Hello tankers, and welcome to 'Blast From The Past Interviews'! Here we speak to older players and helpers who have long parted from the game, in an attempt to recall a few good memories, update ourselves on how they're doing, what they're doing, and simply to get to know them if you haven't yet before.

Today we're talking to @canadarules, a well known tanker to many old forums and players. He'll be letting us into some of his real life, as well as how he discovered this game oh-so long ago.

Read on to discover more!

Hey canadarules, how’re you doing? Tell the community a bit about yourself. When did you start playing Tanki? How was your experience with it?

@canadarules

Doing good, Yisroel. I'm a 20 year old Canadian who lives in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. I like playing sports such as soccer, football, hockey, baseball and basketball with my friends. I'm also a fan of the NBA, MLB, NHL and NFL where my favourite teams are the Toronto Raptors, Toronto Blue Jays, Vancouver Canucks and the New Orleans Saints. My favourite healthy food is pasta and my favourite snack is ice cream (because I like the cold here). My favourite animal is a polar bear, because that's all I see here in Canada; polar bears running around going to all of our igloos.

I started playing Tanki a long time ago, back in 2011, but have moved on since than due to me starting school and having other things to play such as World of Tanks (Nickname: The_GreatOne, like I was on Tanki a while ago). My experience with Tanki was good as it was a fun game, but it wasn't as competitive as I'd hoped in the eSports department, due to inflexible hours. The game as a whole though was one that will always be remembered.

Polar bears are my favourite animal too. In fact, me being from Canada as well, we have three pet polar bears. We let pedestrians pet it anytime, because we Canadians are nice like that. Anyways, moving on. Who were some of your close friends in Tanki? Were they anything like you? And while we’re at that, tell the community what I mean by “like you”; what did people see you as in Tanki?

@canadarules

My close friends in Tanki were @Rick3836, , @joostcool, @GoldRock, @gfitz, @EternalOnslought, @SuperNick95, @CRRUlES, @C-O-O-L-G-U-Y, @bezdela, @Finesse (formerly LoVe_YoU-BaBy), @X.Z.F (formerly TitaniumFalcon) and @light661.

They were all great people in the community who helped me achieve what I wanted to achieve throughout Tanki. Some were a little more quiet than others throughout the community, but their voice could always be heard through me if needed. When you ask if they were all like me, what I would say is that we all got along and had a lot of fun together throughout my time here in Tanki Online. So in a lot of aspects, we were alike but we were all unique people.

What I think Yisroel is referring to when he says "like you" is how I was always around the community trying to help out where I could and loved to play the game while having fun, knowing that it was just a game.

Not exactly what I was referring to, but okay. :lol: What do you remember Tanki as? I believe you recently checked it out again to see how it was doing. Tell new players what major changes you see from back when you used to play.

@canadarules

I remember when I left Tanki it was still fun, but it wasn't like that first pretty girl you had a crush on. The game was changing to a more Premium and Daily Missions based game, which was good, but they still got rid of a few things like crystal boxes, which they never brought back.

Yes, I recently checked out the game again because I got an email saying I need to check the game again or my account is lost, so I guess that's something new. Some major changes that I saw was that the once huge player base has suddenly shrunk at a dramatic pace, and that there were some new changes to the game like private messaging in the game chat, a new way to send messages to friends when offline (gifts), no new hulls but some new turrets, some weird rectangle thing (looked like a money grab), and a whole bunch of Christmas trees from when I last quit. :lol:

The rectangle thing your talking about are modules. Not so long after you left the game, the developers split paints from their protections, and installed modules. Now you can pair any paint with any protection and play. Now paint prices are based purely on looks.

Yes, there are two new turrets; Striker and Magnum, two very powerful turrets, which have actual animated shells. Magnum can’t turn horizontally, it aims vertically, so it’s the perfect turret for noobs who never turn their turret either way. There’s also a Gold Box supply, which lets you drop Golds. Lots has changed since you’ve left.

But on to the next question, you were a pretty famous figure in the game, and particularly on the forum, and not just because “you helped players out with their questions and queries”, like you said above. I recall quite a few incidences where you could’ve been considered a professional troll. What do you have to say about those “rare” occurrences? Do you pride yourself for being a sacred troll?

@canadarules

Well, I guess that it's true; I did do a lot of trolling, and I do pride myself on doing these trolls in a fun manner where people would learn to not be so one sided. In addition to this, I kind of found it funny when people would over react to certain trolls of mine. For example, when Tanki removed custom names for battles, no one could name their battles 'XP / BP" anymore, to let people know not to use other equipment (this was going back before battle formats were implemented). People were mad about that change, and complained about it on the forum, where I used to troll them. I told them it wasn't worth it to complain, because you can just let others do it for you (everyone was mad, so a lot of people were already complaining, so why should one complain if everyone else could do it for him).

Sometimes I'd tell those people who were complaining to look back at their posts, and I'd tell them they weren't smart for wasting their time arguing, while they could've just let others argue for them instead.

