Magnum: Distance-Armed Projectile

Recommended Posts

Magnum can be lobbed over short walls like a grenade. This is ridiculous; that is not how artillery really works.

My suggestion is that Magnum should have a:

Bigger splash radius. Maybe only slightly, but it is ineffective at long distances currently compared to Shaft or Railgun.

Faster launch speed. Like real artillery almost. The current 40% power should be the new minimum.

Arming projectile. The projectile does not detonate until/unless it has traveled quite a ways. (50 meters?) If launched closer, it does damage at a direct hit, but has no splash.

It would then function as a tank destroyer at close ranges, similar to WW2 variants such as the StuG, which had no turret. Since it has no auto aim and no self-damaging splash, it would be interesting but not OP.

And at long ranges, it would work as before, with splash. This would be a balanced change, similar to the Thunder AP Ammo Alteration, because it removes nearly all chance of self-damage.

Valid

Sounds complicated. I feel like this would cause a lot of confusion from new players, as they would shoot enemy tanks and not deal damage half of the time.

It would deal damage at close ranges, just no splash.

Alternatively, the amount of splash could vary with distance traveled. This would still promote realistic use of artillery without the OP lob-bomb-over-wall close-range stuff.

That would make it even more OP; no self-damage?

^It couldn't toss bombs over short walls. And it would only do damage if you got it to hit directly, and since there is no autoaim, this would be hard except at very close ranges where other close-range turrets would fare better.

What if the shot travels 25m upward and 25m downward?

Bigger Splash radius?  Heck no!  it already does a lot of damage when it misses the target.  Increasing that radius will make it more OP.

This idea does nothing to mitigate magnums ridiculous advantage - that it can kill/damage targets on other side of map while remaining 100% safe it it's own base behind minefields and walls.

The StuG is still a LOS weapon - the barrel can't elevate high enough to lob shots properly.

Magnum is more like the M12 Gun Motor Carriage.  Make it dig in the spade (2-3 seconds) before it can begin to fire. Then make it lift up the spade (2-3 seconds) before it can move again.

At long ranges, it would work as it does now. At short ranges, it would not explode. There would be no auto aim, so it would be hard to aim except at very short ranges.

The projectile should be going faster.

They have it IRL... it's not that complicated. The bullet just needs to go a certain distance to explode. Safety/proximity fuses function like this since the beginning in WW2.
