Hello Tankers! In case you had not heard, the Newspaper is celebrating its 6 year anniversary! We would like to dedicate this month to celebrating all past and current reporters and newspaper administrators for their work that was put into this project. Also, to those that read and enjoy the newspaper; you are the reason why we’ve made it this far.

Now, the purpose of this topic is to welcome in a new generation of readers and writers to the newspaper. This is a writing contest but that doesn’t mean someone who enjoys reading can’t participate. Invite your friends to take part and show them what the newspaper has to offer!

Overview

Let’s briefly discuss the structure of the contest before we get into the details. You must pick one type of article to write; either a guide, review, or story. It is up to you to pick the topic but it has to fit within the boundaries of the chosen category. You have over one month to pick your topic and write your article to be submitted via forum PM to a special newspaper account.

I. Categories

An author may only submit one article in one category.

pcgoBfk.png

An article is considered a guide if it is providing instructions on how to do something, such as how to use a turret or hull, or how to play on a certain map. Those are just a few specific examples that deal with certain game objects. Guides can also be based on gameplay concepts like camping, capturing flags, or passing the rugby ball. If you are good at giving instructions, this is a great category for you.

Z3g2n4h.png

An article is considered a review if it expresses an opinion based on given facts, such as a review of an update or event. Specific examples could be about the new mission chains update or an eSports or Parkour competition. If you have strong opinions that you are willing to share, this the category for you.

yAN6gBe.png

An article is considered a story if it tells the tale of fictional events. The story can be based on a non-fictional event but cannot be an exact copy and must be fictionalized. Everything from the classic murder mystery to talking fairies and galloping unicorns; the sky's the limit. If you have a limitless imagination, then look no further.

II. Rules

  1. One person can only submit an article on one account. If multiple participants are using the same network, proof of there being two individuals must be provided
  2. One person can only submit in one article category
  3. All participants that are being considered for prizes must have followed by the EULA and Game rules for the duration of the contest and as recently as 3 months before the contest began
  4. The submission itself must not violate the EULA or Game Rules
  5. Plagiarism is strictly forbidden. Violators will be disqualified and banned from future Newspaper contests.
  6. The organizers of this contest reserve the right to disqualify submissions at its discretion
  7. Entries in the Guide and Review categories must be related to Tanki in some way. Entries in the Story category are not required to be related to Tanki in terms of subject matter.
  8. The article submitted must be at least 400 words in length
  9. To make the judging process move quicker, only articles written in English will be considered

III. Judging

This contest is organized by the Newspaper administration and is judged by the administration and newspaper reporters. Entries will be judged based on performance in the following areas:

  • Topic
  • Grammar and punctuation
  • Formatting
  • Consistency

2nd place - A Guide to Isida by @SumedhKudale504 - 100,000 crystals + 2 containers + 2 gold boxes

Isida, in a nutshell, is a unique weapon. Given this information, it opens a variety of unique play styles to the user, but take note now lest you be disappointed in the future: Isida is by no means a raw offensive threat. Still, countless tankers haplessly wield this tool, ignoring the gravity of the responsibilities it requires and becoming more of a liability than an ally. This guide is made for the sole purpose of diminishing their number, and in their place, sprouting responsible and capable users of Isida.
This guide covers tips on how to use Isida to its full potential, its strengths and weaknesses, its functions with different combinations, strategies against different weapons, and we will even touch on its history.
The Amazing History of Isida

Isida first came out on September 28th, 2009. Since the beginning of Tanki, only Smoky, Firebird, Twins and the Fear Machine (Railgun) were out, and Tanki knew that to increase their player base, a wider range of weapons and tanks were required. As a healing and damaging weapon, Isida significantly changed gameplay. Up to that point, the player pool consisted almost entirely of Dictator-Railgun at high ranks, due to their massive advantage against the “Tier-1” weapons and tanks. However, the introduction of Isida brought an entirely new facet to the game, being one of the only two methods of restoring a player's health in the game (the first obviously being a Repair Kit). Isida Mania didn't kick in immediately, however, since seasoned veterans still preferred to use Fear Machine instead. However, this new weapon made sure that Tanki Online's overall gameplay would never be the same again.
Isida's history is pockmarked with the scars of many past mechanical reorganisations. After it was first brought to the field, Isida sported several characteristics that may sound completely absurd at the moment – for example, it used to be able to self-repair itself without attacking an enemy. Just by holding the Spacebar down, you could slowly boost your health, even with nobody within range. This mechanic was removed two weeks later after developers realised the ability was incredibly overpowered, and not suited for Tanki's gameplay.

On December 30th, 2009, Isida was shifted from healing in “Percentage” to healing in “HP”. To put it simply, Isida formerly healed by "HP in comparison to the full life of the tank". Its points were given by the percentage of the tank it healed. Afterwards, the points given to an Isida were given by the amount of health they actually gave back. So, previously, healing a Wasp was easier to get points than a Mammoth. However, now, a Mammoth would give you lots more if it was low on health due to its higher health to heal, but it'd use up more of your fuel reserve.

Also, a fact you may not have known about Isida: the bringing of Isida into the game changed the supply name from “Double Damage”, as it was called then, to the current name of “Double Power”; since Isida didn't only 'damage' the opponent.
Another subsequent update also changed the point gathering abilities of Isida. Now, one only receives points once they let go of the spacebar, not simply after performing the repairs. Thus, if you are in the middle of healing and you suddenly perish, you do not receive any points, due to the fact you failed to let go of the spacebar. As an Isida, it is key to remember: if you're on very low health, repeatedly tap spacebar as you heal an injured ally. This will mean you can get a small collection of extra points you would not get if you held on and were suddenly killed.

Come the end of the 2016 fall season, another update cut down Isida down to size, since its damage per second and vampire-like health suction abilities had reached obscene levels and popularity. Healing and damage were no longer equivalent, with the weapon's healing factor being overall decreased. This way, trains of Isidas could no longer stay alive indefinitely and ruin the balance of many TDM and CP matches.

Basic Stats What is it and what does it do?

Isida has the shortest effective range of all weapons in Tanki Online, but it happens to have the highest damage per second, even compared to its two siblings, Firebird and Freeze. However, its special effect is unlike any other, allowing it to repair another tank's wounds just as quickly as it can damage an enemy. If you're the kind of player that loves charging about the field and ripping opponents to pieces, this is not the weapon for you. Even the vampiric effect of Isida's attack mode won't do much to keep a fighter alive for much longer, only preventing one or two shots from destroying them at top performance.
This brings us to the subject of Isida's healing powers, of which have two prongs. It has the ability to heal teammates by pressing spacebar against then as you would an enemy. Instead of a yellow, orange or red beam, they'll be met with a friendlier blue or green beam instead.

Pros and Cons of Isida Pros
Plus.png A healing ability that also gathers experience.
Plus.png Adaptive shooting that allows the beam to strike anywhere on the hull.
Plus.png An excellent team player.

Cons
Minus.png Shorter range than Freeze and Firebird.
Minus.png Only can attack/heal one person at a time.
Minus.png Awful camping weapon, unless it's a method of ally repair.

Since we have covered a short overview of the weapons of Isida, it'd be pertinent at this time to evaluate each of its sets. What is the best hull to accompany this weapon? All combinations with Isida can set itself upon are listed below in detail as a short overview of the best places to use each of the combos. Also, this will list the worst and best overall combinations.
Wasp

We start with the weakest, but fastest hull – Wasp. People generally favour speed with Isida, and for good reason: evasion is a great tactic to cheat death with. While it's not the champion of killstreaks or anything like that, it's effective in dashing from teammate to teammate to send a lifeline to defensive outposts, such as a Titan/Vulcan overseeing the field from the cliffs of a Serpuhov. The low health of Wasp causes it to not be the best hull generally in a supply war, as most parameters are doubled and can spell trouble for a Wasp that receives a minimal defensive boost from multipliers. Don't forget that the key with an Isida-Wasp is to aid someone in grabbing the flag, or to take it and run in the event that you should run into trouble yourself.
Best Scenario: No Supplies Battles, Medium-Sized Maps (e.g. Iran, Red Alert)
Hunter

This combination has dropped in popularity since the global balance update of late 2016, where it lost its infamous health retaining capabilities. Unfortunately, the sight of a Hunter is rare on the battlefield, though it has its uses as an alternative medium hull with more strength and torque than the likes of Viking. The versatility of the tank is phenomenal. It can defend effectively, as well as attack – but does it work with Isida? In some cases, the answer to that would still be yes - Hunter is a very effective compliment to Isida. Hunter/Isida has the necessary speed an Isida requires be offensive and yet the life that can sustain it long enough to escape. However, this would ultimately be better for TDM and CP steadfast techniques, as to keep heavily opponents alive while dealing extra supportive damage to enemies.

