Ever crashed into a wall? Fallen into a chasm of doom? Skidded straight into a indestructible and yet frail looking tree? If you have, you’ve come to the to the best place to probably not learn to maybe avoid death by driving. Yes, buckle up and pray start those engines, for you are now entering twee’s driving school!

Choose a hull to suit your playing style

As humans, which I assume you lot are, each of us has a preferred playing style; such as being a defender, a midfielder, and so on. As such, selecting a turret and hull that complements that style is pretty much a no-brainer. Here’s a rough, and by no means a concrete, guide on what goes where.

Attacker: Wasp, Hornet, Hunter

Midfielder: Hornet, Hunter, Viking, Dictator

Defender: Viking, Dictator, Titan, Mammoth

So, once you’ve chosen your combo, proceed forth into the sunlight, open your handy guidebook, and thumb your way to...

Lesson 1: Know Your Hull

Every hull in the game is sized differently, acts differently, and drives differently. Therefore, once you’ve picked your preferred one, spend some time getting to know its ins and outs. Drive it around corners and obstacles of all types, jump it, max out its speed, see how it reacts to impact from weapons, and so on.

Now that you know how your hull behaves, you can proceed onto mastering some skills.

Lesson 2: Trim The Apex

Now, whenever you turn into a corner, you’ll want to get out of it as fast and as cleanly as possible. The best way to do this is to trim the inside apex of it, or in simpler terms, to get as close as possible to the boundary of the corner in the direction that you’re turning.

To master this, you’ll need to know at exactly which point to start and stop turning, so always keep an eye on the bottom edge of the corner, as shown below.

f7uTH1s.png

As long as you make sure that you don’t catch the edge of your hull on that edge, you’ll be able to screech your way through the corner without any loss of speed or time.

Lesson 3: Reversing

The art of driving backwards, as demonstrated by Cars 2, is not to be sniffed at. It’ll help you out of tight corners (often literally), and can be used in practically every mode of the game. So what’s it all about?

- First off, get to know how your tank behaves when it’s going backwards.

Depending on your settings, the controls will invert themselves or stay the same when you start reversing, so check those out if you’re not sure.

oZAHXR5.png

- Get used to reversing with your turret turned all the way around.

This is where the control inversion will probably come in handy, since when you’ve swung it around completely you can proceed to drive backwards the same way as you would normally. Of course, if you don’t want to invert it, you’ll just have to familiarize yourself with the change.

- Make sure you know your surroundings.

This is invaluable, since if you don’t have your turret turned all the way around, you have no way of knowing what lies behind you, and if you’re shooting an enemy in front of you, turning your turret while retreating is not an option. This way, you’ll be able to reverse back to your teammates, and face off the enemy team majestically.

Lesson 4: Jumps

Be it charging up and over a ramp, falling off a wall, or driving right off a cliff, there are many ways to jump in TO. There are a couple of advantages to jumping, such as getting away from a marauding enemy and cutting some distance off a route to get somewhere faster. Whatever the reason, you’ll probably find yourself needing to jump at some point of time, and when you do it, you’ll want to do it properly, so listen up.

When jumping, make sure that your hull is at the correct angle at the moment that you entrust your fate to gravity, and that you know exactly where you will land. Try as much as possible to position yourself so that you hit the ground square-on, as you’ll be able to accelerate away the moment you hit the ground, and also minimize the risk of performing an embarrassing roll that ends with you upside down with the enemy team lining up to take pot shots at you.

Also, if you mess up the jump and you happen to have a turret with recoil handy, you can use the recoil to right yourself mid-jump. Simply point your turret in the direction that you’re tipping toward, and fire. For example, if you’re pitching towards the left, fire at the left, thereby using the recoil to push yourself to the right mid-jump.

Lesson 5: Attacking

At some point of time, you will find yourself needing to push into the enemies territory, or drive them out of yours - or you might simply want to go on a murderous, supply-fueled rampage. When you do want to do this, you can use a few driving tactics to survive longer and bag yourself a few more kills.

- Peek-a-boo

If the route you take has conveniently placed props that provide cover on it, use them to your advantage. Hide behind them and cover in fear rock back and forth in and out of cover while firing. This makes sure that you get protection from incoming fire, and you'll also be able to land a few shots on the enemy team while you're at it. This is a particularly good technique if you're entering heavily protected enemy bases.

- Head on

The most popular method of attacking, this involves charging headlong into the enemy base, usually with all supplies enabled. Not much scope for improvement, but there are a couple of ways to make it more effective, especially if you're playing a team battle.

  • Timing; If what you want is nothing more than to shock and awe, you can time it to your teams advantage. As there are usually more than two routes into enemy territory, distract your opponents from one side, and allow other players to sneak into their base while everyone focuses on killing you.

  • I need healing; If you have an obliging Isida on your side, persuade them to follow you while you push into enemy territory and heal you. You'll both last longer this way, and thus kill ALL OF THE TANKS. It's always nice to leave some kills to your Isida, and to protect them as well, mind.

Lesson 6: Defensive Driving

You’ve got the flag. You have one objective, getting it to your base. But for some strange reason, the enemy team doesn’t feel inclined to let you do so. They give chase, and obviously having more skill MU’s than you because they’re spending their crystals well noob mult buyers, they immediately catch you, kill you, and return the flag; the point at which you rage quit and report them for hacking.

To avoid such a situation, you can employ a few tactics to bamboozle your opponents. Let’s get to the obvious ones first.

- Avoid open areas.

Depending on the map, there’ll almost always be a temptingly clear, straight route to where you want to go. Yeah, don’t take that. You’ll be used for target practice by Shafts, Railguns, and other nasties from the other team. Instead, use the props on your map for cover. Drive through lines of bushes, dart from rock to rock, and basically pretend that you’re Dracula on a sunny day.

