[Issue 68] 7 Ways To Succeed With Your Helper Application

 Share

Recommended Posts

But in the end, it's inevitable that there are staff that want to become staff because of compensation in paints, pride, and purchasing power. It's quite enticing after all, if I do say so myself. Ultimately, we do see that good staff exist as well. And this is the way the system works...perhaps the inability of screening and sorting out intentions when staffers join, or just the transparency nowadays about the perks staff get.

Tanki admins are investing in communication and cooperation among themselves now more than ever before, in order to minimize the possibility of someone with problematic personality or low work ethics/activity getting into helpers. I dare to say that a lot of former helpers wouldn't even pass nowadays, exactly because we're now sorting criteria and requirements together and doing our best to encourage and accept players who are genuinely selfless and devoted to the community, even thought they already have a lot on their plate IRL. Sometimes less is more :)

I was a staff member twice (before you joined forum) and even won helper of the month paint, and believe me, the motivation back then was to get cool paints.  Then I decided to get cool paints from esports instead, and help the team genuinely through eSports advice, although now I am basically a retired player :)

I think you know exactly what I mean, the sort of proud feeling people get when writing with an avatar.  Far too much is given to helpers for what they do, such as the 20% for easy work of helping, which is same prize as Silver paint which is far harder to acquire (again I won Silver and Helper paint so I can make the comparison).

In my time in TO, I would say that I have observed about 40-50 staff members behaving in a biased manner, 30 or so in my opinion should have been sacked for it, and 10-20 were downright corrupt.  I know that  a current admin gives out IP addresses to the Drug clan community.  I know that a past admin was fired for being lazy and showing heavy favouritism.  I also know that a current moderator was feeding information to ..... and I won't mention the department of the mod.  I also know that it's more than likely that this post will be hidden.  The dirty secrets of this game are sad to see.  Far too much power and prestige is given to the Helpers, which allows such situations to arise.  People online cannot be trusted. The developers are actually the most trustworthy of the people out there.  Their aim is to make money. Helpers on the other hand are kids playing games, and they don't realise that the game ends when they leave the battle.  I also fell into this trap on many occasions, thinking skype is an extension of the game where the trickery can continue.  It's an online reality.  I've seen many online forums where the moderators are just that, they moderate the forum.  A poor game cannot afford proper wiki editors and other help assistants, and so the problem of the over reaching player-administrator is created.  If the admin is good and cares for the game as in the case of @joostcool it can be fine, but in the case of other admins who shall remain nameless, it is a disaster.

Spot on Lank. I don't usually agree with much you say, but when I do, I strongly agree.

There are many Helpers I know of that I think "How are they still a Helper?" and then the exact opposite, where you see Helpers who have been removed based simply upon personal bias or certain small trifles that have apparently deemed them "unfit" to serve as Helpers.

When you're a Helper, it seems that you can do whatever your heart desires as long as you are friends with certain people. If you're not friends with these certain individuals, you can get cut down for the slightest error. There is downright favouritism involved and justice is not upheld.

As a good friend of mine once told me, the heart of this community is based upon fear; the fear of being misunderstood, fear of annoying the wrong people, fear of getting on someone's bad side and being hunted to extinction because of it.

As for your other point about entrusting Helpers with too much, I also agree. The Tanki Developers are striving to make money so they can feed their families at home. What are Helpers working for? Do their whole livelihoods depend upon their decisions?

No, their decisions are reflected by the amount of virtual currency that they receive.

Our former CM told the Helpers that they are employees of the game.

An Employee is a person employed for wages or salary, especially at non-executive level. (Definition)

Helpers are volunteers. Not employees. Please remember that. A Helper can cut all strings connecting him/her and Tanki at any time and go away feeling none the worse. Completely different story if a Developer or a CM did the same.

Certain people in the Tanki hierarchy are trying to make this more than just a game. Other people go on about how their role in Tanki is to teach the younger players how to behave properly and that they're giving them character-building aid.

