Three months back we revived our traditional writing competition and found the entry that will serve as opening chapter of a whole new story. After another month, we also know how second chapter unwrapped the story. It's time to continue further!

The first chapter was written by @Electron-9000 and second by @GrandExecutioner. Your job is to continue where these two authors left. Take a look at the story so far and write your own continuation.

Chapter 1

The Chronicles of a Writer

Chapter 1: The Reveal

‘Meet me at my office at 2’ read the note. All kinds of emotions rushed through. “What does he want now?”, visibly confused, Gerald quickly glanced at the clock. “Half-an-hour left eh”. He reached out for his coffee mug. It was empty.  He moved towards the coffee machine to fill him up with some coffee. “Yo Stephanie, do you know what the boss wants to talk about today? Did he speak to you about anything?”. Stephanie just nodded a no and continued to converse on her phone.

This whole meeting thing was stressing Gerald out. He had never been called for a meeting before. Was he getting suspended? Even worse, fired? Gerald worked as a writer for a firm. He had been appointed to his role by his uncle, Oswald. He had done a few reports and that’s it. What the company did, or what their market was, was something Gerald has no clue about. Nevertheless, he waited for the hour to strike.

He knocked the boss’s cabin, asking permission to enter. The boss had his chair turned towards the fireplace, smoking a cigar, with his back towards Gerald. “Grab a chair young man”. His voice was cold. Gerald, not wanting to make things worse for himself, quietly pulled a chair and sat down. Every second passing seemed like an hour. At this point Gerald had begun to sweat.

The boss, back still turned against him, spoke: “Do you know why I called you here Gerald?” “Not really Sir!” Gerald replied. The boss turned around. He had large sunglasses on, which covered most of his face. A muffler was wrapped around his neck. He said, “Mr. Gerald, I know its been just 4 months that you have been working with us, I think now it’s time that I tell you what this company is all about” Gerald sat right up. Something wasn’t right. He could feel it. The boss let him have a few moments to sink it in.

Once Gerald regained his composure, the boss continued. He said, “We are a company that does ads for different clients, but we work as spies undercover for these clients. Blackmail, evidence collection, reports, etc. is all part of what we do here. And before you react or try to leave, let me tell you that once you are hired here, there is no turning back”. Gerald was shocked. Struggling to find some words to blurt out, he asked, “What.. What mm-makes you think I c-can’t run away?”. The boss smirked, and pulled out a paper which looked like the contract Gerald had once signed on. He continued, “Your uncle works for us as a talent recruitment officer. I must tell you, he does his job well, I mean look at you. Perfect talent”.

Gerald gulped. Memories were starting to strike back at him. Nearly 6 months ago, he had asked his uncle Oswald for a job. His uncle introduced him to this job. Even though the pay wasn’t all that good, Gerald had to take it because of his poor condition. After all, something is better than nothing right? He also remembered that in his state of desperation, he had forgotten to read the contract and just did whatever he was told at that time.

Back to the present, Gerald was furious. He had been played. But there was no other option at this point. With a heavy heart, Gerald asked the boss, “What do you want me to do?”. The boss laughed, and replied, “Now we talkin’, you have three objectives, each different from the other”. Saying this he threw three photographs in front of him. “The first photograph is of Joseph Carter, the second is Frank Callum, and the last one is of Kristi Elizer. Now here’s what you will be doing. Joseph Carter is an undercover spy for the G.E.N.E.X, an organization that collects ancient relics. You have to create a case against him, busting him with proof of his relation to the organization, and stuff like that… You get the point. Frank Callum, is a model who is rumored to be cheating on his wife. You have to prove this wrong, and support him with valid resources. Kristi Elizer is the daughter of the third richest man in the country. She has been missing for a few days now. You have to make a report on this event. Is that clear?”.

At this point, it was complete fade out for Gerald. Failure to accomplish these tasks would mean death. With no choice, Gerald picked up the three photos, and began to leave the cabin. As he left, the boss growled, “Oh yeah, one more thing, If you try to run away or call for help, my men will make sure you don’t stay alive to tell your tale”

Gerald closed the door behind him. He wasn’t hired for this. He went back home, set up his bulletin, and cleared his table. He was a different man now. His only hope and escape was if he finished these tasks. As darkness slowly took over the city, Gerald sat down, pen in hand, making notes as he surfed the internet. Progress had to made.. And Fast!

