Just as  said above. In addition, India is one country, but more than one language is spoken there. There are Hindi speakers, Kanada speakers, Tamil speakers, etc., but there are some common languages in which they can speak together. College-educated Indians can speak to one another in English, and many Indians can speak Hindi, even if it is not their native language. So, even though hundreds of languages are spoken in India, they are able to talk to each other on one topic.
