard Tanki as an online chat room, not a game. One of the results of this change is that at least some of them will have to actually play in order to rank, and by doing that they'll perhaps change their perspective and starting seeing Tanki for what it is - a game. For the record, I was never interested in chatting myself, I simply played... it was never hard to rank when you spend hours daily just playing.

Accomplished players who have already attained the highest ranks, and who likely have multiple high rank accounts as I do (two Gissimo and a Field Marshall soon to be my 3rd Gissimo), can achieve MSgt in a handful of hours... Frankly, it'll only stop/deter new players. For experienced players....it's little more than a temporary inconvenience.

I beg to differ - it takes more than a couple of hours to get to Master Sergeant from the scratch. As for multiple accounts, it's fairly easy for mods to detect multiple accs of one player. When those start getting 6 months bans for bypass, players will not be able to afford spend days in order to make new account that is allowed to chat. I think the change will prove to be a good one...

well, i barely EVER see moderators in servers 6-11, they dont eed to make chat more resticted, they need to get more chat mods

I happen to know that some moderators work ESPECIALLY in the servers you just mentioned... we're monitoring the current situation and will adjust if necessary.

Beg to differ with whom? I never claimed that attaining MSgt took a couple of hours. I can tell you it's achievable daily....i.e. a "handful" of hours and a new chat-ready account daily.

If it is "fairly easy for mods to detect multiple accounts for one player" they certainly do not appear to care enough about it (and it isn't actually easy). Possession of multiple accounts is incredibly widespread. More sophisticated players use multiple IP addresses as a matter of habit. And those of us who have invested time and $ into several high ranking accounts would be justifiably upset over any attempt to undermine those investments. My guess it that Tanki looks the other way because those of us who continue to spend $ on Tanki make the salaries of its full-time staff possible. Well, that and the fact that Tanki membership would drop by at least 1/3rd if players with multiple accounts were forced to choose and use only one.

;-) happy hunting.

I dislike the new rank restrictions, as it makes it harder for newbies to ask questions(Which obviously a lot of them have). It might be better if the IP adress would be banned from the chat, instead of the account. But then multiple players in one househould would get problems. There is no perfect solution, I guess.

Problem with IP addresses is they are mostly dynamic and therefore they can not be banned. It is enough just to restart the router and voilà.

The answers to their game related questions are easily obtained by checking Wiki and Help pages of Tanki and they have enough info so far to start reading them. The rest of their questions (which are in majority) were personal and completely irrelevant to game mechanics so they'll survive without an option to ask them.

Correct. There are quite some new players that don't know about the wiki and help pages though. Yes, they are easy to find, but still.

They are informed through yellow messages. I know it's not the best option, but since we do not have any sort of Help implemented directly in the chat it would have to do. By the time they understand the game and its mechanics they would also get the option to chat, so chat works as a pretty logical advancement and expansion in their gaming process, not the other way around... it's how it should've been from the start imo.

As I said, they should have only done it for server chat, that's where all the problems where in the first place, I think they need to tweak it and make the in-game chat available for all ranks

Maybe it's impossible to separate them... And btw, we had more complaints about in-game insults and profanities in low ranked battles and since it's impossible for battle mods to monitor all battle chats all the time, this solution is perhaps good from that angle as well..

Just throwing my two cents worth into this issue...

One thing I noticed in this thread is that the people who are directly affected - the low-rank players - are not (directly) represented here. (Some have written regarding their low-rank alt accounts, but using higher-ranked accounts, which makes sense because using multiple accounts in the forum is probably more of a headache than it's worth...)

I have just this one account (Major General at this writing, for whatever that's worth...), so I don't really know what it's like to be a new player here under the new rules.

Each player has their own skills, and for a lot of us, it is not all that quick and easy to rank up, especially when we're new to the game. Merely doing the daily missions and a little (ok, too much...) chat takes a fair amount of time.

I do remember trying to find my way around tanki when I first started, and feeling a bit overwhelmed by all there was to learn.

