Explosive barrels in maps

Interesting feature, but there's at least two problems I can think of:

  • Since Tanki uses and old game engine, the explosion effects will have to either look bad or cause lots of lag.
  • There isn't much logic behind having explosive barrels. Most of Tanki maps are set in random cities and villages. Why would there be explosive barrels there?

Similar idea: Destructible terrain

they can act like entities wich cant move and when enought damage has been given to them, they explode.

As far as I can tell this doesn't improve the current strategic situation of the turrets and hulls. This is what gives Tanki it's unique gameplay. Adding explosive barrels will make it less unique.

I dont think it will be OK, and as said, if tanki works on an old engine, the game will be ''vanished''.. there will be too much lag

Well no, it improves it a lot.

Also can you please repeat about tanki unique gameplay? Cuz of not having explosive barrels TO has unique gameplay?? Well no. Tanki X also doesnt have explosive barrels and gameplays are almost identical in both games.

 

Explosive barrels can be used as a trap. If you are firebird and see barrels next to your target you could blow up barrels and maybe even saving yourself, you could push druggers into these barrels and shoot them (If barrels deal a lot of damage, they will help)

If barrels are placed next to supply box you can use it as a trap by just shooting it at the right moment..

They can be used in parkour (Impact force from bottom)

I don't see much lag issues here

 

The most lag is created with things that move, or by shots/kills. The data of the tank locations, movement changes (left, right, brake, drop somewhere, ..) has to be transfered from the clients to the server and back to all clients all the time.

But such a barrel does not move and it does not shoot. So it creates ZERO traffic if left alone.

If it is hit then the data of the shot is transferred to the server, and if the server says it is dead (and only then) you get a message back, telling your client to draw a thunder-impact and that tells your client the harm that it caused (thunder damage logic).

 

Thats not bad. The barrels could respawn down or drop like creates today.

It would be usefull if the barrels are in some kind of non-mobile socket, so that a tank can not be at the location of a barrel when it spawns and that they can not be pushed around..

 

 

It could cause FramePerSecond drops if the explosions are spectecular.. but a few firebird clouds should do the job too.

Many, in fact most, other FPS games have explosive traps and barrels..Tanki already has mines so that kind of does the job.

 

I'm not saying the idea of explosive barrels is bad in and of itself, it would just change gameplay too much and force all the veterans to learn a whole new set of tactics.  Implementing this idea is equivalent to adding Gun-Towers in maps that fire at the nearest enemy tank.  An interesting idea that could bring a new level of strategy, but not really part of the "character" of Tanki.  It's just too big of a gameplay change.

 

I just think that the devs have a lot of work to do that is higher up on the priority list; ex fixing all the bugs and glitches in the game...

 

P.S. I apologize for my criticism, I know I am a hater. :D

This is really good idea.

I don't think they would cause too much lag if the explosion would be simple. If mines can be there, then barrels should be able to do so. Simple mine's explosion and some dust. But if some barrels would be next to each other they would explode like a wave? :P

This would be better for Tanki X. I also suggest that the barrels do some damage too, like that of a smoky round.

 

Maybe even different types of barrels from gas cans to large cylinder tanks and the bigger the canister the more damage it does.

 

Putting this in Tanki Online also can be done, but just without the actual container itself exploding and bursting to pieces and maybe just flames coming from it, or making it just disappear quickly during the explosion.

Can't do explosive barrels because of lag, but devs possibly can do homing rocket projectiles?

 

Something smells fishy.

I don't know what the devs can and can't do, which is why I never use lag as a primary reason to decline an idea. And as you may have noticed - this one isn't declined at all. The point about lag is my own opinion and I might be completely wrong.

I'm not saying anything against your comment, though, but it would make no sense if this idea was declined due to lag being the reason.

It might also be declined because it gives players an easy way to sabotage their own team in team battles, because all you need to do is shoot the barrels and they explode causing damage to your teammates. which would be very bad for maps like monte carlo.

If it was Deathmatch, then the barrels could be used to one's advantage.
