The Christmas AS Format on More Maps (& Clan Battles)

 Share

Recommended Posts

I really liked the AS format used during the holidays. I know many people think it was too hard to win with Blue. But I actually think they made it harder for Red when they went to 3 points per capture.  ANYWAY, it is clear the AS format can be balanced by adjusting the number of points awarded for a capture, by the rate the defender gets CP points, and even by the number of flags to pick up and bases to defend.

I would like to see this format adopted to selected other maps. It seems a good fit for larger maps. Kolhoz, Dusseldorf, Berlin, and Lost Temple come to mind.  Can you imagine AS on Madness? Crazy/

What do you think of this idea? Would yo like to see some maps adopted to the AS format? Should it be available only via a Pro Pass? What maps do you think might work?

Something else to consider is the upcoming Clan system and clan battles. Even if you think the AS format does not work in pick-up games ... how about in clan battles where teamwork and coordination is supposed to be stronger? It Should AS be a special clan-only format?  It is conceivable the AS format could be set to require each Clan to play one round as offense and one as defense.

Any meat on these bones?

I can't see AS mode working on any of the current maps in the game. They weren't designed for it. I guess you could just put flags and points in each base respectively but I doubt it would be balanced.

The New Year map was specially designed for the game mode, thats why it works so well. Even saying that it still took two tries and some minor adjustments to get it where it was this year.

Not optimistic about AS mode. Yes it can be done, but it's very hard to make it balanced for both teams (even after the revision, I found the Xmas map not entirely fair).

I also don't like that the roles of each team are pretty much fixed - find it more interesting when there are total momentum swings and change of offense/defense, like in CP or CTF..

I loved the 2016 map. I liked the 2017 version, but even after tweaks Red team still won most supplies-enabled battles, while Blue won most no-supply battles. Clearly not balanced enough.

I've also previously campaigned to have Assault mode/map (2016) made a permanent addition to the game.

Won't happen. It's clear to me now that the map is a Holiday-only event, much like what Tanki does on Halloween. We won't see this map year round and we won't see Assault mode applied to any existing maps.

What we *might* see is more event specific maps. Think about a Valentine's Day map, a Tanker's Day map, and a Tanki Birthday map. If you want to campaign for something, campaign for more special events.

Bringing back the 2015 Happy New Year Race map would work for one of these. Just sayin'

Personally, I liked the assault map. It was like a 2 part battle...one time you win next time you lose, or visa versa. I was in a few battles were blue won, so it's not impossible. In order for the mode to work, you need a lot of team work, which is why blue won occasionally and red lost. One random group I happened upon had a lot of good team work. We won as red twice and as blue twice. Then half left and the game went downhill from there, because the replacements were playing as individuals and against each other, not as a team.  It was the usual "Me, Me, Me Syndrome."

I can, possibly, see it working on the Berlin map. If it was adopted for Madness map, I think red would have to be on the bottom and blue up top. It would be very difficult to defend, though. You would almost have to have powerful long range weapons for defense.

If AS was adopted, I can see it working as you described as a Clan War. I've never been in a Clan, so I may be wrong on that.

As far as having meat on this bone...I think the pickings are slim at best.

^Berlin I could see. Madness not so much. Too much open area - flag carriers would constantly be nailed by Shaft and Rail fire.

Madness does trigger a thought for April Fool's day - maybe a highly confusing three dimensional map like Gravity or something involving a portal which teleports you to a random spot on the map ;). Or a version of Assault Mode where the Capture Point MOVES every few minutes.

I remember plenty of games when Blue won but maybe my experiences wren't typical. As mentoined above it takes teamwork to do well on both sides, not just 'me me me'. That's why I thught if nothing else, this format would be a natural for Clan battles. There presumably the best teams will do well.

Also I simply like the variability the AS format brings. Having a dedicated offense/defense format is a marked departure from the other formats. And again I think it'd work well in as a Clan Battle format especially well if each side had to take each role in a Clan matchup.

A definite drawback is this wold take resources from Tanki. Each map'd have to be playtested and balanced on its own.  Say Racetrack might be 4 points / cap and Dussledorf 3.  And so forth.

As for Madness let's get Crazy ... A Defense site on top and one on bottom with all the pickup points on the ramps ... of vice versa ... the devs'd have a ball trying to balance out that one. heh.

There's a lot of players out there that love a strategy challenge and Madness would be a good problem solving strategy challenge for them.

OH, OH....WAIT....WAIT!!! I'm getting a visual, here. It's forming....AAHHH, YES!! There it is.

Madness Map. Blue up top, red bottom. Big tanks defending and Wasps as flag runners. Wasps can hide very well on the ramps and a good Wasp user can out maneuver a well planned aim. With Speed enabled, only the most skilled can kill them. However, if the Wasp speeds up the ramp, pops over the top, a glancing blow can easily send him spiraling back down to floor and quite possibly through a missing tile. Frustration abounds.

Yes!! And the forums will be busy for weeks with players pros and cons (mostly cons) about how unfair red Madness is. Oh yes. I think this should be implemented tomorrow. :P

Wheeesh! That would be an absolutely grueling mode. I'd love to give it a spin, maybe on the test server.

Reminds me that I need to play Madness more. I love that map but get discouraged by the prevalence of Shaft and Rail. I'm sure Striker is a PITA there now too.

I think Skylark would make a good AS map - as is - with Red assaulting Blue.

Red Alert and Tribute too but the flag points need to be adjusted slightly as the red points on both maps are tucked away a bit too much.

New post bc slightly different subject - Iron Days are coming - could be an opportunity for a special map/mode. Maybe a no-supplies map for non-Pro players. Theme would be lots of metal and barricades (no brush or houses).

Valentines Day could have a cheesy heart shaped map with red and pink decorations. Also no supplies, but double armor is allowed (like giving your tank a hug)

I like the idea of "featured map weekends". Like NY and Halloween a single map is added to the daily missions with an infltaed reward. Then you'd have a lot of players looking to play that map. As an added twist some of those weeks could be AS mode weeks. :)