Best Scenario: Medium Map No Supplies Battles, Supply Wars, Large Maps

Titan

There's a reason why you don't often see a Titan/Isida in a battlefield, especially as you reach the higher end of the rank roster. This tank, judged by many as the ugliest combo, is one of the most ill-fitting, too, unable to see effective use in maps like Serpuhov, Red Alert, or even Polygon in several instances. However, if by any chance you encounter a very small map (e.g. Island; Farm), turned into a supply war, with lots of Badger family modules on the enemy team up to the rank of Commander, then it may be wise to use Titan/Isida M3 in this scenario. However, it is rare to find a map suited for this combination, as Isida requires nearby teammates and enemies alike to be effective. Thus, a steady supply of supplies is necessary for using this combination if you're planning on tackling any medium sized team map.

It needs to be remembered that Isida is not a camping weapon. It can heal other defensive tanks effectively but that's the limit of its effectiveness. Trying flag sitting tactics with Isida only occasionally works, but there are far better weapons for this role, such as Twins, Thunder, or if your heart's set on a proximity weapon, Freeze.

Best Scenario: Small Map Supply Wars

Dictator

The combination of Isida and Dictator has always been an effective and common combination. As both were Tier 1.5, many people used such before the rebalance, especially as they progressed up to the Warrant Officer ranks. There was also a large influx of Dictator/Isidas before the “Tier 2s” came out, back in the old days (read above in “History” section). Nowadays, seeing Isida paired up with a Dictator is a rare day indeed, since Isida and a high torque aren't exactly a complimenting combination. Not only this, but its speed is subpar in comparison to its other medium class brothers, Viking and Hunter, and it no longer has extraneous health to rationalise its use. However, Dictator gives Isida one unique advantage through its design: height. With the alteration equipped, this means that Isida can literally strike from just about any angle, making it an incredible camping asset for Polygon CPs and Gravity TDMs and CTFs.

Best Scenario: Maps with many ramps (e.g. Polygon, Gravity)

Hornet

Who hasn't seen one of these? It's as if the whole Tanki community is addicted to the combination of Hornet/Isida. Yet, is it as good as people make out? What makes it so popular?
The secret lies within its similarities to Wasp/Isida: nimble, decent speed, and excellent at chasing down opponents and allies alike, though the latter is certainly more exemplified. The only difference between Hornet and Wasp now lies in the overall top speed and overall crystals spared. Since Hornet is slower than Wasp at top modification by approximately 0.5 units, and is ultimately more difficult to control, the real reason to use this over Wasp is its overall torque, more stable design, and cheaper expense.
Best Scenario: Pretty much any medium/large map

Viking

Isida, according to statistics and general logic, is better in more situations with faster tanks. The combination of Isida with a slightly heavier tank won't always unilaterally win the battle, but with the right teammates at its disposal, there's little that can stop it.
Viking/Isida, a fairly common pairing before the global update of 2016, had declined sharply thanks to the overall decreased damage that forced players to look elsewhere. With supplies, specifically Double Power and Speed Boost, there's not going to be much standing in the way of this fearsome machine when keeping a monstrous metal wall at maximum health, letting it continue to pump plasma, sprays or ballistics into their enemies.

Best Scenario: Medium Map No Supplies Battles, Supply Wars, Large Maps

Mammoth

Har. You kidding me, right? It's easy to understand how Mammoth doesn't sound particularly effective, does it? Believe it or not, though, like Titan, it has niche roles that grant it potential in a select number of situations. It's a rare sight to find one of these machines nowadays – it is not an attractive combo to use, and neither, say many, a fun combo. Mammoth is for mass domination, not massaging lazy tanks from the back lines, isn't it? Coupled with the problem of Isida only being able to latch onto one foe at once, this combination slowly becomes one of the most tedious and painful to use in all but the teeniest of maps.
You have to remember, however, if you use it, that your tank is not good enough for playing with “cover”. You really have to chuck yourself out there and take the fire for your team. If your flag is in a tight space, and you can only approach it from a tight angle, Mammoth/Isida may be a good flag-sitter, as it can just take constant attack.
Best Scenario: Small-map Supply Wars. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________

The Strategic Tips to Isida Domination
Since almost all Isidas use their weapon in CTF, TDM and CP modes respectively, this segment will only effectively cover those regions. If you're looking for advice on how to use Isida in a DM... don't.

  • The most important factor to take into account when using Isida is the balance between attacking and healing. Many Isidas one will typically meet on the battlefield are either too focused on healing team-mates or too focused on capturing flags. The key to capturing the essence of Isida in a CTF battle is supporting your team to help aid you in capturing a flag, be it through your effort to keep your teammates alive or to grab the flag yourself and heal your supporters. You need to make sure though that your focus is capturing the flag, rather than running around healing teammates to no ultimate endpoint.
  • A crucial thing to remember if you are an Isida is that you are the healer. It is almost always best to drop the flag off to another attacker if you are together in an attack, so you can heal him as you return to base. Don't be selfish. It's a nice way to show you care about your team, and it likely will result in more flags being captured and, notably, more spoils.
  • It's key as an Isida to appreciate all players around you and not stick with a single player, only healing them (with exceptions made when your team-mate have the flag and need healing). You need to be always on the look-out for those who “need a hand”.
  • One of the most important points to stress for an Isida is to remember that if both flags are grabbed, you need to go to the attacking flag and help out your attacker if you are on middle ground. You are, or at least should be, a mixed priority player. You can let the defensive weapons, such as Smoky, Railgun, Shaft, or a defensive Freeze to clear out the threat with your flag. You are an Isida. You heal people, such as attackers, and you also provide support damage versus opposing attackers.
  • It is important to remember that if the enemy flag is in your base, and your flag in the enemy base, then at minimum one Isida should be sticking with the flag holder. Whether that be you or otherwise, it is always useful to have someone healing them in times of need. If you see them alone, don't be afraid to stick with 'em. If you're getting bored, remember that you're doing your entire team a service by backing up your flag-bearing teammate.
  • As an attacker, you require some basic Tanki skills in attacking, so I'd recommend reading Ranger7's “Attackers guide”. Not only that, but you should try to learn basic attacking skills, so your focus in a CTF game is supporting the “cappers”.
  • Isida should not be under-rated in its threat to kill enemies, as underpowered as their stats visibly are. Due to Isida currently having the highest damage per second, you need to know that, as an Isida, if you're healing a teammate that's currently dealing insufferable amounts of damage to an enemy, you have the potential to not only nab a kill in the end if you switch targets and sweep your beam over them but save your ally some energy for a secondary onslaught. Take the kills, and you'll be on your way to success with Isida's resources. One must realize that a solely healing Isida is not going to get you many points – which will lead you to not getting many crystals, respectively. However, as always, there is a balance with this – you need to know that healing is more important in general as an Isida, as that is your specialized effect.
  • Remember: you only get points once you let go of the space bar. Thus, if you are in the middle of healing when you die, you do not receive any points, due to the fact you failed to remove your space bar. As an Isida now, it is key to remember: if you are on very low health, stop healing every now and again by letting go of the spacebar. This will mean you can get extra points you would not get, should you held on and were suddenly killed.

A couple of actual Isida skills you can use that will help you in battle:

  • Use your conic range to your advantage, as it's far more variable with the Broadband emitters alteration. You will be able to attack or heal people on levels above you or further away from you, and altitude differences won't be much of an impediment.
  • Mine usage with Isida can make for a support unit surpassing all expectations. As with all short range guns, using mines as a standoff or delay tool can be a legitimate life saver, delaying opponents from brandishing their own short ranged weapons against you or simply halting the progress of offensive threats like Wasp. One of the best times to use a mine is during a close ranged confrontation with an attacker who wants your head on a pike. Wait for them to charge at you, lay a mine, and then back off a touch. Most will follow you and run straight into your loading mine. Also, of course, use mines when running away with the flag or backing up the flag carrier in tight spaces, as your “hunters” will very possibly be at least slowed down by them, if not killed off immediately.
  • Finally, something a bit more obvious, but Isida has no recoil. Thus, when you need to leap from a ridiculous height (e.g. anywhere in Madness), there are a few methods one can use, but the tried and true method is simple and reliable (i.e. Twist and Jump). Just turn as you leave the height in question (make sure you have suitable speed), and you should land straight up after rotating horizontally a few times.

