Allow quick equipment change

In my last post about the garage opening each time you die, nobody really approved of it other than me of course. I thought of something much better!

What if you could just change right then and there!?

I was thinking if you want to change from Shaft to twins, you'd hold down the 1 key, not press it, you can then use the left and right buttons to cycle through your owned turrets, then simply let go and it will load on your chosen turret after a couple seconds. For hulls, you'd hold down the 2 key and cycle like that. the 3 key for paints, the 4 key for modules.

But wait...players could abuse this to aid them in need! Well, a five minute interval will begin when you change one or more. Say you change to your Twins, you have to wait five minutes before you can change again, meaning in most 15 minute battles, you'll probably change twice only so it can't be abused. of course if you want to change again you can just use the actual garage to change.

And now, with the loading time, you won't be able to do this if you end up in a scuffle with no place to run...I mean who will sit for a few seconds in the open to change and die? It'd be cheap if you were killing an enemy and they changed to isida and sucked out your life and gained more meaning you die...not cool. besides, the button holding and cycling will also add on to that. Understandable right?

It will be easier than waiting for full minutes like me to be able to change my stuff, because you're loading up a few items, not everything you own. Just turrets, not turrets, hulls, paints, modules, supplies, kits...just turrets, or hulls, which ever one you're changing.

The changing animation while you're cycling through turrets could be like the tutorial how the turret/hull turns white and morphs to the next one. The animation could be the loading sequence, so once you let go of the buttons and have made your selection(s) you'll be on your way

Well, if you mean garage changing isn't disabled with this "auto change" I suppose it'd work. Another option would be just to implement the changes AFTER death, that'd be much better IMO.

Also, 1 is for repair kits. Maybe different keys? B for "one turret left" M for "one turret to the right" N for "confirm"

No, they try to keep the button configs to a minimum. They're highly against adding more buttons for controls. This would just be if you needed something right then and there. A last resort thing

A 5-minute cooldown is too harsh. Developers reduced it from 15 minutes to 1 as they believe that players should be able to change their equipment as they wish. Instead of having a cooldown, your feature would simply have the automatic self-destruct initiating if the player selects new equipment while they are still alive. That way they won't be able to just instantly get a new gun to help them in a particular situation as it will still require a 10-second wait and a self-destruct with respawning back at base.

No, no. This is a last resort option. If you need a certain hull or turret in a certain situation, the self destruct can't be implemented in this. This idea is for getting something done right then and there. Self destructing would completely destroy the point of this. And yes a 5 minute cooldown is a bit harsh, but the main idea is to allow players to change their equipment when they really need it without having to die. I repeat again. Self destructing CANNOT be implemented in this because it goes against the entire idea.

Maybe three changes for a three minute cooldown? We cant have the cooldown be too short for this as it can be abused easily.

Scenario

When playing in for example, a long range map, but one where certain weapons are favored with lots of walls like Magnum, Railgun, etc. It is annoying to have to switch all of your modules to short range weapons. It takes a click to the Garage, then the relevant section, which is the Protection section, then having to select each individual module then un-equip, which at the most is 3, that is one click to remove the module, and another 2 to select the new module and equip it (in the HTML5 version, anyway)

So.. What is the problem?

This takes up game time! You could be losing up to 30 seconds, including the time the garage takes to load and also the self destruct if you were playing mid-way. This could be the difference between winning and losing the battle!

So.. What is the solution?

Module Packs! Tanki Online gives us the ability to define combinations of modules that can be activated at the touch of a button! For example, one pack will contain Gauss, Thunder and Magnum module packs which can be customized if needed, and also named. Another can include short range weapons like Isida, Freeze and Hammer.

Additional idea - mandatory

But, when 2 modules of the same caliber (2 long range / short range for example) are equipped, protection reduces from e.g. 50% to 40% to keep it balanced for players of that range. These 2 ideas must be implemented together. The protection tax only applies when your module pack is enabled and equipped, not when you just have the modules equipped yourself.

Let me know your thoughts.

Not quite the same, and I did want feedback on the idea itself, but thank you CC. Could it be unmerged? Some feedback on this would be great.

Can we save different turret/hull/protection settings in the garage and switch them to a different setting using a hotkey?

Nice idea, I been thinking about a similar idea for a years.

But I think now with the speed of Garage in HTML5, the idea is no longer required or important like what it was. I have think about it in the past for a reason which is long waiting time for Garage.

I think implement this but do not allow equipment (but paints are fine of course) changes if you were hit in the last 5 seconds. I find this would be a simple way to eliminate people quickly swapping to some other hull or gun when they are about to die.

Of course, cooldown should stay as is.
