Writers' Corner Discussion

I think they're referring to the AWC archive topic which lists all the writers past and present and their writings. Link We def wouldn't remove any of the articles from the archives themselves. except for maybe the ones flabs wrote.

Looking over my own body of work, I see that the majority of my stories are now in the Amateur Writing Archive. Does this mean that, if you choose to remove the archive, those all disappear?

Plus, forces are at work to restart the updating of the archives.

No, we're not talking about the Amateur Writing Archive itself, we're talking about a side topic in the archive section called "AWC Archive." It's a topic that contains links to a bunch of the articles from former AWC members.

The full AWS archive area will definitely remain in effect. So no worries - your articles will be safe and sound.

Musing on muses...

Are you the type of writer who views this as a job? Do you have a goal to write a certain number of hours per day/week/month, and hold yourself to those hours? Do you find that the words flow whenever you turn the tap?

Or are you the type who has no idea when you'll write next, or what it will be about? Do you find yourself mid-story when all you did was sit down to check your email? Do you look up to realize it's 4AM, and you've been writing nonstop since supper?

Two authors I really respect and admire are Isaac Asimov and Stephen King. Both have phenomenal bodies of work. Amimov wrote over 400 books, both science fiction and science fact. King has a body of work that is both smaller and more narrow, but is still pretty impressive. And both are about as different as two authors can be.

When Asimov talks about writing, he simply writes when the opportunities present themselves. He had no problem with using a five-minute window to add to a book. He has a preface where he talks about going to visit family, and the various children around the house were admonished to leave him be so he could work. He was unaware of this, and simply marveled at the fact he spent an entire day writing without interruption. When the subject came up at dinner that night, he told the children to come and see him as they pleased. His workflow was thereafter constantly interrupted by demands for play, storytelling, etc. Still, he managed to complete several chapters in his current project.

King, in one of his prefaces, uses the delightful phrase "and then my muse defecated* on my brain." (He didn't say 'defecated,' though). Apparently, he writes as though possessed while in the throes of creativity.

Personally, I go through periods of relatively-higher creativity, usually about for a month each year. This tends to coincide with summer vacation, so it may just be a case of the brain having the free time to indulge in creativity. Even with my works here, I tend to get into a frenzy and write 3-5 stories, then coast until suddenly I have nothing to post and less than a week on my self-imposed deadline. I'm pretty proud I've only missed one week so far!

Actually, right now, I should be working on next week's release. I know what it is, and I know the overall plot, but it needs to get out of my fingers. But I'm between surges right now, so I'm going to have to try and force this one out.

So, this isn't really a question, but just an invitation for you to ramble on your own personal writing style and habits.

Musing on muses...

Interesting stuff. Personally, I started writing as a way to put things that I couldn't otherwise talk about into words, which is something that I still do on and off. More recently though, ideas hit me at random times - like, say, when I'm walking up the stairs, or just reading something. Usually it's like an image and a story to go with it gets flashed into my mind. For example, for Stargazer, it was an image of the roof of my mates house, under the stars, with the silhouette of someone sitting at the edge of it, along with the story,  and I knew I had to write it right then or the inspiration would go *poof*.

I also usually have my headphones on with music playing in the background, and sometimes it has to be a very specific song or artist to keep the flow going (Spotify is bae). It's a very...varied selection most of the time, jumping from Jimi Hendrix to the Foo Fighters to NewRetroWave.

One thing I try not to do is to force myself to write, especially for fiction. Writing is something that I do for myself, with no reward or prize expected (Except reviews. Gotta love the reviews), and I try to keep it that way.

I can totally relate. If the music is bad, I churn out 1 paragraph in one hour, if the music is epic, I'm only limited by my typing speed. As for ideas, creative ideas come to me when I'm wet under rain. I figure out details when under the shower, and when attending parties where I don't know a single person worth talking to (strike the last 3 words and it's still pretty true).

As for interviews, which happens to be the bulk of the work I publish at the AWS (I do not publish a lot of things for personal reasons) as of now, well, it's a mechanical process. I do interviews for my readers, everything else for myself. I'm certainly not saying I do not enjoy interviews, but I certainly do not enjoy it as much as I enjoy reading' twee's work. Yeah, I use 'enjoyment attained from reading twee's work' as my benchmark.

I write to be famous.

I write to have fun.

I write to exorcise my demons.

I write to arrange my thoughts in order.

I write because I like stories.

I write anytime, anywhere, but there is places and time that are more fertile.

I don't write when there is anime on.

Is there a way to do columns or tables in the body of a post?

GF standing in front of a green screen.

MUSIC up and under: Federates States’ national anthem.

GF: Hello. You may recognize my face from the evening news. I’m General Fred.

I made the above 3-column table in Google Docs. When I paste it in, is looks like a table, but black-on-black. When I clear the formatting, it still looks like a table, although the formatting has changed a bit. But when I try to edit, it suddenly becomes simple text. If I try to look at it in the BBCode Mode, it reverts to simple text, and when I switch modes back, it remains simple text unless I hit "Undo"

Make your columns or tables in a Google Document, and color the slots to be a dark color so it doesn't stand out too much from the forums. Then you can screenshot the page, crop out everything around the table, and upload it to a site like Imgur. From there, you can easily just have it as an image in your article, instead of as text. It's worked for me in the past.

I guess it's really a question of whether I love you all enough to undertake this. It's obviously for an upcoming story.

I think I've an inkling on why you might be using tables, but I'll wait and see what you're up to.. keep it up ;).

Apparently, it's not obvious this is meant to be a joke. To all those whose sense of humor differs from my own, and to whom this appeared as some form of self-aggrandizement, I apologize. That certainly wasn't my intention.

I'll refrain from attempting humor outside the bounds of my stories.

I'm sorry the joke flew over me, taking offence where none was meant. I'm sure it's my fault, and I'm the only one who misunderstood. There's no need to be harsh on yourself, as I said, I'm sure others got your humour, me being the only deviant.

I apologise.

I think we may be a pair of mismatched deviants!

(That, BTW, was meant to be humorous.)  ;)

I dunno if this is the right place to post this, but can we just take a moment to appreciate the old TWG? Of the former members who actually wrote quality stuff that wasn't plagiarised, most have become reporters. That's a pretty remarkable accomplishment considering we were some of the most hated people on the forum at the time lol.

Here's a list of the ones who've made it:

Pdox (Hexed)

marc.jp (Marc)

Destrod

Yis

BTRB (Quantum)

Me

There may be others too; not sure. Just thought that this was kinda cool .