I did learn a lot from the wiki, and I joined the forum somewhere around WO2, but a very large part of what I learned came from chat, especially server chat. There's something important about being able to ask questions and get answers quickly... much like the difference between having a good textbook and having the textbook plus a good teacher. The latter situation is much more efficient.

I can imagine a lot of new players, who now have no access to chat with more experienced players, just giving up in frustration.

It's pretty sad that some number of rogue players have forced the management to take these measures. I would certainly prefer something a bit less draconian, but I understand why they've done it.

Perhaps the developers could come up with a less drastic solution, such as making it easier to toss obnoxious players from chat?

A suggested solution:

Setting up an automated "/vote" system in server chat - if enough users "/vote" a particular player, the player is blocked from chat for some amount of time automatically, without the  need for human intervention. This could be set up so that only lower-ranked players can be tossed this way. Yes, there is potential for a system like this to be abused by bullies, but it would give access to chat to a large majority of the players who now have none.

Your comments welcome.

I honestly don't give a single crap about server chat, all server chat is people doing a bunch of name calling. But they never should have even touched battle chat, because sure battle chat is pretty bad, everyone trash talking and such, but server chat is where you get the scammers and the spammers, and honestly, the simple way to stop spammers is to ignore them, now I hate blocking people in any thing, but I just simply think, he will probably end up leaving the game, I'm going to list problems I've seen in public compared to in battle

Server chat

Scammers

Online daters

Spammers

Trash talkers

YouTube linkers

In-battle chat

Trash talk, and the simple way to deal with trash talkers is to use the ignore button, it's so easy to use, but people can't use it for some reason

Most of the content management and moderation in Tanki is done by humans and there is no indication that Tanki will develop an application that will automate the process, even though we did suggest something like that in the past. That being said, moderators are doing their best to do the job properly but were simply overwhelmed by the sheer number of violations done on the chat, made mostly by minors who weren't interested in Tanki as a game but were here mostly here to hang out... Kinda like mall rats... The way I see it, changing the rank limit blocked those who aren't interested in the game to misuse its other features.

Even though there are laws, police force, judges and the legal system in real life, humans cannot stop crime nor eradicate it since the beginning of time. What gives you an idea that we can do it in some online game? :D

Our job is to help people in this game and try to make their environment as pleasurable and relaxing as we can, but that's all we can do... We cannot simply Evanesco violators from Tanki - there will always be someone who will swear, insult and spam. Just like in RL...

Momma_Bear is in EN11 a lot. It's funny, all the low ranked people are friends with her and chatting with her!

Yeah making you have to be First Sargent to chat is a bad idea I mean if first time players need to ask questions how are they going to ask?! That's just plain out rediculous and bad on tanki's behalf I am thinking of quitting the game for this reason... sorry but this update is unfair to lower ranks and newcomers to the game!

Why did they do this, i know some peole can act like children in game chat, but restricting the game chat to people under level eight is too much, please reverse this, this restricts game chat, i have seven accounts, only two of them have are over that rank, if people kicked from game chat too much, THEN you should keep them from chatting until level eight, but you also should make there be 1 moderator in each chat, to get rid of online daters/spammers, i just want to be ble to chat to people without getting restricted, anyone at any rank can be a fool, please put back th old system back, because i have a feeling that they may make the rank even higher until they make it for only people who have beat the game will be the only ones to be able to use the chat

It isn't good at all I gotta agree.

Why do you have so many accounts? Just play on a few of them. And if you are experienced, it only takes 30 mins per account to get past that rank, maybe less.

And in those ranks, there is yellow writing on the chat which gives very useful tips and tricks for early ranks who do not know. These are a lot more important than just being able to chat.

30 mins huh   . . . i dont think so. I would like to see some proof of that in a 30 min video

I think that the rank restrictions for the chat are very dumb! One day I was using the chat happily then boom the next day I couldn't! Change the rank restriction down!; no higher than master corporal!
