Sorry or the ambiguous title, I couldn't really think of anything better. Basically, for a while I've been curious about what people normally do when they are done working with their PC. Do you shut it down, put it into sleep mode, or something else?

Personally, I almost always put it into "sleep" mode, and only sometimes I shut it down or reboot. I'm pretty sure it's not good for the PC, but that's what I'm used to. I almost always have unfinished work at the end of the day, and I can't be bothered to open up all the programs like skype, greenshot and discord every time I start the PC, so putting it in sleep is easier. But I do find that sometimes if I didn't shut it down for a while, its performance seems to worsen and various glitches and errors come up. That's when I know I need to shut down or restart.

What about you?

My mom gets angry on me if she see any electric appliances turned on and no one using it.

My parents never told me about sleep mode lol. They just taught turning off & on.

Electricity isn't cheap that's why we save it as much as possible.

I never put the computer is sleep mode. Even if I am taking break of 20-30 minutes, I shut it down.

BTW If I am uploading/installing something then I leave it open.

For Skype & Discord, isn't there an option to open automatically when computer starts?

There is that option but they take wayyyyyyy longer

I always had the habit of using my computer, then turning it off when I finish. If I need to go somewhere for like 20 mins, then I would put it to sleep cos it will take like 20 mins to turn it off and turn it back on again xD (a bit exaggerated but you get the point). Is it really thaaaat bad to do exactly as maf does? :?

That takes a while and increases start-up time.

My mom used to say that sleep mode will burn down the house. So we had to turn off the TV and PC entirely after every session.

Nowadays I usually leave my PC on the entire day and shut it down when I'm going to bed.

Anyway, my two HDD's won't get any additional wear because they shut down after a minute or two when I don't acces files from them.

I have an SSD in my PC which makes it boot up really quick, yet I am leaving the thing on all the time.

Might be good or bad for the electronics; I have no idea, you tell me.. lol.

I'm a little more sporadic. It depends on what I'm doing and how long I'll be on. If I'm working on a long term project that requires a lot of web surfing and I know I'll be on for several hours, I'll create a file for it and reboot once during the day and again in the evening, just to keep the signal fresh.

If I'm working short term or just messing around, not doing anything important, like playing games, I'll let it go into sleep mode by itself but turn it off at supper time. If I want to use the computer in the evening, I know I'll have a fresh signal.

When I got my first computer in 2002, I was pretty much in the dark about computers. I didn't know what dot com, dot gov or dot anything meant. A web was something a spider spun and a browser was someone walking through the store looking but not buying. I bought a book titled Computers for Dummies and started reading. It mentioned that a computer should be shut down at least 4 times a day, because over a short period of time, the signal begins to deteriorate rather quickly. The computer needed to be shut down to refresh the signal. I did that religiously for years. Since then computers have become more sophisticated and reliable, so they don't need to be shut down that often any more. It was a hard habit to break.

A couple years ago, I read if you leave your computer on for long periods of time without using it, you're leaving the computer open for hackers, keyloggers, viruses sent out in bulk, and a few other nasty Trojans. True? Not true? I don't know. I have a good antivirus and anti-everything-else, so I shouldn't be too concerned. But I shut it down anyway if I won't be using it for an hour or more.

I keep my laptop on sleep mode if i am not using it.
And restart or reboot my laptop once a week.
But if i am out of the house for a long time, i usually shut it down.

The rock I'm currently using as a computer requires about 2-3 wall smashes to put it into sleep mode. It is a lot of effort but it is better than leaving it on; I once woke up to see my room completely wrecked, with the faint outline of " I will rock your room" scraped onto my wall, so I take no chances.

What does your rock do?

I use a monitor connected to a laptop, so I off the monitor and leave the laptop on, except at the end of the when I shut it down so that it can get back to full charge for another day's use.

Someone told me that its better to put it in sleep mode, switching it on and off 'grinds its gears' or something and since it requires some effort to boot up, its best to shut it down the least you can. Just a theory, but one which i follow nonetheless

Summary:

I use sleep during intervals of work during the day, and usually hibernate at night to retain my workspace.

Full:

The multiple desktop feature of Windows 10 is very useful to me because I can create a separate workspace with what I am writing in a window and my references opened in another window. Reopening all that after a shutdown wouldn't fit well with my lazy tendencies, so I use hibernate.

When I'm done doing what I was doing, I shut it down. Sometimes, if I'm interrupted, I'll forget it's on and it'll go to sleep. The next day, when I go to turn it on and see I forgot to turn it off, I cringe a little. I begin to wonder what type of Trojan snuck in on me. I have a free version of an antivirus and it's not all that great. It's let a couple Trojans in. One was a search engine that took over all my browsers and the other was a worm that ate my mail and saved files. The search engine couldn't be uninstalled, but could be turned off in the Task Manager. The worm was very expensive to get rid of.

Expensive anti-virus are worth their prices.

I turn it on in the morning. It automatically goes to sleep if I leave it unattended for more than 10 minutes. I turn it off before I go to sleep.

So my computer does 14+ hour days every day.

Wow, technology abuse. Computers deserve their own rights to rest and enjoy life.

(Says the guy who torments his PC for 25 hours a day)
