Spotting system

Recommended Posts

Okay hear me out; What makes turrets like Shaft and Magnum so effective? The unbroken line of sight and infinite view ranges for one, but aside from that visibility is never an issue. I propose a simple spotting system based on how visible a target is and taking in paints. For example; If you're in a desert map wearing the Disco paint on a Mammoth, you would be extremely easy to spot because you stand out like a sore thumb. But if you were wearing, say, orange or sandstone, an enemy would have to get closer to see you.

Obviously this would balance Shaft and Magnum out by needing someone to play the role of a scout in order to know where to shoot, but as a downside camouflage would become meta and that might upset people.

Tl;Dr I've been playing too much WOT.

Actually a spotting system should favour weapons like Shaft, as Shaft has a magnifying scope sight.

And I have to say I am not very experienced with Magnum.. but each time I use it on long range I simply aim on the "typical map locations" (like defense spots, map hideouts, position behind cover, ...). I do not even need to see them, as the damage indicators tell me where the enemies are and how many of them are there.

So.. I doubt it will harm those two turrets.

But it will harm Smoky, Thunder and Rail.

And it will harm a game's income source, as all those stylish paints will be more of a disadvantage in battles as they are today.

I agree that paint shouldn't be a requirement, that's the downside here, but I'd argue it would emphasize the importance of close to mid range turrets as the spotters to relay the enemy positions to the team. This would also encourage more diversity among turrets and might thin out the number of Magnums around. Everybody seems to want that.

I feel like it's already enough of a challenge when a target is far away and wearing a camouflage paint. I didn't play with Shaft that much, but I always had massive difficulty actually hitting targets that are far away and partially covered, even if I see exactly where they are. As for Magnum, there's the challenge of actually getting the right power and angle to hit a spot far away AND leading it if the target is moving. So making it even harder to hit enemies far away is unnecessary.

Still it won't change much on the magnun issue we have today.

Most maps we have today provide too few "usual camping spots" where a magnum just has to shoot at in order to hit someone. Those are under constant bombardment.

And the other 50% of the people who dislike Magnum, face those shortrange Magnums, that own a 50% Magnum paint and try to make use of the large per-shot damage.

I don't like to say that magnum is balanced (I play it to rarely to judge that) but I fear your proposal does not change that.

A Magnum would still be able to shot & kill at shortrange and still be able to bombard the usual spots without a need to have them spotted first.

It would make the midrangers more important in order to make the longrangers work.

But as long as the midrangers do not get a benefit from doing so, they won't do any more of it then today.

in WOT you get scrore for spotting and asissting. I think you should add this to your proposal in order to work a bit better.

If you like to boost midrangers by a spotting system, you could give them some kind of range extension if they aim at a target that is actually out of their range, but at the same time spotted by someone else of their own team.

So a Rico would have it's usual range as today, but it would be enabled to hit targets outside it's orginal range, only by direct hits, and only if this target is "spotted" by a teammate of the rico (I do not say it sounds balanced.. but I say it would give those turrets a boost).