______________________________________________________________________________________________________
In the final section of this Isida guide, we're going to look at the “fighting” -- that is, Isida's gameplay against all the weapons in Tanki, and the best strategy to confront all of them.

VS Smoky

Against a Smoky, an Isida needs to know before they go into close combat that if the Smoky does not hit them with a Critical Hit, then they'll likely do alright in a one on one situation, as most Isidas can outpower a Smoky of the same modification so long as they have same hull type. Granted, a critical hit won't do far more damage than usual, only sporting a 10% damage increase itself, but the fact that they have roughly a 20% chance of occurring that rises with each impacting shot.

Bearing the above in mind, it's often best to confront a Smoky as soon as possible. However, avoid giving them space to back into, as with all long-range guns. You need to limit them as much as you can to the possibility of them escaping you, so try and corner them into building alleys and into open space.

VS Firebird

Firebird is a weapon that needs to be dealt with carefully, to say the least. You need to know before approaching a Firebird whether you have the speed to keep up with them, or whether you are in a situation that means his burn will either be too low to kill you upon attacking them.

The perfect-case scenario would be coming to the Firebird around his most vulnerable position (where's he not looking, and when he has been either damaged or is low on fuel reserves). On the other hand, remember not to wait too long for that situation, for once your exposed tank gets touched by their burn for a while, you are much less likely to stay alive.

VS Twins

When you're facing a Twins, you have to realise that unless you use the advantage of abilities such as cover, your chances of survival versus a weapon with a higher cumulative damage rating is next to nil, especially when their ammunition is infinite while yours requires time to charge.

Using cover as an Isida is one way of being able to get yourself out of an awful situation and into a better one. Make sure if a Twins is coming to confront you that you don't automatically follow the train of thought that “I'm a short-ranged weapon; I need to get as close to that dude as possible. I'm going just to go meet him.” Moving directly towards an active Twins is a great way to remove yourself from the battlefield, as they're great at nullifying close ranged targets, especially considering their impact force can disorient a tanker's driving capabilities and send their aim all over the place. You'll have to try and outmaneuver as many bullets they send at you as possible and take maximum advantage of the time you have to hide behind barriers and walls.

VS Railgun

The obvious Railgun-pwning technique revolves around making them miss by ducking into cover, driving into them and attacking for a moment, driving back into cover, repeat. However, since light hulls that were capable of this were slowed drastically and Railgun's reload speed has been decreased, this tactic becomes a lot less viable. But since that's a standard movement tactic and not much of an Isida specific tactic, you may not have the opportunity to do that. So ultimately, what is the best way to deal with a Railgun as an Isida? If you can survive a Railgun and out-run him in pace, then often the best thing to do is to show yourself, outmaneuver them, and plow away at their health and hope to whatever you believe in that your hull health, Railgun's damage variation, and whatever resistances you may have active align in such a way to keep you alive for one more shot.

However, there are smart moves you can pull to fool an unwitting Railgun. As a fast Isida, make sure you are always going around the Railgun or moving at least, so their shot would be more likely to miss. You should do this in every opportunity you acquire, as standing still only makes you that much easier of a target.

VS Isida

It's not worth it to dwell on Isida vs Isida too much, but one other thing I can suggest is you ramming into them or at least moving a bit – that little bit of what I call the “white light” shining, gives you an advantage in the duel. If part of their beam misses at any point of when you are shooting each other, you will gain a higher amount of damage output on them than on you. You can also achieve this by ramming into them.

VS Thunder

“Use the Splash-Damage!”, to quote the Thunder “Best of” Guides said a few years back. It could be said the same with Isida. Use the Splash Damage indeed! Get that Thunder right up to you, so he's hitting himself, then when they've done the damage to themselves, you'll just have that much less trouble to deal with.

Thunder is a weapon where you have to approach them close-up to remove their threat. If they have space to back up into and see you from far away, you can count yourself dead. There's no reason to approach them – try hiding. The best way is to get close to a Thunder from the start – then you have them under your hand.

VS Freeze

Unless you are lucky and find yourself facing a Freeze, there is no reason to approach a Freeze head-on, unless you're in the mood for dying in an annoying fashion. You need to know that once a Freeze has room to back into and you are frozen, you may as well not bother moving – you're pretty much screwed, unless a teammate backs you up and kills the Freeze for you.

Thus, as an Isida, we need to learn ways to avoid the killer effect of the frost spouting devil. One essential technique involves ramming into a Freeze from either behind or preferably the side, then taking them by surprise by moving in the opposite direction of their turning turret. This will help you avoid being frozen until the last moment (by which time, hopefully, you will have killed them). You need to try and make sure you don't get touched by a bit of that Freeze, however, particularly when you want to run away with the flag. It requires immense skill to avoid the Freeze totally. A touch of that Freeze hinders your escape significantly, and if your hull begins to turn blue, you can pretty much call it game over.

Also, remember, that if you are in a group attack, and a Freeze mounts upon you, try and make sure you do not get touched by that Freeze under any circumstances. Since the flag-carrier is likely to be bombed under the Freeze, in particular, you should avoid him and attack him from an area where you are not going to be hit, then when the Freeze is (hopefully) killed, you will be able to pick up the flag from the flag-carrier's drop-off, and run away way faster than you. On the other hand, you can completely halt a flag-pursuer's progress by standing between them and the flag bearer, since Freeze's spray cannot pass through tanks anymore thanks to the '16 update.

You also need to remember that if you have the flag and are frozen, it is almost always better to drop it off to a different team-mate who is not frozen. Remember to charge back into the incoming Freeze, though, as they have just as much of a chance to swipe the flag back as your ally if you're not careful.

VS Ricochet

Ricochet's strong bullets and knock back are pesky annoyances for an Isida, and you need to learn the art of dodging and moving while shooting if you are facing one of these. If there's one thing a Ricochet doesn't like to see, it's his bullets missing a fast-moving tank weaving around them constantly. You should try and approach him, and make sure he can't use his knock back to run away and shoot you from a range. If you sense you are losing the fight, move into cover behind a non-planar surface while dodging his shots. This means no flat walls anywhere nearby for them to bounce projectiles from!

It's important to note that a Ricochet can do a lot of potential damage if you do not get close to him, so you need to remove him as each shot, particularly when drugging, is completely deadly.

VS Shaft

To finish this list off, the million dollar question: how do you face a Shaft as an Isida? If you sense a Shaft's eye on you as an Isida, move into cover ASAP. If he shoots you just before you move into cover, then you should be able to survive it unless they have a Double Power or higher modification. You then should try and come at the Shaft, either when he is looking in another direction or has just shot at a different person – whatever they're doing, though, go after him IMMEDIATELY. If, however, he remains trained on you, try to avoid his area of sight by going out of his range. Try not to drive anywhere that might be in their cross-hairs, as certain death or grievous injury is sure to follow. They'll get bored of you eventually or die. In a CTF situation, make these buggers your top priority, as they'll utterly ruin you should you decided to leave them unscathed.

Please note that those were for an Isida attacking an enemy; don't think that's how to heal those weapon users as well! If you're trying to heal a team-mate, the best tactic is to approach them and press the space bar. (Y'know, the only way you can heal them. Pretty straightforward for even the dullest of minds.)

Introduced on June 29, 2011, Shaft is considered the most powerful long-ranged turret. With its unique controls and gaming experience, the turret is known as the ‘legendary turret’ and is widely favoured and equipped by tankers, especially sniping-lovers and low-ranked players.

The most intimidating feature of Shaft is that the turret brings a decent amount of damage and impact force, which can almost one-shot every tank with light and medium hulls. The damage per shot of Shaft is the highest compared to other turrets.

Another feature that helps the turret stand out is its extremely long-range shooting. In almost every circumstance, Shaft can bring huge damage, and destroy tanks in one shot from one’s base to another, stunning the enemies in an instant. This, as said by tankers previously, made the game inequitable and unplayable, lying down the bitter controversies. As a result of the discontent of tankers, Tanki decided to add a laser sight to Shaft (The colour, either red or blue, depends on which team you are in. The colour is red in DM). The laser sight helps to disclose the position of your tank and hence diminishes the power of sniping.