Chapter 2

Chapter 2: Betrayal

Gerald lifted his head up from the table where he had fallen asleep. He wiped his groggy eyes, letting out a loud yawn simultaneously. Eyes widening when he glanced at the clock, Gerald got up abruptly, causing his chair to fly back and clatter against the wall. It was 11.30am already! Gerald's natural body clock ensured he never slept in and was always up at 6.00am sharp- whether he liked it or not.

He peeled off a post-it note from his cheek, eyebrows furrowing in confusion as he read the content. Scribbled on were 3 names: Joseph Carter, Frank Callum, and Kristi Elizer. That's when yesterday's events hit him. The company! The tasks! Panic-stricken, Gerald gazed over the assortment of documents spread out on the table- finally taking it all in. Pictures, newspaper articles, biographies- everything to do with these 3 people- were scattered across the table covering the entire surface. Gerald recalled the hours of research he put in last night, finding out anything he could about his targets.

He was jolted out of his thoughts by someone banging on his front door. He quickly moved to the windows to check who it was. An audible sigh of relief escaped from his mouth when he realised it was the mailman.

“G'day mate!” As soon as he opened the door, Gerald was greeted with a thick Aussie accent.

“Hello, how can I help you?” Gerald spoke warily.

“I'm here to talk about some changes to the terms and conditions of your subscription to Girlz Fashion Monthly. Can I come in?” It took a while for Gerald to decipher what he was saying due to his accent.

“Err...but I'm not subscribed to-” Gerald was cut-off mid-sentence as the man barged in swiftly shutting the door.

“Right, I don't have much time so listen carefully.” To Gerald's surprise, the man had dropped his thick accent and started talking normally.

“Who are you? What do you want?” Gerald had started to back away.

“I know about the company you work for. I know about the jobs.” Gerald froze. He could remember his boss making it very clear that if he so much breathed about what the company did, he wouldn't live to see the next day.

“W-who are you? Do you work for the company?” Gerald asked slowly.

“Yes...no. It's a long story. The point is I used to be in your shoes. I can help but I don't have much time. I've disabled the bugs they've put inside your house so they can't watch or listen to you but it's only good for 2 minutes.” The man started talking rapidly.

“You used to be in my... hang on, they're watching me?” Gerald's tone was one of shock and fear.

“That doesn't matter now. Do you want to stay alive or not?” After some time, Gerald nodded.

“Then listen carefully. They're framing you. Your 3 targets. The company is an organisation who are hired to kill people for clients. But they need someone to take the fall for each assassination. They've got you doing useless research because when an investigation is made of these murders, they'll need someone to blame. Someone who has recently been fixated on all 3 of these people. Someone who can close the case by going to prison in order for the organisation to remain hidden. ” The man stopped to take a breath. “...Someone like you.”

Gerald's jaw dropped and he could only gape at the supposed mailman as the news washed over him.

“2 minutes are up. I need to go.”

“Wait! Stop! What should I do?” Gerald was finally able to get words out of his mouth.

The man stopped, his hand on the door handle. “Find Kristi Elizer. If you find the person who kidnapped her, you might be able to get some answers and get out of this hole...before it's too late.”
With that, he was gone and Gerald was left wondering whether he even existed.

It took 3 hours after the mailman's visit before Gerald knew what he had to do. He needed to pay the man who had gotten him this job a visit. His uncle.

After a short drive of constantly checking his mirror for the fear of being followed, Gerald found himself before his uncle Oswald's front door. Despite some very loud banging, nobody answered. It seemed to him that either nobody was in, or nobody wanted to answer. Gerald made his way round to the back of the house and climbed over the fence to find the shed door open. Puzzled he walked in, his nerves on edge.

Gerald gasped. Slumped on the floor in the far corner was a young woman who was unconscious. Her arms and legs were tied and duct tape was placed on her mouth. Gerald had never met this woman before in his life, but he instantly recognised her. Kristi Elizer. The kidnapped daughter.

“It's a shame you found her.” Gerald spun around to come face to face with the person that spoke. His uncle Oswald.

“B-but...wha-why...” Gerald for the second time that day was at a loss for words.

