For the ones that are unfamiliar with the celebration, could you perhaps elaborate on what it is, how it's celebrated etc?

okay i can't be bothered to remember the dates and time stuff happens in history, i only remember what happened so...

long long ago in england, during the time right after king james VI of scotland became king jame I of england and became the first king of the shared crowns of england and scotland. england was still divided between protestant and catholic, after he took over there were catholics fearing he might make everyone in england protestant. One of them was Robert Catesby, he gathered 12 other people and planned to assassinate the king, kidnap his daughter and convert her to catholicsm so that the shared crowns would become catholic. among the 12 other people one of them was Guy Fawkes. He had formely been in the spanish army for 10 yearswhere he called himself Guido Fawkes.

They planned to fill the tunnels below the parliment with enough gunpowder to blast the parliment to crumbles... but a few nights before the king received an anonymous letter about someone planning to kill him. Robert Catesby heard about it and suspected it was sent by one of the 12 men, but he convinced him otherwise, robert then decided to go on with the plan.

On the night of 5th november, the royal guards found Guy Fawkes right beneath the parliment with enough gunpower to destroy the parliment and kill everyone in it. He got captured, and when asked by king james why he was doing that, he replied,"to blow you scotch beggars back to your native mountains!"They started to torture him until he revealed where the other members of the gunpowder treason and plot were. He managed to remain defiant until 2 days later when he began to confess bit by bit. On 9th november he finally revealed the names of his co conspirators and where they were hidden. he wrote out his confessions and singed them with "GuidoFawkes"

meanwhile robert catesby and the rest of them were hidden somewhere far away, unknowing of the fact that guy fawkes had confessed. over 200 guards came and when they asked to get in robert decided to ake a last stand. He was the last to get shot down, and when he got shot down he managed to crawl to the back of the house where he found a painting of virgin mary, and he was found dead hugging that painting and his cross. those who did not die in the shootout were captured

in the end he got charged guilty of high treason and got sentenced to  be drawn backwards to his death by a horse, They were to be "put to death have his genitals would be cut off and burnt before their eyes, and their bowels and hearts removed then be be decapitated, and the dismembered parts of his body be displayed. on the day itself him and 3 of the others who got later captured started to get excuted. he was the last in line and his after his friends were finished it was his turn. when he was climbing up towards the noose he managed to jump off and break his neck in one last act of defiance against the protestant crown. (or maybe he just fell)

since the, the official protestant way of celebrating was to burn a scarecrow who wore a mask of his face in a bonfire on the 5th of november. but, catholic rebels commemorate the uprising of the catholics it by parading around wearing his mask. of course, this was illegal back then and anyone caught could be put to death.

today, it has shifted to representing rebellion or uprising aganst your system of control.

by the way me and my friend nearly got arrested by the military police just now,

Pretty sure Guy fawkes isn't a symbol of rebellion, it's just a holiday where people can shoot fireworks and crap.

Pretty sure you didn't read v for vendetta.

well officially he isnt. obviously the english didnt record history the way the rebels wanted them to. he was a symbol of rebellion among the rebels who obviously didnt get to record it officially.

for example, most of the western world sees fidel as a villian, but for his people he is a hero, a champion of the oppressed, someone who rose against an unjust ruling power.

thing is, tge english were the ones who recorded histoy and they recorded it how they waned to, and obviously they didnt portray guy fawkes in a heroic light. they just made the symbol of the rebels seem like someone insignificant.

dont just watch the fireworks and celebrate, join those fighting the police and you'll see what i mean. they yell his name, anti monarchists shout "to blow you scotch beggars back to your native mountains!"but for you people who only listen to the system cause you like to be controled, you just believe them when they say these are just a bunch of lunatics screaming nonsence.