Do you know?
1.      The arrival of Shaft was highly awaited by the community in 2011.  According to the Tanki marketing team, 3 purchases of Shaft were made in every second of an hour after the release.
2.      Before the Global Update of the balance of the game on October 20, 2016, Shaft could shoot through tanks.

Well, I am not here just to recall facts and history about Shaft. As a tanker with more than two years of experience, I think it’s a good idea to share how I build up a good account using shaft.

In my opinion, upgrading your turret is somehow wastage of crystals. Hopefully, after reading my five tips for effective sniping, your Shaft will also be dramatically upgraded!

Effective sniping tips: S.H.A.F.T
1.          Spacebar should not be released until the energy bar is full, so as to ensure a one-shot kill.

The damage brought by the Shaft increases as you charge up the energy bar. When the energy bar is full, your shaft will store up the maximum amount of damage, making it easier for you to get a one-shot kill against tanks with light and medium hulls. The more one-shot kills you can make, the higher your efficiency will be, and the more rewards and experiences you will earn.
(Provided that the double damage of your tank and the double armor of the opponent are not activated at the same time.)

Alternate scenarios:
A.    Your opponent has a heavy hull (i.e. Dictator, Titan, or Mammoth)

  • This depends on how strong you Shaft is. If you are using m3 shaft, one-shot kill is not a problem at all against m2 dictator. But try to avoid titan and mammoth.
  • Find a light-hull target. If you see a light-hull tank and a heavy-hull tank, you should go for the former. (Will be further discussed in tip 3)

B.    Double Damage of your tank is on, and the double armor of your opponent is not on.

When you see light-hull and medium-hull tanks, aim at them and fire immediately, perhaps in one second. The amount of damage is enough to make a one-shot kill. For heavy-hull tanks, press a bit longer, maybe 2-3 seconds. Remember, never fully charge up the energy bar in this scenario.

C.    Double Armor of your opponent is on.

In this scenario,

  • If you know the opponent has activated the double armor, (e.g. he has activated the overdrive), do not try to kill him, for it is impossible to make a one-shot kill.
  • If you don’t know whether the opponent has activated the double armor, you will know after shooting the tank. The damage brought will decrease by 50% if the double armor is activated. It will be your choice whether to make a second shoot or to find another target.

2.          Have a good hiding place for yourself

A lot of professional snipers managed to make lots of kills without being killed. Apart from being skillful, most likely the reason behind is that they have a secret hiding place, where they cannot be spotted by enemies easily. Snipers will come out of the hiding spot to make a kill, somewhere near the secret hiding spot, and then hide, waiting for the energy bar to reload, and the cycle goes on. It is not recommended to go too far away from the hiding spot to snipe. The closer to where you hide, the better.

The best hiding place for snipers should NOT be:

  •
  •  in or near the enemies’ base where the enemies roam about. (Sniping in your own base is optional, but highly recommended.)
  • at the centre of the map, where you will be killed in any directions
  • in a position above the ground surface, where your tank is completely exposed to the enemies and the enemies can annihilate you directly from their base.

The best hiding place for snipers should be:

  •
  •    at a place in your own base, where you can directly snipe the enemies in their base.
  •      a place where you can see the enemies and you will not be spotted.
  •      in a position where you can find walls, hills, or buildings to hole up yourself.
  •    at a place where there are isldas and shafts nearby. Islda will heal you when you are shot, and shaft will help you take revenge on enemies.
  •     at a place with bush which can help you camouflage (even better if your paint matches)

Some good examples:

  • Highways (a map for snipers): behind the walls in both bases
  • Brest: behind the walls of both bases
  • Brest: in the bush at the corner of the map
  • Tribute: the corner with grasses on the right-hand side of the red base (when facing the blue base)

3.          Always destroy enemies with light hulls or with certain turrets, especially shaft and islda

Aiming at light hulls:
Light hulls have very low protection. Known for its devastating amount of damage, one-shot kill against light hulls will be a piece of cake for snipers. For instance, wasp m0 and hornet m0 both have a protection of 1000 hp (assuming they are not upgraded), while an un-upgraded shaft m0 can bring 1500 hp of maximum damage. One-shot kill should be easy, isn’t it?

Aiming at shafts and isldas:
When you are sniping from your base, what’s your deepest concern? Definitely the shafts! When you are sniping from a great distance, the enemies can do the same! Always kill the shafts, so that you may not die in the hands of snipers.
Although the other turrets do not bring as many potential dangers as shafts, watch out for isldas! Isldas won’t directly kill you, yet they will help the shafts to kill you. Suppose you shot a shaft, the islda will heal the shafts, and the damage you made are all gone! The shafts will not die but will keep shooting at you, until the islda died. (That’s why it’ll be better with a shaft or islda accompanying you.)

 4.          Faraway enemies should always be your first priority

If you want to make more kills in a battle, in theory, you will aim at enemies which you think no one will be aiming at, won’t you? As a cold-blooded sniper, in order to make more kills, faraway enemies should always be your first target, because only snipers can kill them directly, in other words, there is a smaller competition against the enemy.

In most cases, snipers should not aim at enemies nearby. It will be the job of your teammates with short-range and mid-range turrets to finish the enemies off. It’s all about trusting your teammates.

 5.          The legendary tip: Use the laser wisely. Never let your enemy know you are aiming at him.

Some experienced snipers might suggest doing quick snipes, but I disagree. Although the energy consumed per shot is reduced, the energy bar is not fully charged up, and hence a one-shot kill is not guaranteed.

Here are two useful tips of how not to let the enemy be aware of your aim:

1.  Fool the enemies with the laser. (When there are more than one enemy in vision)

What to do:
Turn on your scope and aim at an enemy. Don't shoot at it; instead, wait for the energy bar to be fully charged. When you see another enemy nearby, aim and wipe him off as quickly as you can.

How this works:
As you are pretending to aim at the first enemy, he will most likely hide. On the other hand, the second enemy cannot predict that you actually plan to kill him, so he will come out and find a target to shoot at. He will have zero awareness of you, which is when you should fire at him.

2.  Hide the laser

This is a common, but also a very powerful tactic of experienced snipers. This tactic is especially useful against snipers.

What to do:
When you see an enemy trying to kill you, turn on the scope. Find a nearby object and aim at it, but don’t let the enemy see the laser sight. (*The object should be next to or near the enemy in your vision sight.) When the energy bar is fully charged, aim at the enemy and wipe him off, as quick as you can. The quicker you fire, the lower the chance of revealing your position.

How this works:
The enemy is completely unaware of your aim when your laser sight was hidden, so they are totally unprepared, probably finding a target to shoot at. Since your target is just next to the object where you are hiding your laser, all you have to do is to slightly move the laser and fire. The enemy will not escape and hide, so a one-shot kill is a piece of cake.

Bear in mind:

  •
  • Never ever aim at your final target while you are building up your energy bar.
  • Change your positions once in a while by moving around.

All in all, Shaft is an easy-to-use turret but requires many skills to be a professional. Upgrading your Shaft in the garage helps improve the turret, but it’s still not enough. Bear in mind the ‘S.H.A.F.T’ tips as you are playing the sniping role, and try them out in the game.
Good luck to your gaming career in Tanki Online!

Consolation - The Beginners' Guide to Turrets by @HarrytheDestroyer - 45,000 crystals

Overview
This is a guide to the system of weaponry in Tanki Online. This is the only guide you will find that will give you all the stuff you need to know, (aside from the Tanki Wiki, of course!). Well, here we go.

Turrets
Melee-range
Isida
The Isida is one of the most vital members of any team. Capable of dealing 1000 DPS at M3 level, it is a powerful item.

Garage description
Quantum physics and Nanotechnologies have come together to transform the humble, industrial welding outfit into an amazing tool of warfare. This miracle machine generates a stream of nanobots that are able to repair or destroy non-organic structures. The impulse emitter equipped on this turret channels the nanobots, allowing them to cross a gap of a couple of meters. The nanobots are also able to distinguish hostile targets from friendly ones, destroying enemies and healing teammates. Unfortunately, the nanobots cannot be used to heal one's own tank.