He only glimpsed the swing of the baseball bat before he felt it smash against the side of his head with the force of a wrecking ball. Darkness invaded Gerald's vision long before he hit the ground.

Again, same question. End this in Chapter 3? Or continue it to further chapters?

Not yet, the third chapter should not be final.

Chapter 3: Escape

The next time he opened his eyes, he found himself in the shed room. He tried to move, but his limbs were tied. This was all too sudden, he still couldn’t believe it. His own uncle had deceived him. He could hear footsteps. Soon he found his uncle standing in the room. “I am sorry this has to be like this” He said.

He had a syringe in his hand. It took some time for Gerald to assess the situation. His uncle was going to sedate him. He was injected with some sort of drug, and then brought into shed room.

He had lost all hope. Just then he saw something lying in the corner of the room. He looked behind him. There in a dark corner was Kristi. She was asleep, probably injected with the same drug. Gerald thought of waking her, but he felt dizzy and fell unconscious. When he woke up, he found himself feeling much better. Kristi was still asleep. His life was in grave danger. He had to figure out a way to get out of here.

He looked out from a window. It was night, but he wasn’t sure exactly what time it was. There was complete silence, and he was pretty sure his uncle Oswald was sleeping. He started looking all over the room for something useful. The room he was in a very bad state, with lots of broken furniture. There were broken pieces of wood lying in one corner. He decided if he couldn’t find something useful, he would just have to make use of something useless. He found a nail coming out of an old table. He used it to cut his ropes.

With his limbs free, he started to devise a plan. Just then he realized something. If he was going to escape, he couldn’t do so alone. He had to get Kristi out of there with him, and he may even need her to escape I the first place.

He removed the duct tape from her mouth and woke her up. Then he undid her ropes and freed her hands and feet. “I am going to break us out of here, and I need your help” He said to her.

She was somewhat delighted to hear this but at the same time, she was also scared. She brought his attention to something very important he had overlooked. “How can we escape?” She asked

She was as clueless as him. Why didn't he think of it earlier? She must have been sedated regularly, so she didn't have any time to think of a plan. He knew he didn’t just need to break out of there, he had to do so without his uncle noticing. He had to minimize the noise they produce. He couldn't afford to wake up his uncle.  He pulled out the nail from the table and tried using it to open the lock. The lock was a good one, but after some effort, Gerald succeeded in opening it. Just when they were about to escape, an alarm sounded.

It was some sort of alarm connected to the lock! Gerald realized how foolish he had been to underestimate his uncle. They rushed to the outside. He said to Kristi, “You go out first, I’ll be right behind you.”

Kristi climbed out and called for Gerald, but he had other plans. He went into the room and picked up a broken piece of wood. Just as his uncle Oswald reached the outside of the door, he plunged at him with all his might. “An eye for an eye” He said.

He picked up the ropes and tied his uncle with it. It was time for some answers. He heard Kristi cry out for him again. He said, “You should go on without me, I have some unfinished business with this man”.

He told her that Oswald was his uncle, but when she asked for his name, he politely refused for he did not want her to get involved with him. He couldn’t endanger another person’s life. Kristi left and with that, he had betrayed his mission. He was now beyond the point of no return. He knew he had to do something to tackle the company. He had to bring them to justice.

He searched his uncle. In one of his pockets, he found a syringe filled with the same drug he was injected with. He put it in his own pocket and went inside the house. He was starting to feel hunger. He hadn't eaten anything since he was imprisoned. He went into the kitchen and found some bread and water. He started gulping down his meal. Just then, he heard a loud bang from outside. He was startled. As soon as he became aware of his surroundings, he sprang to his feet and rushed to the outside. He reached the shed room, only to find the shed door open and his uncle missing.

Shock

704 words

Gerald woke in a dimly lit room, with a desk adorned with pictures of a child that he recognised as himself. His vision was impeded by a crust of blood over his left eye, leaving him with blurred vision and a pair of broken spectacles that wouldn't fit properly over his swollen eye. He tasted the bitterness of his own blood in his mouth, which he quickly spit out onto what appeared to be a floor of solid concrete. Gerald could hear a vague whine in his ear. The next thing he knew, his eardrums were practically shattered by the sound of Oswald slamming open a dark door that Gerald hadn't noticed before. He quickly swiveled his head to the source of the noise and was immediately surprised by Oswald's appearance.

