You can barely put out an event every few months, what makes you think you can do one every week?

BOII -_-

I'm coming up with the ideas, that's how :p

Perhaps things have changed while you were gone. We've addressed a few problems, got our butts in gear, and most of all the members of the AWC are playing an active role in the running of this, as you might have noticed from the comments section of this post.

You could participate in it yourself, and see how it goes, eh?

My article exceeds the given max length, is 350 acceptable?

It would be nice if you could cut it down a bit, but we can make allowances at our discretion.

You are going to contact us via PM ASAP if something's wrong, I am sure? We don't want people to not win simply for a small error such as this :P.

Just wanted to say that people writing for a reward feels absurd.

I don't intend to insult or look down upon anybody but it seems as if most people who post in AWS do so with an ulterior motive to get into the reporters group at some point. That's still alright but encouraging people to write for a reward doesnt seem to be the best way to do it.

I remember writers posting brilliant stories a while ago but now most people no longer write for the sheer pleasure of writing.

Anyways, I hope this project is a success and we get high quality stuff out of it.

Good luck!

Honestly, there are dozens and dozens of writing competitions even in real life and pretty much every contest or competition is somehow based around idea of rewarding and trying to be the best - some offer money and others just offer some title or some honorable mention or acknowledgment (btw this doesn't apply only to writing). On top of that, these contests aren't just about winning prizes, they also help with development of one's writing while facing competition of other writers and challenges that come with it.

Besides, I feel you generalize a bit. I agree with you there probably are people who don't really like writing that much and just strive to get some sort of attention out of it, but then again, you can often clearly see who they are based on the quality, energy and time they put into their works. Also, there still are many writers who post their work just for fun and because they like to write something here and there, they even sometimes declared they have no intention of joining reporter team.

lol, any reason is good to have people use or improve their writing skills.

Actually these contest are good, because they provide small challenges that force your brain to work in different way opening new possibilities and skills which in the end will benefit you if you want to write a bigger and better story.

This do not undermine the pleasure of writing, if you had it already.

By within 100 and 200 words, does it mean that my paragraph can contain 200 words? Not sure if

100<word count<200

or

99<word count<201?

The word limits are lax. You can do up till 250 words, and it will be accepted unless it is full of content that could have been removed to make it shorter. A bit above 200 is fine, but do you best to shorten it.

Removed some adjectives to make the paragraph under 200 words :/

This. Participating in a writing competition IRL. Prize is trash (100 bucks for grand prize. Not much), odds are slim (Nation-wide, for every high school student), and there's no fame to be associated with it. Why am I partaking in it then?

As a learning experience, and for the fun of it. With contests, you see who's good, how they became good, and what makes them good. You get to see how different people write, you see new techniques. The prize is on the side, a little extra for the best. What I'm doing that competition for, and I can post the link to it if you want, though it's for Canadians only, is to get something new out of it and become better that way. To say everyone is greedy and wants the moolah only isn't just generalization, it's borderline rude to those who want nothing to do with that.

Anyways, nothing is wrong with incentives as long as the incentivised person yields excellent quality work! Greed isn't bad, it fuels the whole of modern economy (barring states like N. Korea ofc).

The word count is basically "long enough to have content" - "not so long as to be waffle". We decided on 100-200 words because we didn't want people to be seriously struggling to finish within the time given.

Basically, less than 100 words is probably too short to say much, more than 250 is starting to be too long...