Interesting Features
The Isida can distinguish between allies and enemies. This is shown through 2 colours; orange – red for enemy, blue – teal for teammates. The Isida can also be used in 2 ways: Attack and Defence. Attack is when you activate all your supplies, drive in and cause destruction. Defence is when your team is getting attacked and are being destroyed; you drive in and heal up your teammates.
Another interesting feature of the Isida is that you gain XP for healing your teammates. This is one of the reasons as to why you see people with Isidas getting a much higher score than that of other players. The other reason obviously being that it is so powerful.

Summary
Overall, the Isida is one of the most powerful and useful turrets in Tanki Online, due to its tremendous power and stability.

Firebird
The Firebird has the second smallest range of any turret in Tanki Online and is essentially a flamethrower, dealing up to 669.41 DPS at M3 modification. But don’t let its range deceive you. It’s actually one of the most powerful turrets in the game.

Garage description
In tight urban areas, where the battle looks like it's being fought on an anthill, Firebird reigns supreme. Ideal in restrictive spaces, it can fry to a crisp any tank, be it heavy and clumsy, or light and nimble. Even a partially-full energy gauge is enough to roast an enemy, and if you use your resources effectively, you can barbecue several enemies at once. With this turret, it is best to attack from a very short range. This will allow you to quickly reach maximum temperature and move on to your next target. In the meantime, your enemy will continue to burn on its own, unless it is cooled down by a teammate.

Interesting Features
The Firebird is capable of dealing lasting damage due to its burning effect. Even if you take your aim off of a target, your enemy will continue to burn. Upgrading this feature will increase the burning time, burning damage and max range, ultimately making your Firebird do much more damage than that of any other melee range turret.
The Firebird is also able to counter the attack of the Freeze turret. If one of your teammates has been frozen by the Freeze, you are able to use the Firebird to thaw them out and get them back to the battle.
The Firebird is one of the rare turrets to have an XT variant. It was added to the game on the 10th of September 2015, and costs 500 000 crystals. The player needs to be in possession of a Premium account to acquire it.

Summary
In conclusion, the Firebird an essential team turret because of its ability to damage several opponents at once.

Freeze
The Freeze is the last of the melee range turrets and, as its name suggests, it freezes your opponents. It can deal up to 669.41 DPS at M3, the same damage as the Firebird.

Garage description
The concept of this formidable gun was born in a remote Russian village. A local inventor assembled it from a broken refrigerator and a vacuum cleaner, turning it into a snowball machine. An engineer who happened to be fishing in the vicinity, noticed this invention. Inspired by this concept, he started working on improving it, and eventually developed it into a powerful tank turret at a secret scientific-research institute. The turret sprays the enemy tank with a chemical freon mixture, damaging and freezing it, and slowing down its movements considerably. This effect can be countered by reheating the afflicted tank with a jet flame. Freeze plays a special role in battle. Its job is to slow down fast hulls, leaving them at the mercy of more powerful tanks. Try not to fall into the temptation of using up all of your energy gauge by playing snowball fights with your teammates. While this can be fun, a real tanker has more important business to attend to.

Interesting Features
The Freeze can do considerable to all your opponents, whilst helping your teammates. The Freeze is excellent for team battles because of its ability to freeze enemies, giving your allies time to finish them off. In comparison, the Freeze is also a formidable gun on its own. Freezing your enemies gives you the advantage of speed over them. However, using the Repair Kit supply will instantly cancel the effect. But if you keep your aim on them, it should not be much of a problem.
Another enhancing quality of the Freeze is its M2 alteration, ‘Corrosive Mix’. This multiplies the Freeze’s damage by 1.35%, making it more powerful. Unfortunately, due to this power, the freezing effect is disabled in order to balance out the weapon.

Summary
While the Freeze’s range is short, it is one of the most useful and powerful weapons.

Close-range
Hammer
The Hammer is the first of the close-range turrets. It is capable of dealing up to 105.88 damage per pellet at M3, and has the power equivalent to that of the Thunder.

Garage description
The team behind the development of this anti-tank turret, really thought outside the box. Instead of using regular armour-piercing shells, this turret fires shrapnel shells loaded with tungsten pellets. These are loaded into the turret using a robotic cylindrical loading system. The result is a turret that practically hammers enemy tanks. Due to its unique mechanics, this is a turret that is best used up-close and personal, because it loses its punch over distance. The high-density tungsten pellets from this turret's shell will also bounce off hard surfaces. Their mass is not enough to bounce more than once, however this is often enough to reach any enemy around the corner to knock off its aim or deliver the final, killing blow. Just make sure the pellets don't bounce back in your face.

Interesting Features
The Hammer has enough power to deal damage to several opponents at once, and the pellets it fires can ricochet off walls. This could be enough to finish off the enemy who has driven behind a wall, thinking they’re safe. Sadly, these pellets only have enough power to bounce once. Each clip has 3 shots, which is more than enough to destroy your enemy.
The Hammer’s power is also capable of knocking off your enemy’s aim. This may not seem like much at first, but if you hit them in the right spot, it is possible to turn a light hull around almost 180 degrees. This will most likely give you the time to finish them off or turn and flee safely.

Summary
While the Hammer’s reload and range is not that impressive, the damage and power it can deliver certainly makes up for its cons.
Twins
The Twins is one of 2 plasma weapons in the game and is the second of the close-range turrets. It deals up to 196.47 damage per shot and is very useful for knocking off your opponent’s aim.

Garage description
This quick-firing, double-barrelled weapon will quickly turn enemy tanks into lumps of molten metal. The impact of this turret's projectiles can knock off an enemy's aim, making it perfect for medium-ranged combat. Hitting objects at close range is not advisable however, as splash damage from plasma instability may damage your own tank. For tankers who are fond of automated firing systems such as bricks, there's the Stable Plasma alteration, which makes this turret at all distances by producing more stable plasma projectiles without splash damage. Additionally, the annoying sound from this turret serves as psychological warfare to irritate and distract enemies. Unfortunately, teammates often find it equally annoying.

Interesting Features
The Twins has an advantage over many other weapons: splash damage. This is useful for many combat situations. If you are fighting against multiple enemies, you are able to damage them if they are in a close proximity to each other, meaning you only need to fire at one to kill them all. It can also damage tankers that are sitting behind walls, barely visible.
The Twins also has the ability of a very fast fire rate and reload. This gives a tanker using it the advantage over others. It also makes the Twins great and very efficient in close-range combat. But be warned. Using this weapon in close-range combat increases the risk of the user taking damage from splash damage. For this reason, the Twins should be used wisely.

Summary
Even though the Twins splash damage can be used to great effect, any experienced tanker should be mindful of it and use it wisely.
Ricochet
As its name suggests, the Ricochet is a plasma weapon that can bounce off walls to hit enemies hiding around corners. Shots are able to bounce a number of times depending on the modification, and an M3 shot can do up to 355.29 damage per shot.

Garage description
The Ricochet is a plasma weapon developed by Siberian scientists. The project was commissioned as a next-generation weapon following the development of the Twins turret and was intended to address specific problems with firing distance and the safety of plasma weapon usage. For this project, 22 specialists worked for 3 years in an underground bunker, without ever seeing the light of day. The result is this unique turret that fires plasma projectiles coated in a smart minus-field. If a Ricochet projectile collides with a tank, it will explode. However, it will bounce off any other surface. This gives Ricochet the unique ability of hitting targets that are hidden behind obstacles, knocking off their aim or destroying them. Unfortunately, these bouncing projectiles can be equally dangerous to the shooter, as the smart minus-field isn't smart enough to recognize the difference between shooter and enemy.

Interesting Features
The Ricochet is very useful for hitting enemies that aren’t in sight. The speed of each shot is fast compared to other turrets’ shots. An M3 Ricochet shot can bounce up to 6 times, until it either runs out of energy or hits an enemy tank. Be wary that the shot can bounce off a wall and hit you in the face.
Another contributing factor of the Ricochet is that its shots can quite easily knock off an enemy’s aim. This is often effective enough for you to deliver the killing blow. This is a characteristic shared by many other weapons, all having this power in order for the tanker to dominate.

Summary
The Ricochet is one of the best mid-ranged weapons. However, it is advised not to use this weapon in close quarters or tight corridors, as you may find your shot zooming straight back at you.
Medium-range

Smoky
The Smoky is the first weapon that every novice tanker begins with. At lower modifications it isn’t great, but level it up to M3 level, by which it can deal up to 574.71 damage per shot, it will dominate.