This is only a game.

Personally I am someone who has never been fearful to say what I think.  Yes it's meant I was kicked from staff for criticising one staff member heavily, but when that guy was kicked himself, Cedric came to me and said "it seems you were right", and if only I had been listened to.  I remember when I was telling everyone in the staff chat some years ago about what this person had done and why they were despicable, and what I said was laughed at, and then I was kicked from staff.  When the guy was removed for the very accusations I made it was too late for me to come back, but I felt that I had at least started the chain of consciousness that led to the guy getting kicked which in turn has led to a particular department becoming so much better.  That's my purpose in this game.  I am not staff material, as part of being staff requires being scared of the admins and not criticising too heavily.

Damn. This thing is still alive? I'm surprised there are still enough people that want to be helpers... This'll probably get deleted by some admin since this game is mad cheeks, but if you're reading this, you should know that you'll be much better off not playing tanki, or minimizing the amount of time you play, at least. Your life gets a lot easier and better once you quit video games, especially silly ones like this that are dominated by kids with their parents' credit cards. To anyone who thinks that helpers are doing something for this 'game' or 'community' (it's a business, get off your high horse), well, your opinion doesn't matter, and you should probably get a check-up to make sure your head's okay; I have genuine concern for you. The people who made this game are probably the most honest people in this business nowadays, since their objectives are pretty clear, even if they've made tanki terrible, corrupt, and no fun at all. By the way, if this comment gets deleted, or some guy who thinks he's intelligent takes five hours to write a witty one-liner, well, either I've successfully 1) Triggered you, 2) Wasted your time, or 3) Proved my point, so...

the thing i don't understand is why there are so many people who are not only wanting to be helpers but cant because of the application process (and tbh they could be very good at it) but there isn't a helper training section to train people up?

ive been a moderator and supervisor of two chat rooms and i've also helped with the social media and technical networking side of things and i didnt get a chance :'(

Can someone please tell me the difference between eSports Reporters and the [EN] Reporters section? I'm a little confused.

eSports reporters (as the name suggests) focus only (or mainly) on topics related to eSports (e.g. interviews with eSports players, reviews from tournaments, etc.) while normal reporters cover various game topics or other interesting content (guides, reviews, special update reviews, contests, etc.)

I get your point, but you can't work and have no fun, it doesn't work like that.

Maybe Tanki is more pay to win now than it used to be, but if it is so annoying to you, then stack.

I find your reply rather paradoxical, as you yourself are of Legend rank (a rank which requires lots of devotion and playing to get to) but are telling others not to waste their time.

Maybe because I've wasted hefty amounts of time here and don't want others to do the same...?

It's not a waste of time to a person who enjoys it though, and as humans, people do things they enjoy and find entertaining/stand to benefit from, so if someone is playing, in their opinion they aren't wasting time, simply relaxing so that they can take their mind off more pressing things.

As a former ~mult~ helper, I can definitely attest to this, at least at a reporter level. I failed three times at reporter, twice for forum mod, and left a wiki editor by choice, and the importance of being resolved on one is important. After focusing on writing for a while, I improved enough to join as a Reporter, and I feel if I had focused on helping others in other areas of the forum, I might have been able to become a forum mod (maybe ;)).

I can state for a fact that we can tell if you are lying or only in it for status, prestige, whatever you want to call it. For reporters, it was evident in writings and past interactions if they were in the AWC or through battles. And honestly, the compensation isn't really as great as it seems, at least while I was a reporter. You'll get some people admiring you in battle chat and others who asked how much you spent irl to get a fancy reporter paint (which, by the way, is absolutely hilarious).

If you want to be a helper for any reason other than helping (get it, it's in the name), don't even bother. Most probably will fail, and I know of others who have achieved it and then found out that the work wasn't worth the status. Props to 'ole Flexy for making it abundantly clear.
