Add subtitles for sounds

Recommended Posts

I was thinking of adding an option in settings to turn on subtitles for magnum fire when you have sound turned off. My FPS has always been below 10 ever since that update which was supposed to stop critical errors, as such i have been playing with sound turned off and a very small screen. Prior to this whenever i knew a magnum was aiming for me i could hear it when he fired, because his ammo would take such a long time to reach me from across the map, i could quickly change positions each time he fired. Now without sound this isn't possible anymore.

btw if the develpoers are too busy with more important things like html5 or matchmaking for this i can completely understand. html5 would probably slove my lagging and i would be able to play with sound again and i certaintly wouldn't want to hinder them in making matchmaking permanent as soon as possible.

Valid

Subtitles for in-game sounds never really seemed that useful to me, but then again, I rarely ever play without sound, so I can't really judge. I know that fairly recently this kind of feature was added to minecraft and a lot of more "advanced" players use it to navigate in underground caves. Obviously Tanki is completely different, but I can see this being useful for, as you say, knowing when a Magnum fires or when an enemy drives by behind you.

How would this help? How would you know where the magnum is shooting from? If it showed you, it would just be a radar that gives an advantage.

you don't have to know where he's shooting from... you just need to know when he does so you can get away before his ammo reaches where he aimed it at.

blackwasp you know all i'm asking for is -magnum fires in the distance- at the bottom of my screen. I'm not the one who set the title"add subtitles for sounds" all i'm really asking for is just the subtitle for the sound of magnum, and not any other sounds

So whenever any magnum fires on the map, you madly scramble to move anywhere that isnt where you just were, more often than not going directly into the magnums or other enemies shot?

For the post you quote from me -> I edited it a bit.

I think the message was not clear enough.

I did not change the title either, but I actually think it is better it you get those for all turrets.

When a Smoky fires at you, you need to hear it too.

Its not about saying where, only that a magnum has fired... so you get a chance to move. So no not like a radar...normally you hear the magnum 6 months before the round arrives. You probably couldn't do it for every sound or the screen would be flooded.

There are times I need to play without sound, I need to hear the family.. maybe I should just stop playing at the time. But I take the headphones off and nothing... does make it a whole magnitude harder to play.. so thumbs up for this one.  Just pop it on the options along with the background sound setting for on/off

magnums tend to target campers because it's very hard to hit moving targets from far. and also,if they damage someone but not kill them, they won't stop landing shells until they do kill their target. just like my job is to target specific people, their job is to get campers out of hiding. when there's this annoying guy my leader gives me the order to kill him every time he leaves his base or respawns, when someone in the other side gets sick of me killing them from afar and all shaft duels against me end miserably, they get a magnum to take me out.  i don't even know why i have to explain this, have you ever even taken part in any organized battles on big maps?

Makes sense, but with your shaft mammoth combo, how do you even get out of the way?

it's more than enough time when they have to shoot all the way from across the map over tall obstacles.

More like with one hand tied behind your back.

Playing the game with no sound is like controlling the PC with no mouse...

thats what i've been having to do for more than 2 months now, sadly. this is why i really need those subtitles; my k/d and rank would be higher right now if it weren't for that stupid critical error update

If I'm listening to the news, listening for the dogs to want in, or listening for anything I deem important, I'll turn the sound way down or turn the speakers off. No one really knows where a rocket is coming from, unless you happen to be looking in that direction. I think sounds for certain, but not all, turrets would be helpful.

As @Aunty_Entity mentioned, if you did it for all sounds, the screen would be flooded. Even if it were just a notification at the bottom ot the screen, that would be flooded. So in order for this to work effectively, only one or two sounds need to be implemented.

maybe just these

-magnum fires in the distance-

-striker locking onto target-

-striker rocket(s) blasting off-(plural for salvo)

-railgun charging up-

-mine exploding-

basically ones that have slow ammo speed over long distances or delay before firing, the rest would be pointless as the sounds wouldn't be warning you in time. and the one for mines because i use them to alert me of an incomming enemy, with sound turned off they only work when i happen to be looking at the direction of my mine.

Think you really need it for Striker? It has a laser you can see.

As for Railguns, how many Railguns are there in a battle, even on just one team?

Mines....maybe. Without sound, you don't know if it's yours or the enemy's planted close to yours. If you need notification of a mine exploding, possibly the message could say, "Your mine exploded." Then there's OD to consider. If someone activated OD on a group, each one drops a mine.

Maybe like in Shooter games blue/red parts of a circle appear whenever someone hits you, depending on the position from where you have been hit. That would also invent easier seeking for enemies. :)

Good point. But I don't think TO and the Community at large are interested in handicaps. When the pause time was announced, I told them that it was unfair for the physically handicapped, which I am. I barely had enough time to go to the bathroom and back in the amount of time that was in use then. I tried very hard to make it in the new time, but failed each time. I made a post to that effect and was trolled to no end by players and Mods. I still can't make it back in time and end up logged out of the game.

I recall that, even Maf gave you a hard time, but I don't remember seeing anything about being handicapped.. makes more sense then, with that in mind.  Otherwise everyone thinks that everyone else is able bodied, there's nothing to show any difference.... not like you see a tank in crutches, wheelchair, or hearing aids or coke bottle glasses...(beer goggles don't count).