He was wearing a brown heavy-duty jacket with a fur hood and a pair of jeans that were ripped at the cuff. Oswald's face appeared to be bruised, and his eyes were sunken in, as if he had not gotten an hour of sleep. He walked with a distinct limp that Gerald noted was new. A cigarette was between his lips; odd, for his uncle had abandoned smoking ever since his childhood friend had died of lung cancer.

Oswald pulled a chair that had been in front of the desk out and seated himself. For more than a minute, an uncomfortable silence reigned between them.

In a nervous attempt at conversation, Gerald croaked, 'I... I didn't know you smoked.'

Oswald scoffed and spat the cigarette out of his mouth. 'There are many things you don't know about me, clearly.' He was rasping, as if someone had choked him recently.

Gerald recoiled and asked, 'What happened to you?'

Oswald laughed but his expression remained unamused. 'In the process of trying to preventing the higher-ups from forcibly waking you up, I was kicked and beaten for my insolence. Now I'm not so sure I should've even tried.'

Gerald contemplated Oswald's words, then replied, 'Mother would have wanted you to.'

Oswald, clearly taken by surprise, jumped up from his chair and walked over to Gerald. Oswald knelt and gripped Gerald's chin with his right hand, and moved Gerald's face only inches from his own. 'Your mother was a fool. I had told her to stay away from the man who became your father, but did she listen? Clearly not. Look where it landed her. She died with nothing to think of but a husband who left her and her good for nothing son!'

Gerald, unnerved, continued. 'Mother was a kind, loving, and caring woman. She told me to always trust my family, that they would never let me down. She believed in her family. She trusted you!'

Oswald threw Gerald's head back against the wall and scowled. 'That's why she's dead. She trusted anyone and everyone. Her death was caused by her husband. He left her with nothing, yet he expected her to care for a child. If you were to ask me, you'd be better off if you had died begging in the streets like your fool of a mother.'

The lack of emotion in Oswald's voice shocked Gerald. 'Why are you with this company, uncle? You were a good man once. What happened?'

Ignoring Gerald, Oswald returned to his seat, rolled over to Gerald, and continued, 'But let us get to the point. Are you going to write the article or must I force you to? The former would be much preferred, by the way.'

Affronted by Oswald's casualty, Gerald spat out, 'Of course not, you little son of a -'

Oswald smacked him across the cheek, cutting him off abruptly. 'Language, child. Besides, you're in no position to speak to me in that manner. Last chance, Gerald... will you or will you not write?' When Gerald remained resolutely silent, Oswald sighed and raised a small, grey microphone to his mouth, saying, 'Guard, there is something I need from you; do you mind? Thanks - I'm In Room 203.' Oswald smirked, 'And now, we wait.'

Gerald was stricken when a man who bore a remarkable similarity to Kristi walked into the room and gave a tittering laugh at Gerald's expression, then turned to face Oswald. 'Alexis Elizer, at your service.'

Chapter 3: Leap Of Faith

“But what if I drown?” 8-year old Gerald started backing away from the edge of the diving board.

“You're not going to drown. I'm right here.” His uncle Oswald replied reassuringly. “I made a promise to your parents to look after you. Do you think I'd break that now?”

“B-but it's so high up.” Gerald's voice was trembling as he desperately tried not to look down but only failing.

“Just imagine how happy you'll feel when you conquer this fear,” Oswald spoke softly trying to encourage the boy.

“AAAAAAAHHH!” Eyes held tightly shut, Gerald ran up to the edge and jumped.

A few seconds later the boy emerged out of the water, a wide beam across his face as he swam over to his uncle.

“Did you see that? Uncle, did you see? I did it! I jumped!” The boy couldn't contain his excitement as he climbed out of the pool and made his way back up to the diving board again.

“Attaboy! I knew you could do it.” A small smile appeared on Oswald's face. “Sometimes you just have to take a leap of faith..”

_______________________________________________________________________________________________

Gerald woke up. The first thing that hit him was a throbbing headache that made him feel like his skull was going to split in half. He squinted at the dim lighting above him. He was still in his uncle's shed.

“We didn't think you were ever going to wake up, Gerald.” The voice sent chills down his spine. He didn't need to turn around to find out who it belonged to.

