Is there anything specific I should look for or buy when starting new?

 

Buy 2 or 3 or the cheapest M1 kits, but only MU 1 hull, 1 or 2 turrets, and 2 or 3 modules. Then save for 1 M2 kit.

It depends more on your gameplay style, but since you are playing with smoky (long shot), "Tornado" is good.

Also you will be able to play some XP games.

Tornado comes with hornet right?  Doubling down on light hulls at tyhat rank not the best idea.

 

You are better off getting kit with medium hull and short-to-medium range turret so you have flexibility for different maps.

 

It depends more on your gameplay style, but since you are playing with smoky (long shot), "Tornado" is good.

Also you will be able to play some XP games.

I have Firewall kit (bought the items separately) with both Firebird and Hunter 5/10. Some advice for expensive MUs,

• Don't buy speedups. They aren't worth the money at all.

• Start with the first few steps and wait for sales to get the next few. Early steps are a manageable price, and only buying MUs during sales will save some money in the long run.

 

Personally, I find Compact Fuel Tanks to be destructive with Firebird/Hunter

If you want to have 2 combos, Hornet would go well with Gauss and Hunter with Fire. Forget about Freeze if you want to use Fire.

I think you can do 2 MUs for your Gauss without SUs, check the wiki, one for your Fire, and maybe have enough for Hornet.

I would not recommend Boar. It is great... and then not so good. Once you reach Second Lieutenant and thereabouts the number of protections skyrockets, and very soon you're not as effective as you could be. In my humble opinion I would recommend waiting for Chiropractor. Learning to be an effective mobile sniper (not camping) is a tough load, but the payback is immense. Couple the Shaft with Light Capacitors (the alteration) and Hornet or Hunter, and with some skill you can top the leaderboard, very few drugs needed.