Garage description
A legendary turret, normally mounted on light and training tanks. Inexpensive and easy to operate, this turret is a favourite. Mount it on a light hull and destroy heavy tanks that lack mobility. Additional upgrades can further improve the destructive force of this turret. Keep in mind that the damage of this turret is reduced over distance. However, mixed with its regular shells, this turret's magazine includes high-explosive anti-tank (HEAT) warheads that will deal the same amount of damage irrespective of the distance. These shells aren't loaded in any particular order, so there's no way for the tanker to know whether the next shot will be a standard one, or a HEAT. This also means that any enemies who try to use long distance to escape this turret, will be in for a nasty surprise.

Interesting Features
The Smoky is an anti-tank weapon, capable of dealing high damage per shot. Its critical hits do 3x the damage of the regular shot, and is always a surprise to any fleeing tanker. Unfortunately, there is no way to calculate when the critical shell will be loaded in. Therefore, it comes as much of a surprise to you as it does to your enemy. Upgrading the weapon will increase the chance of a critical hit.
The Smoky’s shots have a high impact force, knocking off your enemy’s aim and sometimes even knocking them backward. Paired with a fast firing rate, this makes the Smoky great for close to medium-range combat.

Summary
The Smoky is a great weapon for medium-ranged, but to increase the likelihood of a critical hit, each shot must impact on the target. Steady your aim and you should be fine.

Striker
\The Striker is the only missile launcher turret in Tanki Online. It has a slower fire rate than the Smoky, but at M3 it can deal up to 970 damage per shot.

Garage description
When it comes to tank warfare, the anti-tank rocket is often considered the greatest menace. The Striker anti-tank complex has a rich tradition of delivering punishment to enemy lines over long distances. A targeting system enhanced by an artificial brain for aiming assistance, makes this turret more accurate and deadlier than ever. The turret's unusual design, featuring side-mounted barrels, can make it slightly more challenging to calculate the line of fire, and the inattentive tanker might suffer a few unfortunate incidents due to splash damage from misplaced shots bouncing into nearby obstacles. Many tankers distrust this armoured box stuffed with microchips and artificial intelligence. They claim it looks like the severed head of some robot from the future, which might one day go nuts and start destroying everyone in its path.

Interesting Features
The Striker is equipped with a laser targeting system. When the tanker keeps their aim on an opponent, a barrage of four homing missiles will zoom towards the target. Unfortunately, this can be avoided by simply just hiding behind a wall. However, if you can catch them off guard, you should get the jump on the enemy and take them out.
The Striker, along with its laser system, also has a single shot firing system, not unlike the Shaft. This can be quite useful if you don’t have the time to lock on to your enemy, or you are caught off guard. Avoid using the Striker in close quarters, as you may suffer from its destructive splash damage.

Summary
The Striker is powerful, but try and avoid using it in close-range combat, as its splash damage will blow you to pieces. Use the laser system at longer ranges and your enemies won’t stand a chance.

Vulcan
The Vulcan is a weapon not unlike the modern-day minigun. It sports 6 barrels and can deal up to 476.47 DPS, making it very destructive at medium ranges.

Garage description
If your intention is to turn your enemy into a colander, this is the perfect turret for you. With its six medium-caliber barrels and robotized stabilization system, this turret spits out an unlimited amount of armor-piercing bullets at incredibly high speed. Its insane firing rate can even overheat and damage the whole tank if not closely monitored. This doesn't mean you have to stop firing when that happens. In such cases, a teammate with Freeze or Isida will be able to cool your tank down so you can keep dishing out punishment. Additionally, due to the high firing rate, gyroscope stabilizers are required to prevent the barrels from locking up. This has the unfortunate disadvantage of slowing down the turret's horizontal rotation speed, however it works great for keeping the turret on target when another tank is trying to knock off his aim.

Interesting Features
The Vulcan’s fire rate really shames other turrets. However, there is one thing you need to be mindful of: overheating your tank. See if you can get an ally with Isida or Freeze to help you out. If this cannot happen, purchase a Firebird protection and it will actually protect you from burning damage. If none of this can be attempted, do your best to actually stop firing to reload. The Vulcan’s reload is quite fast and you’ll be back in the battle in no time.
The Vulcan is the second of 4 XT turrets. Vulcan XT costs 500 000 crystals, and you have to have Premium to buy it. Vulcan XT was added on the 25th of December 2015.

Summary
The Vulcan may be dragged down by its overheating parameter, but its high fire rate and damage really rises it up above others.

Thunder
The Thunder is a medium-ranged weapon that shoots highly explosive shells. At M3 modification, its capable of dealing up to 900 damage per shot.

Garage description
This medium-caliber turret was designed based on the experiences gained from the usage of the legendary Smoky turret. It is the best choice for those who enjoy dynamic battles. Its ammunition consists of high-explosive, armor-piercing shells of a new generation that can damage multiple tanks standing in close proximity. However, this splash damage feature can be a severe disadvantage to the inexperienced or careless user. Its considerably fast reload time gives this turret an undeniable advantage over heavy tanks. Equipped on a fast hull, Thunder can be deadly in the right hands.

Interesting Features
The Thunder is capable of damaging several tanks in a close proximity to each other, due to its high splash damage. Shoot it at the floor just next to a corner and demolish the opponents who think their safe. This makes the Thunder great for TDM battles, as it can kill more than one enemy with only one shot.
The Thunder also has a reload time similar to the Smoky. This ensures you can just keep pumping out shots and dominate your enemy. This is one of the reasons why the Thunder is great on light and medium hulls.
The Thunder also has an XT variant. First, you need to be in possession of a Premium Account and 500 000 crystals. It was added on the 10th of September 2015, along with the Vulcan XT.

Summary
While the Thunder’s fire rate might not be that impressive, pair that with high splash damage and a quick reload, and your enemies won’t stand a chance. Just make sure you don’t blow yourself up.
Long-range
Railgun
The Railgun is the first of the longer ranged weapons in Tanki Online. It can deal up to 1414.12 per shot and has been a fan favourite from the start.

Garage description
If medium-calibre turrets don't satisfy your thirst of destruction, this weapon is for you. The projectiles from this large-calibre turret have a huge initial velocity, and bullets with cores of depleted Uranium alloy. They are heavy duty, ultra-precise, and are able to penetrate the armor of multiple tanks standing in the line of fire. This is the perfect weapon for trench warfare over long range. Keep in mind that the Railgun has a significant reload time, and the turret needs to warm up briefly before firing. Additionally, while the Railgun is warming up to fire a shot, the tip of its barrel will shine brightly, which is an important cue for any experienced opponent. Railgun combat is similar to fencing - beautiful, strategic and challenging. The Railgun is not recommended in proximity combat against turrets specialized in short-range attacks.

Interesting Features
The Railgun has the remarkable ability to fire a shot and have it go through multiple enemies. This makes the Railgun great for attacking bases with multiple opponents inside. It also is great for people who enjoy collateral sniping.
The Railgun also has a small charge up time of 1.1 second. This has advantages and disadvantages. The delay gives you time to aim and angle your shot. However, this also lets your opponents know when you’re about to fire and therefore have time to get away.
Another interesting parameter of the Railgun is it’s shot power. If you move a lot, your shot will not have as much power, therefore not giving as much damage. On the other hand, firing while staying completely still will give you maximum damage. Unfortunately, you’re a much easier shot for your enemies if you don’t move.
The Railgun also has an XT modification. It costs 500 000 crystals and you need Premium to get it. It was added to the game on the 14th of July 2015.

Summary
The Railgun is one of the most powerful and popular guns in Tanki Online. Its looks, parameters and functionality have made a favourite amongst many tankers.
Magnum
The Magnum is a long-ranged artillery launcher. At M3 it can deal up to 2052.35 damage per shot, and its shots launch in an arc depending on the aim.

Garage description
The real magnum opus of tank-building mastery. The biggest calibre that can be fit on a tank hull, creating the most powerful blast. It sports the longest barrel of any turret and has the biggest recoil control. Its recoil can easily overturn a light tank. There is nothing in this howitzer that cannot be considered the best. However, the targeting system is incredibly demanding. Due to the huge calibre, the turret needs to be welded to the tank hull. As a result, the Magnum is unable to rotate horizontally. Additionally, the turret's projectiles follow a parabolic trajectory, making it very hard to calculate where the shot will land. However, once mastered, this mechanic will allow you to hit enemies in unreachable hidden places, and at any distance. To land the perfect shot, you will need an intuitive knowledge of the Theory of Strength of Materials, mathematical analysis, thermodynamics, the theory of the function of complex variables, and of course ballistics. If all else fails, shoot directly upwards and run away before the shell comes back from the stratosphere and annihilates you and everything around you.