The boss was sat at a wooden table in the middle of the shed. He moved a piece on what seemed to be a dusty chess board. On the other side of the rickety table sat Stephanie- the company secretary. At this point, Gerald wasn't even shocked to find out Stephanie was associated with the company's illegal activities.

“You know I admire chess. A logical game indeed...” The boss spoke- still not looking at Gerald- as he moved a pawn forward. “So here is my proposition Gerald.”

Still, Gerald couldn't take his eyes off the chess board.

Why aren't I dead? They should have killed me as soon as I found Kristi Elizer.

“You found Kristi Elizer and I'm sure by now you've figured out what this company does.” The boss seemed to read Gerald's exact thoughts.

“Oswald should've concealed young Miss Elizer a lot better. He made a mistake. A mistake that might just end up costing his own life.”

“Are you going to kill me?” Gerald blurted out. Silently, he cursed himself.

“Now Gerald! Where on earth did you get that idea from?” The boss's tone seemed patronising- as if he was talking to a child. “At the moment you've not gone against the company and you couldn't help the fact that you found Kristi Elizer, could you? No, right now you are my friend. And I like to offer my friends...a deal shall we say. ”

“W-what is it?” Gerald tried to keep his voice steady.

“The mistake that Oswald made could have been dangerous for the company. And we can't have that, can we? Keeping Oswald in this organisation would be risky. And risks have to be...eliminated.” Suddenly, the atmosphere in the shed became very cold. “Here's the deal. I'm going to give you a gun loaded with a single bullet. I want you to kill Oswald...”

The boss finally looked up from his game of chess and nodded to the corner. Gerald slowly turned his gaze to where the boss motioned and tried to stifle his gasp. There slumped in the corner...was his uncle. Oswald had duct tape over his mouth but he was wide awake. His eyes were expressionless. No fear, but no recognition either when he looked at Gerald.

The boss clicked his fingers and a man appeared out of the shadows. He held out a gun for Gerald to take. He reluctantly took it in his hand, the cool metal surprisingly heavy for its size.

“It should be easy considering your uncle betrayed you.” The boss continued speaking in a flat tone now. “Kill Oswald, and you're free to go. If you don't kill him...well let's just say there's going to be one body bag coming out of here either way.”

Gerald slowly lifted the gun to point it at Oswald. This man had betrayed him. He hadn't given it a second thought before making Gerald the company's fall guy. His uncle was ready to let Gerald go to prison and even die without batting an eyelid. The gun seemed to get heavier.

Could he really kill another man? No. He couldn't take a life...his uncle's life. Slowly he lowered the gun.

This company can kill me if they want. I'm not becoming a murderer for them.

“Check.” The boss's voice caused him to jump and almost drop the gun. Gerald forgot about the game his boss seemed to be so engrossed in.

Chess. His uncle was unbeatable at chess. Gerald could vividly remember all the games they played all those years ago and not being able to win once. Oswald would always be five, six moves ahead. Gerald looked into his uncle's eyes. Cold...calculating.

Could it be?

Sometimes you have to take a leap of faith.

Gerald raised the gun once more. He pulled the trigger…

Here's my entry -

Chapter 3 - A Ray of Hope?

"........" Gerald tried to scream, but in vain. He had his mouth taped as he saw himself in a dark room with a very small window and a door, which obviously had to be locked. "Damn, how do I get outta here, how do I save that girl from my uncle? Jesus, a man from my family planning against me? Involved in kidnapping of the daughter of a business tycoon? I can't even imagine", thought Gerald. Suddenly, the door opened making a loud noise.

In came the Uncle, the reason Gerald joined the company, the reason Gerald was here was this guy. "Stop trying baby, you won't be heard by anyone. Don't worry, I've got everything set for you. But first, have some food, or you won't be alive for doing the work, haha!", said Gerald opening the tape from his mouth. "WHAT DO YOU WANT?" yelled Gerald. "Ehh, poor guy, c'mon, eat this." said Oswald, smacking the bread piece into Gerald's mouth. "Now get to the point" fumed Oswald, "you already know what to do. Don't think about me, don't think about that girl, just think about yourself and your life. And...wait. Don't be over-smart kid, boss has his men around you. One mistake and 5 rounds of 7 bullets each will be pulled out of your corpse and aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhh...!" out came a smack from the little 23 year old Kristi, from the same baseball bat with which Gerald was hit. The Uncle fell unconscious right there. Kristi made Gerald free and they both ran away from that place to the old farmhouse of Gerald, far away from where they lived, Gerald assumed that none of the men of his boss will be there. "I'm sure Carlos's men won't be here.", said Kristi. Then began a conversation which lasted about 3 hours.