For example, these are some suggested routes on Serpuhov.

zbuQC0Y.jpg

- Throw off their aim

Although your new, camo-ed route may offer better cover, that doesn’t mean that you’ll be completely free from the threat of death by explosion. In that case, you’ll need to counter your opponents uncanny ability to plant shells in your rear. To do so, zig-zag when possible, and if you know that there’s a shot heading your way, change direction and speed. A good way to do so is by sudden braking or reversing.

If you’re following your team’s flag carrier

- Provide cover

When you’re both doing a runner back to your base, it should be your top priority to keep the flag bearer safe. As such, making yourself into a shield is one of the best ways to cement your reputation of being an exemplary team player. When you and the flag bearer come to exposed areas or come under fire from the opposing team, position yourself so that you take the brunt of the impact from their shots, providing the flag bearer with some additional armour and time to get the flag away safely. You may die yourself, but by doing so you make sure that the objective of the game is completed, and may even ensure victory.

- Neutralize any threats

If you’re still in enemy territory, chances are that you’ll be confronted by lots of angry tankers wanting their flag back. Since the flag bearer is going to be busy trying to not die, it’ll be your job to take care of anything that may impede their progress. So, if there’s a mine in the middle of the only path out and you’re being pursued, take the hit and give the flag bearer a clean passage through. If there are any enemies in the way, ram them clear of the path of the player with the flag, and throw off their aim as much as possible. Again, you may be destroyed, but you will be ensuring another captured flag for your team.

Lesson 7: Just For Fun

Just because you’re playing with a bunch of bloodthirsty maniacs with tanks and good internet connections, doesn’t mean that you can’t show off and have a bit of fun while you drive. Learn to drift around corners, pull off a few pirouettes, and for maximum points...

Well, that’s pretty much everything you’ll need to drive like a pro out there. Feel free to tell me whether I forgot anything in the comments, practice these moves, make up some of your own, and above all, drive hard!

And don't be on your cell phone...    ... that's illegal in some states.

and you best not be drinking (or consuming any food or other non alcoholic drink either, crumbs get stuck in your keyboard) either, it may impede your ability to drive, and also is illegal in some states.

Unneccessary text walls, twee. Simple:

Step 1) Get into a battle

Step 2) Spam AWSD

Step 3) DO NOT, REPEAT DO NO, TOUCH THE Z/X OR , OR . KEYS, THEY WILL DESTROY THE EARTH!

Good thinking though. I have seen many players who does not know how to drive their tank regardless of the hull in use. I find it annoying when gold hunters are in my way because they can't drive properly.

Fustly, Great guide :)

Id add as follows. All this elementary stuff has to be mastered, preferably early on. That being said, all this goes out the window in the crush. Comrades jostling about trying to get a clear line of fire, to avoid fire, to manouvre, to take the most efficient path. Incoming fire with its impact force, the effect of recoil. Much of the game seems to be a wrestling match aimed at putting a tanker in the best position to fire, avoid fire and get from one place to another quickly and efficiently. 60% of the problem is our own team. This situation suggests two areas of development:

Playing well with others

Imagine driving in a city where there is no orderly, agreed way of doing it, no rules of the road. Each person operates individually, and constantly tries to get to the destination first. Not very workable, that is Tanki. Id suggest the following guidlines to correct this:

1) Let faster tanks through. A Viking should give way to a Wasp or Hornet on the attack, for example. Let them use

     their superior speed

2) The guy closer to the ramp or corner, takes the ramp or corner first

3) Be mindful of comrades behind while fighting. Try not to get in peoples line of fire. It is better to have supporting fire than become

     a  human shield

4) Give teammates room to manouvre when fighting

5) Dont use superior power to push comrades of lower weight out the way, be courteous and efficient

6) Quite obviously, let the flag carrier through

The Force game

Id suggest as follows:

Be mindful of Weight, Power, Impact Force and Recoil, and consider the effects of these when picking Turrets and Tanks. This is a little regarded but effectively huge aspect of gameplay, and has been neglected in the writing so far.

Obviously, be one of those irritating geezers that fires to knock an enemies aim off while fighting. Position tanks head on or against walls to prevent aim being knocked off,

Pay attention to the timing of an opponents shots, so as to be able to efficiently reposition and return fire.

With the correct application of force, there is great opportunity for team play. Reaching an agreement with comrades to shoot at enemies front left corner, for example, or to drive into the same part of an enemy, will have the guy spinning around wondering what happened under the effect of multiple attacking forces, no matter how much weight is carried

First time i Knew about this i was so happy (damn bro i'm going pro on this game now no more self), but you can just try to go from that place without shooting, all you need is a screenshot of a tank about to fall! Well Nice one ^^

I assumed that everyone would know the basic controls and how to use them. The point of this article was not to call anyone a noob, or to mock them, but to introduce them to some driving techniques that are somewhat out of the ordinary.

It is possible, too, with a non-recoil turret, to "jump" and land on your tracks. Too bad you didn't explain that one, Twee.

Might I also add, that your writing seemed a wee bit lackluster in this? Need it be proof read, sir? I'm sure I'd might be able to allocate to you a few ideas in which this piece may be redeemed.

I did as a matter of fact explain how to land properly without a non-recoil turret. I spent a whole paragraph on explaining it. I just didn't that that it would need to be made clear that the explanation was for turrets without recoil.

As for my writing...it is my first guide, so I couldn't use my literary skills to their maximum.

Ah, I missed that bit then. I do apologize sir. However, I could tell from; "a indestructible," that there were bound to be a few nit picky errors. Either way, it still was a good gander for the eye, a joyful read.