Interesting Features
One interesting feature of the Magnum is its incredible power. It has enough to completely flip a light hull and knock several tankers back with one shot. The Magnum can charge its power and, if fired at the right angle, blast a shell across the whole map.
The Magnum also has a very interesting aiming and firing system. The turret has to be welded to the tank, so it can’t rotate horizontally. On the other hand, the barrel can move vertically, creating a shot that arcs when fired. You are also able to charge up the shot, from 0-100% power.

Summary
While the Magnum has some flaws, it is a great weapon in tank warfare, capable of dominating the enemy team with just a few shots.
Shaft
The Shaft is basically a sniper turret. It has the highest damage in the game, with an M3 doing up to 2647.06 damage per shot. It has a guidance laser system, like the Striker.

Garage description
The top choice for tankers who love playing the sniper role, the Shaft is a heavy anti-tank gun that can one-shot kill most tanks. In non-combat mode, this turret is a multipurpose piece of equipment with many functions. It can prepare coffee, order pizza and pay the bills. However, in battle, it performs perfectly well as a piece of combat equipment. The main characteristics of the Shaft turret is its additional sniping mode. In this mode, the turret charges up to fire a shot that can deal multiple times the amount of its regular shot damage. While using this mode, the tank goes into siege mode, and will not be able to move. Nailing the perfect shot requires you to take into account the parameters of the density and temperature of the atmosphere. However, this intellectually demanding process is made easier with the use of and auxiliary guidance laser. Unfortunately, this laser can also be easily detected by the surveillance system of any modern tank, therefore, experienced tankers know not to stay too long in sniping mode, as this will give away their position, and they will soon find themselves in unwanted company.

The Shaft has 2 ways of firing: quick-fire and snipe. The quick-fire is used in close quarter battles, as it’s able to fire off a shot with just a tap. The sniping mode is used when you hold you shot until your yellow bar is empty, and you can fire off a shot that does 4.5x the damage of the quick-fire. However, you cannot move when in sniping mode, and you are susceptible to other tankers.
The Shaft also has a guidance laser, not unlike the Striker. But this guidance laser has no lock-on. You just point it at a foe, and they’re gone. Experienced tankers know not to stay in sniping mode too long, as the laser gives away your position very easily.

Summary
While the Shaft isn’t great at closer ranges, it makes up for that with its infinite range and high damage.

Consolation - A Review of Tanki by @CamoCommando - 45,000 crystals

tanki-online.jpg

Tanki Online is a 3D, online, multiplayer game. It was released to the public on June 4th, 2009 in the open beta stage. A company called AlternativaPlatform created and developed Tanki Online using Alternativa3D 8. AlternativaPlatform is an independent studio, was founded at the end of 2006 and is based in Perm, Russia

Tanki Online's Income

Tanki Online defines itself as a free-to-play game. That raises the question: How do the game and its developers generate revenue? Any company, such as AlternativaPlatform, needs to generate constant income so it can run. Examples of why are:
  • Pay workers' wages
  • Pay bills (As in utility bills, property taxes, etc.)
  • Buy new equipment for better goods and/or services
Tanki Online gets all of its income from in-game purchases or micro-transactions. Tanki Online takes pride in the fact that they do not use advertisements to make money. When earning money from in-game purchases, there are four "Cs" that are a driving factor for in-game purchasers or "buyers": Content, convenience, customization, and competitive advantage. Tanki Online capitalizes on convenience, customization, and competitive advantage to make sure they have a constant flow of revenue coming from in-game purchases.

Getting something easier or quicker is called convenience. Tanki Online's developers use convenience to their advantage by allowing players to buy Premium. By purchasing a day or months of Premium, a player gets an added bonus to the experience points and crystals (the game's currency) they earn at the end of a battle.

Customization is the availability of special cosmetic attachments only available through in-game purchases. Usually, a player uses these cosmetic attachments to express himself/herself in the online world. This also creates an emotional bond as well. Tanki Online uses Paints in the game's shop. These Paints are only available in the shop and are not available anywhere else.

Competitive advantage describes the desire to win. In this case, by in-game purchases. This can also tie into convenience. Online games do not usually allow a straight buy advantage. This would upset the non-buyers and would cause players to leave. Tanki Online uses Product Kits as a competitive advantage. A Product Kit allows a player to get a certain tank at a lower rank than would normally be allowed. As you can imagine, this would be a huge advantage over other players. But with the right game mechanics and balance changes, a game such as Tanki Online can afford to have this in the game's shop without losing players.

Tanki Online works hard to keep its daily players of about 100,000 happy and to increase that number. If the players are happy they will recommend their friends to play it, thus the number of players increases. When an online game increases its users there is a higher chance of the percentage of buyers increasing in number. If an online game, such as Tanki Online, is free, potential players won't have to stop and consider the value of buying it or ask themselves if it is worth their time. They can just jump right in and find out. Then, if they really like the game, they might consider investing a little money into it.

On March 2, 2017, Tanki Online was launched on Steam. Steam is a digital gaming distribution software developed by the Valve Corporation and is written in C++. Its release date was on September 12, 2003. Steam has a range of over 10,000 games, available in 26 different languages and 237 countries. In 2015 it was announced that Steam had over 125 million users. Through Steam, users can buy, play, and share content from Valve and from other independent game studios.            AlternativaPlatform being an example of one of these independent game studios. So, on the 2nd of March, AlternativaPlatform released its best product, Tanki Online, on Steam in hopes of the game gaining a bigger audience. A little under three months after this release, Tanki Online launched a Steam Pack only available through Steam. This pack had the cost of $24.99. Through advertising on the world's biggest online gaming platform, Tanki Online generated revenue.

Tanki Online has also used social media to gain more users. Sites such as YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram have hundreds of millions even billions- of users. Any company would benefit from having social media connections and advertisements. Tanki Online uses YouTube, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and Google+ to communicate with its users and publicize itself.

Tanki Online's Programming

As a private, independent studio AlternativaPlatform it created its own game engine: Alternativa3D 8. Since its release in 2009, Tanki Online has gone through many updates and changes. From graphics to game mechanics, Tanki Online relied on that engine to keep it running. But, there were two attempts to attempts to update the game's engine.

At the end of 2009, just a few months after the release of Tanki Online, AlternativaPlatform decided to make a new version while still developing Tanki Online at the same time. Tanki Online 2.0 was supposed to have better quality and realistic graphics. Supposed to perform better and supposed to have a more convenient user-interface or UI. Unfortunately, this project was never completed. The project's planned release date was June 4th, 2011. The new Tanki Online planned to use Stage3D APIs available in Adobe Flash Player 11. At that time, Flash 11 provided 2D and 3D enhanced functionality for realistic imagery and smooth gameplay, accelerated graphics, and optimized video capabilities. By leveraging this new technology, AlternativaPlatform planned to make Tanki Online 2.0 a game that could stretch across multiple platforms. Mobile, console, and social networks; not just PC. AlternativaPlatform even had a demo and a playable version on its test servers. So what went wrong? We don't know. Tanki Online wrote in a news thread that the release of Tanki Online 2.0 was being postponed because the game was "…not perfect yet…" The project was scrapped after one and a half years and the new features moved to Tanki Online.
mqdefault.jpg

September 15, 2016. The release date of the most anticipated game in the Tanki Online community, Tanki X. Tanki X uses Unity to perform on a graphics level above Tanki Online. Unity is a cross-platform game engine that will help

AlternativaPlatform to be able to develop client-based games. Tanki X is still running today and has been successful thus far. It is currently running in open-beta and has no planned release date. The platforms it runs on are Microsoft Windows, MacOS, and Macintosh operating systems.