Finally I'd like to thank the noob forum moderators for making it so easy for me to troll on the forum, because they didn't have anyone from the EST timezone. I was able to write whatever I wanted to at night and get away with it for hours on hand.

Glad to know you don’t regret being the biggest troll on the forum at the time. I had a couple of situations with you myself. I remember I posted a list of people I’d miss when I officially leave Tanki, and well, this is what happened. [Warning, I was and I admit to be a total cringe back then, and I regret it big time!] *Click* What are your thoughts on that?

@canadarules

Well my thoughts on that are... What do you think, looking back on it? My thoughts are mainly that I was joking around.

My thoughts are that I was a total cringe kid who failed to realize it was a joke. :lol:

@canadarules

See? You learned from it.

"I learned something from canadrules." I can imagine me going back in time and telling two-years-ago-me that, and I’d be like “What can I possibly learn from that guy?” I guess something. But anyways, getting back on track, how did you discover the game? What are some of you extremely early memories of the game?

@canadarules

I discovered the game along time ago while looking for war strategy games online and Tanki came up, so I decided to try it out. I liked to play shooter games and still do so it was a good fit for me. My early memories of the game was struggling to understand why a Shaft could one-shot me. Some of my best early memories of the game came from Fort Knox III which they changed the name of to Edinburgh.

That's where I learned to play in a fast and active way, where I put pressure on the opponent not to miss or else I would slaughter them. It was at a time where there were very few tank choices. But my favorite memory of all was that I was always able to play with Marshals (the highest rank at the time). Meaning that I would go up against the best, even when I was a Recruit, which was fun.

Ah, the times before the historical rebalance. You probably had your first M3 by Warrant Officer 1! Speaking of which, what was your first M3? And what’s your favorite map which is no longer in the game? There’s quite a handful to choose from.

@canadarules

My first M3 was most likely Twins, but I could be remembering it wrong, as I did get Firebird and Smoky M3 before the rebalance too. My favourite map that they removed is Galley. The arcs over the map were fun to play on and on top of that it was such a creative map that it took tactical skill to play on it, unlike on Sandbox.

Gallery was a spectacular map. I never had an account back then, but I remember watching my friend play on it when it was still around. Getting back into real life though, where are you currently holding? What are you doing, and what are you planning on doing in the future?

@canadarules

Currently going to college / university and am planning to go into business someday.

How do you like where you live (Canada)? Would you rather live somewhere else, at least for a short while?

@canadarules

I like where I live in Canada. I live in Etobicoke, which is in the GTA, also known as the Greater Toronto Area in Ontario. We have parks right next my house and I also have the subway near me, meaning it's easy for me to transport myself around the city. In addition to that, I like how the weather changes from season to season, because I like to have a balance of cold and warm weather so that I can have fun in the snow as well as have fun in the Sun. B) I would not like to live anywhere else for these reasons. Plus I like where I live because I can go to my igloo, where I can talk to my polar bears and penguins.

Very nice indeed. Igloos simply are such fun, I must agree. But when every house on your block is an igloo, you get used to it. Anyhow, one last question before we wrap this up. Do you have any intention on coming back to the game one day? If so, when? If no, why?

@canadarules

Nope, I have no intentions of coming back to play the game full time again, because of the fact that a lot of my Tanki buddies have since quit the game. When I used to play, I'd usually play with buddies to have more fun. We would all be on TeamSpeak, having fun and joking around. In addition to that, the clan system in Tanki still looks like it's the same... meaning it looks like a total joke. You can really see the difference in a successful eSports system, which is implemented in other games, where all time zones are treated differently and each region is split up so that it doesn't create a bias towards one timezone. Besides, I won't be coming back because I have moved on in life and I am having fun at university as well as looking forward to the next chapter in my life.

Well, glad to here you’ve moved on and are having fun in the real world. I’ll have to try that one day myself, but until I join you there, thanks for taking the time to participate in this interview. Really appreciate it! Have a good one!

@canadarules

You too Yis, see you!

That concludes this interview. Hope you enjoyed it and give us your comments down bellow on whether you did or didn't. How can we improve this series, who'd you like to see interviewed next? Do you like igloos? Tell us below.

Issue 420 then... you'll get there...

Also, @skitee? Might not be the person I'm thinking of, cant remember - basically, I'm trying to remember the famous people from when I started back in 2011.

Also, there was some well-known creative person with a name like The White Owl, or something :P

I think Tanki will die before then. :x

It could be anyone though, I wasn't here back in 2011.

It would be great to have @Sun in this interview, or if is possible? (CEO of Alternativa Platform)

I know about the inactivity r_ thing, but wasn't it Bruce Lunga? And if so, wasn't that his nickname...?

Man, I remember canadarules from my early days on the forum, I used to hate his guts. Over time I realized what he was doing, and while I never really  got to know, I think he was one of most disrespected forumers for a long time; only a select few realized he was just having fun at the expense of people younger than him.
