Ability to chose targets

I feel that there should be an option to set a primary target near the general area of the center of your screen if you don’t want to shoot the closest enemy.

The target would be marked with some kind of crosshair or marker above them while they are in your line of sight, and selecting another target or looking away from them would clear the current target.

Holding the “mark target” key would also clear the target, letting you just shoot the closest target in your aiming triangle.

This could be used for any cannon with a decent amount of range, making sure that they hit their intended target and not a tank trying to distract you by rushing you.

This barely happens when using anything except when Railgun occasionally auto-aims and shoots over your preferred target at someone else.

I mean, one eSport tactic is to use this "auto-aim" to your advantage by taking a hit for your team's flag bearer.

Why not just aim?

Why not just aim?

Because this is about auto-aim. When you have multiple enemies in one vertical line in front of you, it's impossible to choose which one you will shoot, because the auto-aim will decide for you. I'm pretty sure that when there's a choice between an enemy and another enemy with your flag, the auto-aim will prioritise for the one with the flag, but if you want to choose between an enemy with low health or high health, or an enemy with no module and one with a high protection module, you can't do that easily.

Hmm...Would really be nice with Striker if there was an ability to override the A.I. trying to auto-lock onto another enemy in your line of fire.   But I do think the gameplay is fine now and part of the strategy is hiding behind other tanks while running away.  And how fast, realistically, could you do this when a flag-runner is disappearing around the corner?

Vulcan has the same problem with auto-aim. Many times I try to shoot the enemy flag bearer and shoot the player in following him. In Brest, if the enemy flag bearer is going up the ramp into his base and there is one of his teammates at the bottom of the ramp. auto-aim will aim for the one at the bottom of the ramp.

One vertical line? I am not sure I understand.

If a tank is using its hull to screen a flag carriy this is called a good tactic. If the screening is not coplete I can target an exposes corner of the flag carrier and hit it.

Is this a railgun thing? I have not used railgun since my early 'try every item' days in the game.

Well, the autoaim in Tanki Online works along a vertical line. So you have to make sure that your turret is pointing at the player in the horizontal plane, but then it's the job of the autoaim to adjust the shot's trajectory vertically so that it hits the enemy that's above, below or directly in front of you. Now, let's say you have three enemies before you: one straight ahead, one slightly above and one slightly below. They are all along the same vertical line, but at different heights, and all within the reach of your autoaim. If you were to shoot, the autoaim would randomly choose one of the targets (or maybe not randomly, not sure yet), and you have no way of choosing who you want to shoot.

This idea is about adding a target selection crosshair that allows you to switch between targets if you have more than one to choose from.

Here's a small test I did:

In this example, the autoaim appeared to be randomly choosing between the two targets. So if one of them were to have no Smoky protection, but the other had 50%, it could be problematic to target the one without protection.

Thanks for the clarification Maf. I thought that was what you meant but I was not sure.

I honestly cannot recall a time this affected me. Or perhaps if it did, like your example here, maybe I just compensated by rocking my hull. Or maybe by moving to the side a bit for a clearer shot?  ??? I have no memory of this coming up where I was frustrated by not being able to hit the tank I meant to hit. Maybe it affects turrets I do not use more than the ones I do use?

Dev time needs to be prioritized on both the scope of the problem and the frequency it happens. This does not seem to be too severe on both counts.

Besides, by the time a player could set the crosshair the tanks will quite likely no longer be in that exact arrangement.  It is not a bad idea per se but it seems like there are more pressing needs than this.

Yeah, same here. This issue is very easy to solve without the need for some extra controls. I don't think the idea is necessary.

Yes, plus, how do you build an interface for this? There is no code to select a tank on screen now. Well I doubt we need worry about it. I doubt anything will come of the proposal.
