Topic merge mania

Recommended Posts

Have you had trouble with getting your topic merged?  You know, merged into some topic that is weeks and weeks old that virtually sees no light of day.

What are some of your experiences with super tight topic control?

i have had this happen many times.  I want to get opinions about a specific topic and some over zealous moderator relegates the entire topic/thread to a section of the forum where very few people read.  It is irritating and makes me want to not even bother writing.  Merging topic like this is basically censorship at best and the trash can at worst.

I know the mods have lots of work to do and kudos for them usually being pleasant about their jobs, but I think they take it too far sometimes.  I feel they should let some of these remotely related topics play out a bit...see if posters are interested.  If not, and there are few replys, THEN move the topic to a different location, but see if they have a life first.  I doubt the mods get commission on anything so why not let the forum run free a little bit instead of such rigidity?

Oh, specifically, I just wrote a tounge in cheek topic that there needs to be a bounty on Magnums as a Public Service.  Yes it was about Magnum, yes I did suggest a nerf, but I really wanted to hear what others had to say about this growing problem in the game...and not from the same posters that post on the Magnum thread.  I asked for the topic not t be moved to "Let's Discuss Magnum" so the moderator merged it with an even more obscure topic "Magnum needs to be nerfed"  which the only way I can even find it is to track my own merged post.

My topic and post basically got tossed out, never to be read or commented on by anyone on the forum except the moderator that moved it and maybe the next poster that gets tossed into the same dead end.

Believe it or not developers actually see the topics if they are in the correct place. So making a topic about why Magnum should be nerfed is next to useless when the only people who can nerf magnum won't see it, they don't have time to roam around the forum looking at stray topics which is why we merge them.

Not to mention that it would clutter the forum massively if every topic was left. They would also die within a few days too.

Your topic had a lot of text, but very little of it was actually useful. From what I managed to pick up, the only part that mattered in it was when you said

there really is a problem with Magnums.  They are too overpowered or their splash radius it too wide, or their recovery time is too short

So all you really did was post a generic complain about Magnum being overpowered - something developers have heard dozens of times already (don't ask me why they haven't nerfed it yet - baffles me too). And a generic comment like that doesn't deserve its own topic, when we already have three bigger suitable topics for it.

You say you wanted to see people's feedback about magnum, but the reality is that you would get the same comments as those, which have been posted in the other topics, and repeating the same stuff over and over is pointless.

I understand that you feel like the topic gets "killed" when it's merged into another one, but unfortunately that's because this forum isn't as active compared to some others. That doesn't change the fact that it needs to be kept neat and organised, i.e. topics discussing the same thing should be merged into one.

which the only way I can even find it is to track my own merged post.

Did you not get a notification saying "Ninja quoted a post you made"?

Actually, that specific thread in the Ideas and Suggestions forum is a pretty popular topic as far as ideas go.

This is an essential problem with forums.  Their stream of consciousness progresses in a linear format and people do not often read all the way back.  Every single forum has this problem- the mods are just doing their job.

Mafioso already explained it, but your topic did not quite bring anything new to the discussion, besides a little bit of humour.  Players are already discussing strategies to counter Magnum, what effect it has on the game and maps, and how to nerf it.

Of course I cannot speak objectively here, but most times my topics were merged into places where they actually resurrected old threads.  It wasn't an issue.

Now, I wonder, if you don't like the fact that many posts are simply forgotten, there should be a way to sort posts in a topic, in descending order, by number of likes.  In this way people can glance at the most important points of the discussion.

I think it gets annoying when you're trying to start a discussion on something very specific and the mods try to fit your topic into something way to general like for example the over-active developers section. I don't know how the developers read their topics but I think there needs to be more than one CM on the scene if all comments; including all the stupidity, can be studied thoroughly.

But the system is better as it was a few years back. I remember that topics were sometimes closed too early; no discussion possible. No forum moderator ever considered moving a topic. Nowadays Staff get involved into discussions aswell which is a good thing.

this guy needs more merging. He always creates topics to complain about stupid things like druging, server disconnecting when he has a lot of kills, etc. when there's the complain book for him. please merge this into the complain book.

This is an interesting point and I had not considered it before...thank you for an insight.

This would be a really great way to see relevant posts on a topic...I'd love to see you put this into the suggestion section.  I have no idea if it is possible technically, but it would help a lot to be able to cull many of the less pertinent posts...at least less pertinent based on readers likes (or lack of likes in this case)

That is where we come in.

It would be great to have an option like that, or for example a search option that shows all the posts made by a certain player in a specific topic, but unfortunately, that's not possible here.
