Earth Day

April 22 is Earth Day. What will you be doing to help Mother Earth?

I'll be joining several Organizations in replanting a forest that was wiped out by an arsonist. We start tomorrow and expect to work on the project for a week (or until we run out of trees). If at the end of the week we still have trees left, the project keeps going.

So, what are your plans? (Making Tanki beautiful doesn't count).

Nice to see people thinking about the earth. Me and my friends are going to support a group planting trees. (We would help, but none of us are green thumbs. We touch a tree, it shrivels and dies :P)

You don't need to be physically helping. Gofers play an important role, too.

I will cut down a tree and build a house for birds even though they live on trees.

I have a better idea. If you want to build a birdhouse, use some scrap lumber or buy a kit and build one. No need to cut down a whole tree. If you want to help the birds, you can build a bird sanctuary in your backyard. Here's your check list:

1...Birdseed of all types, including black and striped sunflower seeds and cracked corn. A few unshelled raw peanuts mixed in are good, too. Not cooked, roasted or salted.

2...A shallow container full of water for them to drink and take a bath in.

3...A nest bag. (I'll explain further down)

4...Birdhouses for shelter and to rear their youngsters. Put the houses in the trees or on poles at varying heights. Put tin around the opening (hole) to keep the predators out. Make sure it's well shaded.

A nest bag holds bits of nesting materials. What you will need:

1...Pieces of nylon netting no smaller than 8 inches square, 12 inches square is better.

2...String of varying lengths

3...Bits of yarn any color. But they prefer bright colors.

4...Small bits of cloth

5...Small bits of tin foil or anything shiney that won't harm the birds or their hatchlings.

How to make it:

Spread out the nylon squares. Add the above materials. Fold the corners together check to be sure the bags are no more than half full, then tie tightly. Hang the bags from trees, bushes, any place where they can see them.

Some birds like to line their nest with bits of plastic from shopping bags. So, you might cut up some plastic bags into 1, 2, 3 inch squares and put into a container large enough for the birds to shift through and pick out what they want.

I had a Bird Sanctuary in my backyard for many years. We loved watching the birds build their nests, feed the babies, encouraging the youngsters out the nest to try out their wings and learn to hunt for food. They would flit around from bush to bush, then from bush to trees and then into the sky to make a life of their own. I finally had to take it all down because the neighborhood became overrun with feral cats. The nights were alive with their meowing, screeches and cat fights. I cried because I had no way of explaining to the returning nesting birds why their Sanctuary was no more.  :(

It's great that people are remembering important days like these  :)

Earth Day is everyday. We should treat the earth as we treat ourselves. If those who read my words can understand, then treat yourselves well.  :)

Very well said!  ;)

Yeah I know. I guess my reaction was a bit serious.

I didn't think it was pointless. It's an attempt to educate anyone who may be interested. Besides, I was enjoying my walk down Memory Lane. Too bad you couldn't put your imagination to work and walk down it with me instead of viewing it as pointless.
