Hmmm...

I was slighly confused. So you have cosecant, secant and cotangent. That seems a strangish name. I would imagne it to be cosecant, secant and cotancant or something like that.

By the way, what are the above ratios used  for?

This might get messy. I would prefer to draw it up. But i am using my phone.

The things u would have learnt

Sin = opposite / hypotenuse

Cos = adjacent /hypotenuse

Tan = opposite / adjacent

Trig ratio are just reciprocals of the basic trig ratios: sin, cos, and tan.

Cosec = hypot / oppo = 1/sin

Sec = hypot / oppo = 1/cos

Cot = adj / oppo = 1/tan

How i remember is by looking at the last letter. Example co= Tan

well, i kinda didnt have to remember it. Coz its was on the formula sheet.

Dont mind how messy it looks. Its double sided filled with equation. I took math serious back then XD

Dont mind the red box. Its just more advantaged topics. Hopefully u dont have to learn................

Khan academy helped me alot last year with math

You kinda need to know the basic coz it gets interesting later on

Like solve sec A / cos A

     1/cos A

=   -----------

      1/sin A

        1                     1

=  -----------    ÷    --------

       cos  A             sin A

         1                 sin A

= -------------  X    -----------

        cos A               1

        sin A

=  ------------

       cos A

=   tan A

Is that calculus I see?

On the formula sheet, yup

Just the basics only.

Honestly half of the formula sheet is useless for me. Coz, its much better to remember it.

But its handy sometimes. Glad they hand it out during exams  :ph34r:

Thanks for explaining that! I know very little calculus, namely how to derive a very simple term such as x^2 (the derivative for which I believe is 2x?). The Cosecant and Secant and Cotangent are quite fascinating then. Does this imply that Cosecant/Secant = tangent?

Yes that is correct x^2 the first derivative would be 2x. Second derivative would be 2. Third derivative would be zero

Wait till u learn integration XD

But sometimes the question might say: "prove that cosec / sec = tan"

Then u just do the working out to prove it

Basically u probably need to remember these two:

1) sin x / cos x = tan x

2) cos x / sin x = cot x

There are more intense one but thats only if u go and do harder math levels. These are called trig function as tan, sec and cot, cosec. But u really just need the trig function as sin and cos (which are the ones u been asked).

In general, if f(x)=x^n, then f'(x)=nx^(n-1)

5th grade used to be so easy, I made easy 100 on every test I took

Now Im over here making 40s-60s on daily grades in math

Mathematics is the Best discovery of man  :wub:

Ever all the other discovery Just happened because of it

Imagine space travel without calculus  :)

Is mathematics really a discovery though? Or is it something invented by man?

Whatever it may be, it is the single most amazing thing that exists. Without it, nothing can exist. I'm assuming that to prove me wrong, you will most likely post something that works without maths, but there's no such thing. Even in English there's maths. For example rhyming, the amount of letters in the alphabet as well as other things.

To say that everything "uses" math requires a definition of what math is. What does it mean for something to "work using math?" Both English and the alphabet are human constructs, and I would say the universe can exist without humans.

Saying that nothing can exist without math implies that math is a natural kind, that is, it exists independently of humans. This is what the first person was saying, that mathematics is a "discovery." I disagree.

Spoken like a true mathematician! You're right though. If we were to define mathematics as any equation, expression or otherwise involving numbers in any way whatsoever, then by that definition maths is everywhere.

Math does exist independently I think, even if it's in very simple forms such as how many galaxies are in the universe.

Imagine all the discoveries ,topics etc were the parts of the house like window , door etc

Mathematics would be the base which upon those were built

2 + 2 IS 4 - 1 THATS 3, QUICK MAFS

Well, this was expected to happen someday

Also, your math is flawed

2+2=4

4-1=3

2+2≠4-1

2+2≠3

4-1=3

What you are saying is that 2+2 is equal to 4-1 because you don't put in any pause between the 4 and the -1. This creates the equation 2+2=4-1 #! which is wrong. 2+2≠4-1

You would be better off saying two plus two is four, minus one that's three quick mafs.

In that sentence, the comma provided a break after the four, which makes

2+2=4 ✓

[4]-1=3 ✓