Gerald - Who is Carlos?

Kristi - Are you serious? Carlos is your boss. Didn't you ever learn what his name was? You seem to be a real dumb. Anyways, his name is Carlos Finch and he's up to a lot more than you think.

Gerald - (feeling ashamed) Alright, to be honest I never tried to learn about this job. I was running in all 4 directions for a job when my Uncle suggested this job to me. It was a good package, a good salary and it forced me to just agree without thinking. My uncle said that we are working in a private firm running some petrol or diesel and petrol pump related business.

Kristi - Haha, at least you know something. Anyways, let's get to the point. We are in a real big trap. I know you don't know this, which is why I'm informing you, my dad Mr Gonzales Elizer and Carlos are business rivals.

Gerald - Please tell me more about this.

Kristi - Alright listen. Carlos always has been competing with us. He was so obsessed with us that he somehow wanted to win against us, by hook or by crook. Suddenly, he started getting more profit and he went far more ahead which was..more than a miracle for any business firm. My dad decided to get into depth of this. He sent 2 of his men to one of their petrol pumps, trying to figure out what was something which was hidden. They found out that he was involved in a huge illegal scandal. Daddy immediately collected the proofs and Carlos was proved culprit. He lost millions and it was more than a huge loss for anyone. All this happened 7 years back, when I was not even a graduate. After Carlos was released from prison, he decided to ruin us. But of course, he did not stop his business by that time. All began in such great coordination as if nothing happened. All was same, illegal stuff, false propaganda, encounters, etc. But this time around, he was far more alert and never let anyone get proof. He illegally made new candidates sign some documents which forced them to stick to the job at all costs, holding their family members at gun-points. When everything became stable for him, he started planning attacks on us. My brother almost died as he was shot near his ribs by their men. Carlos has some trusted people, which includes your Uncle, Mr. Oswald. All you can do now, is gather proof and prove him wrong in front of the judge, or get yourself killed. Because, you're not gonna stay alive anyway.

Gerald - Sad life dear, you've faced a lot in such a young age.

Kristi - Kinda used to it now, I'm kidnapped for the second time and I've ran for the second time.

Gerald - Now all we need to do is get to your place and think about further plans, but for now I can only imagine tasty food, I'm hungry since a day or so.

Kristi - As if I've gulped in all food. Anyways, let's move ASAP and wait for some cab outside. It's 6 AM anyway

As Gerald opened the door, he was shocked. Stood there in front of him, was the brown haired so-called boss of Gerald, Carlos. He was not alone, he had a nice shining gun in his hand aimed at Gerald's forehead. For a change Kristi seemed scared as she hid herself behind Gerald. Carlos started to move his fingers towards the trigger and...... To Be Continued

Wow!
Im amazed at the way the contest has begun and continued..
Good Job G.E
I just logged into tanki online after all these months, basically from the time i submitted my entry to now..
I’m so glad i got the honor of beginning this edition’s story.
I had not planned to do so..
Just entered the contest for fun and went on to continue writing a book based on the same title in real life. I'm hoping to release it this December. Never expected to win here though! Anyways now that i have some free time, i’ll think about making an entry although i wish i could have taken part in the second chapter Because now i’ll have to continue where G. E left off
Thanks again Flexie

Btw in the book that I’m writing, Oswald dies in the second chapter (spoiler) :P

Probably, but I’m writing a book about this story in real life, and in my story he dies in the second chapter..

Yup, I was just saying that a lot of people seem to think he should be killed off.

baseball bat? hiding a hostage in his own home?  at first this organization seemed like a pretty top notch one... isn't baseball bat used by some budget criminals? and who'd be stupid enough to hide a hostage in his own home...

now i'm confused between whether to take this organization as one that's gonna be easy to bust... or one that's gonna take waaaaay more than this next chapter
