Winterblade: Chapter 1

Greetings, mortals!

I've decided to start a book and post the chapters here. So far I only have the first chapter (I'm a slow writer), but hopefully more will come. Enjoy!

•Achilleus

Aleksandar kneeled in the freshly fallen snow, concealed in the dying underbrush under a large oak tree, his dark purple eyes fixated on the beautiful stag nibbling at the snow-covered pine needles twenty yards away. His breath mixed with the winter air, a cloud disappearing within seconds. Arrow knocked and ready, Aleks raised his ivory bow, drawing the string back to the corner of his mouth. Focus. Its just me and the target. Nothing else, he prompted himself. Exhaling, he released. The arrow sailed through the forest, hitting the stag where shoulder meets neck. With a sickening thud and an agonizing wail, the stag fell without another sound.

Lowering his bow, Aleks walked over to where it lay in the now blood-covered snow. It was beautiful. Its coat was a dark coffee colour, in contrast to the soft white fur that covered its underside. Its warm brown eyes almost made him regret killing the elegant beast, but the thought of a warm stew changed his mind. Aleks grabbed the stag by the antlers and dragged it to a nearby stream, where his sled was hidden behind some fallen branches. So far he’d caught two rabbits, a few ducks, and the stag. Not bad for 2 days of hunting. Pulling out a small saw, he began severing the antlers. The task was strenuous, but Aleks had done it many times before on previous hunting trips. He opened his rucksack and placed the antlers inside. He moved on to the head, grimacing as the saw ripped through the dark flesh. He lifted the severed head, tossing it into the trickling stream. Orcs, wolves, bears. They all wandered these forests. Blood mixed with the icy water. That should keep them off my trail for a few days. Since he’d set camp two days before, an orc had found his sled and made off with his supplies. He had tracked it to its camp, where three others were cutting up a farmer’s cow. Killing them would be impossible, and he would have died in the process. Not worth it for cold beef and dry bread. A bitter wind blew around him, biting his pale face. Winter was coming. Only a few more days in this dreaded forest, then I can return home. Hefting the stag’s body onto the sled, he began the journey to Bryne.

Snow fell steadily across the tundra. Aleks had cleared the forest, and was now trekking across the frozen wasteland. His arms were sore from pulling the heavy sled, his legs aching from walking on cold, harsh terrain. Just a few more miles, he urged himself, I’ll be home before dark. Aleks walked on, the weight of the sled slowing him with every step.

About as short as a Wasp's lifespan.

Other than that, great job!  :D

LOL. Its supposed to be a kind of introchapter if such a thing exists (if not, I just invented it).

Thanks!
