[Declined] Forum Nicknames

Recommended Posts

My Idea is that users should be able to have a personalized 'Nickname' on the forum itself. Like for me it can be 'Phantom' or anything I want to choose. When you go to a users profile you can see their in game name too, this nickname will only affect the name that appears when making a post. Choosing a nickname for the forum is just like choosing a nick in-game. No censored words or using already used names will be possible. Thus it would not require additional moderation.

yah? 'sup cedric debono?

That's precisely the reason why this most likely won't be implemented. Too many users will want to pretend to be someone else to ruin their reputation by violating rules and posting inappropriate stuff under their name. It won't affect staff because of someone has the name but doesn't have the avatar - they are obviously a fake. But it will definitely affect players.

3 Solutions to this

1) Get it under pre-moderation.

2) The Nickname can only consist of 1 word (Unlike 'Cedric' 'Debono' 2 words)

3) Nicknames can only be a cropped version of the in-game name. Like for 'Mafioso' it can be cropped down to 'Maf'

Why not have a Boys vs Girls game mode in Tanki? Although due to both genders making sexist remarks at each other during a battle, we would need a Moderator for that. But on the other hand I think it would be a fun game mode to participate it, and events of this game mode can be CTF, CP, and TDM.

This is not the right place for posting this, please create a new topic. Let's not go off-topic.

Although I highly doubt that it will ever be added. Many girls do not want to expose themselves due to a variety of reasons. It better be a game for both the genders, without any divisions. You can find a Boys vs Girls forum game though.

The first two still don't solve the problem. Mods don't know nicknames of all forum users, so while obvious nicknames like "cedricdebono" won't pass, it will still be extremely easy to get a nickname similar to that of, let's say, your enemy from a rival clan, and then go around the forum (or PM) posting hateful and rude messages to ruin that person't reputation.

And if nicknames can only be shortened and not changed, then I really don't see much point in having such a limited feature.

What's wrong with our nicknames now? I think this could cause, as Maf ;) said, a lot of confusion for players. You would not really know who is who, especially for new users. Some players, like that one internet troll we had a year ago ( I don't remember his nick but he kept making new accounts and spamming around remember him?) might pose as mods or admins. Like for example, you can make Yele with both a lower-case L and an upper-case I. And besides, someone might change their nick to exactly the same as another player who already modified their nick. For example, Mafioso changes his name to Maf and I change my name to Mafioso. It would just be too confusing honestly.

If the system ain't broke, why fix it??

Well for that reason, its just a nickname. If any player has any confusion regarding who is whom. They can just go into their profiles and see their in-game names.

I never mentioned that the current system is bad, change it!!11!1!!

I think it would be a cool addition. Especially for those big awkward names who spend most of their time on the forum but can't be arsed to spend 100k on changing the in-game nicks.

1)  hard to achieve.  will need to build a whole new system and db infrastructure around this and with that comes a lot more complication.

2)  uhmmmm, ohhhhkay

3)  doesn't that just defeat the purpose of what you wrote in the OP then?  I'm just gonna be Damn with that :( and not Damn_Slow_Wabbit as I would have preferred.

Also @jazz20 makes really good points.

For the moment we'll decline, but we're leaving the topic open and if someone makes a sensible justification we'll consider it.  Thanks for the idea though

For that I had also mentioned that, if a player... Umm no let me take an example.

A guy loves Damn_Slow very badly, and he wants to copy his name and show off on the forum (Let's just think you don't have any avatar)

He makes an account named 'PhantomInferno' and he logs on to the forum, choses nickname has 'Damn.Slow'. How would you know if he is you or a copy-cat. That is the time when the hover cards will show their pro'ness

Boom, now you know that who is the real player behind that fishy nickname, so you can't be fooled unless you want to be.

Now for the in-appropriate nicknames part. The forum currently censors some words to ******... (No I did not type anything). So that can't be same for the nicknames? I don't think that it is a great task to accomplish. I might be wrong as well.

Lots of hovering, not much elegant.  Though I do like the idea of being a NewspaperMod undercover

If not hovering. Then replace the 'Profile' thing with the in game name of the player which is a hyperlink to his profile (ratings).

And the ratings reveal identity any way.

^ more clicks, more tabs, more page loading, all these excessive things for basically no gain. That's pretty much what you're asking here. I do hope you understand such convenience for 1 player doesn't necessarily mean its convenient for all parties concerned.

Okay then, I'll do one last try.

Nicknames on forum will be available from Advanced group only. It means if anybody wants to have a fake nickname impersonating somebody, they need to rank it up quite a few times.

I sill think hovercard is not a bad idea, you just need to hover your mouse over the nickname to see the in-game name.