These two attempts at creating a more modern Tanki Online did not come without out reward. Tanki Online 2.0 helped develop Tanki Online when the project was scrapped. All the work on Tanki Online 2.0 was put into Tanki Online. Being the first attempt for AlternativaPlatform, it helped bring the idea for higher level gaming. This brings us to a time 7 years later where a new version of Tanki Online comes out. Tanki X is still in open beta which is a good sign. Some of the implications of new features in Tanki X can be seen in Tanki Online. Two improved versions of Tanki Online; one failed and one still ongoing.

Tanki Online itself is a browser-based game. AlternativaPlatform created Alternativa3D 8 to be the game's engine. The engine is based on Adobe Flash Player technology and, just like Flash Player, uses ActionScript 3 as its programming language. Originally, Alternativa3D was a privately owned, company game engine, but now is open-source. Currently, AlternativaPlatform is trying to update Tanki Online to HTML5, a markup language and is the fifth and current version for HTML. According to AlternativaPlatform and Tanki Online's developers, Tanki Online is and always will be a browser-based game.

Alternativa3D 8 is a 3D engine used to create and animate 3D objects. The engine is based off of Flash Stage and is similar in many ways, like the fact that they are both built on a hierarchical structure. This is a system of ranking and organizing program so each element of the system (except the top element) is a subordinate to a single other element. Hierarchical structures make programs easier to write, read, modify, and extend. Even though Alternativa3D 8 is 3D and Flash Stage is a 2D they are both use a coordinate system where each object is placed in its own coordinate space.

Most online games today use Unreal Engine or Unity to operate. These modern engines are cross-platform and provide better graphics and rendering capabilities. These engines use C++, C# (C sharp), and JavaScript as their programming languages. These engines are successful because it allows game developers to create something without writing actual code. For those who know code, these engines also allow full source code access. These engines are so advanced to the point where they allow game developers to work with artificial intelligence and virtual reality.

ActionScript 3 is the programming language used for Adobe Flash Player and Adobe AIR, but most importantly, Alternativa3D 8. ActionScript 3 is object-oriented. An object, in programming terms, is a component that contains methods and properties needed to make a certain type of data useful. An object's properties are what it knows and its methods are what it can do. Being object-oriented means that the programming language is centered on objects rather than actions and data, unlike C or C++. Most programming languages

Tanki Online's developers used AlternativaEditor to create all 77 of the game's maps. AlternativaEditor is an Adobe AIR application, also created by AlternativaPlatform. The application uses 3D elements called props to create a map. These props are what actually appears in the game. The props can range from shipping containers, houses, and even the ground. The only non-three-dimensional objects in the game are trees and bushes. These are sprites and sprites are 2D bitmap images that are not affected by normal 3D properties such as lighting or other special effects.

Conclusion

So now you know how AlternativaPlatform generates its income and how Tanki Online is programmed. Let's go over it. Tanki Online was created by AlternativaPlatform, an independent studio. AlternativaPlatform gains income from Tanki Online's in-game purchases. The reason this is so successful is that it has a high amount of users and capitalizes on three of four major driving factors: Convenience, customization, and competitive advantage. Tanki Online uses Alternativa3D 8 as its game engine, once a privately owned engine, but now is open-source. The engine's programming language is ActionScript 3, the same language as Adobe Flash Player and Adobe AIR run on. It makes sense since Alternativa3D 8 was based on Flash Player. The developers of Tanki Online use AlternativaEditor to create the game's maps. It is also worth noting that AlternativaEditor is an application for Adobe AIR.

Jack was a runaway orphan. His parents were very abusive. They beat him, they harassed him, they called him many rude names and then finally Jack had enough. He ran away from home at the age of 10 and from that point on he has been alone. After many years of being alone, he was informed that his parents had both committed suicide. He has been eating whatever he could find; emaciated with hunger. Jack sleeps under trees, and sometimes he is lucky enough to find a park bench where he can sleep on. He tries to not get spotted by the police, knowing that if they do find him he would be put in an orphanage.

Jack wakes up one morning with an unusual smell coming from a house. Many people were outside fiercely talking and doing inappropriate signs with their hands. Trying to not be seen by the men, he creeps closer to the house. There he finds many police officers and a young lady in her 20’s. Her microwave had just exploded and her boyfriend had just been knocked out when a piece of the microwave hit him in the head. Knowing that he had heard enough he walked away hoping not to be seen. As he starts to walk away a tall thug looking, man, stops him.

Jack felt paralyzed from the head down. He could not move a muscle. The man pulled out a railroad spike. Big and jagged, very sharp. Thinking he was about to die he closed his eyes. Nothing happened. When he opened his eyes the man had vanished. Jack scrambled away from the site terrified of what had just happened. He was desperately trying to get back to a park or a place where there were many people. There he would feel safe.

Jack collapsed on the ground with the exhaustion of running all the way to a park far away from where he once was. He decided to take a nap on the nice, cold grass and then look for food when he woke up. He had some very nice dreams. His favorite dream during that nap had been when he had an amazing dinner and loving parents. This is what he wanted as a boy.

When Jack woke up everything felt dark and arid. There was no light except for a tiny glimmer of something shiny on the wall. It looked like an ore of some sort. Jack started to walk towards it. It was a piece of gold. As Jack was about to touch it, the piece of gold turned black. Jack heard low whispers that sounded like snake noises. A panic rose over Jack. Not daring to turn around he listened. Just when he was about to turn around the same man, that stopped him once before, was in front of him.

The man stared at Jack. Jack did not dare look away. The man turned around and started to walk. Jack thought he should follow, so he did. The man led him into a room. It was a monotonous room. There wasn’t much to it. There were many of the same things. Jack sat down on a chair. As if by command, a glass of water appeared in front of him. Jack did not hesitate. As he drank, a torrent of water appeared out of thin air and swallowed Jack. Then, everything he had just seen, was gone.

When all the water was gone Jack realized he was surrounded. A group of around thirty men holding what seemed to be very large, sharp knives. They were closing in. All of the men were chanting the same thing. “Get back to the tree, get back to the tree.” They said this is weird, almost creepy voices. Jack closed his eyes hoping everything was over and then suddenly he was back at the same house he was before, but this time something felt very different.

As he looked around he knew that what the men had just said meant something. Walking around he could not find any pedestrians. Everything felt deserted and empty. It felt as if the world he was once it had never existed. Jack kept walking around but there was nothing, just nothing. Just then he heard something. He turned around and saw a gleaming tree. Then Jack remembered. This was the tree where he first slept when he had first run away from his home.

Jack walked towards the tree. Everything in his body felt tense. He walked towards the tree, examining everything about the tree. The shade of colors, the leaves, the trunk, even the grass around it. Jack suddenly tripped and his face hit the tree very hard and he passed out. When Jack woke up he realized he was in a room that he had never seen.

Jack got out of the bed and started to walk around. He was wearing clean, comfortable clothes. For once in his life, he felt safe. He walked around and saw a man and woman. He did not feel safe for much longer. He approached them with caution. The woman said, “What’s wrong sweetie?” Then Jack realized these were parents. Jack felt kind of weird. He remembered having mean and cruel parents, not friendly parents. Then he realized, those 12 years of his life had been just a dream. Everything he had just experienced had been a lie.

Consolation - Story by @anshm002 - 45,000 crystals

Randeep and his family lived in a village named Kaver Nagar near the banks of river Kaveri. Every day after school, the family of three would go to sit on the banks of the river. They would then eat, play and have fun over there. This was until Randeep was of seven.

One day, his mother was walking on the banks of the river when her leg slipped and she fell in the river. She had no control over her body and the gush of water took her with it. No one knew about the incident and it remained a mystery.

A few days later, at night, when he was sitting by the riverside, he could not stop himself from remembering the time spent with his mother near the river. Tears started rolling down his cheeks. He visualized the image of his mother’s face forming in the river and felt communion with her. He was amazed. The reflection of the moon and the constellations looked like jewelry on her face. The drops of water that came on his hand were like his mother’s hands which were trying to console him.

From then, he started feeling proximity with the river and thought that his mother was with him all the time. Whenever he was away from the river, he used to feel incomplete. People used to admire his love for the river. Every day, his father would have to call him home or else he would even sleep over there. When the sounds of the waves were heard, he would feel that his mother was talking to him. For him, the river was not just a source of water but a mother to him. On the annual river festival, he was the one who took part most actively. Randeep found the river very holy thus named it “The Ganges of South”. He was saving money for many years and at last, when it was his mother’s fiftieth birthday, he completed the making of temple Kaveri and inaugurated it. He used to grow plants at the banks of the river to keep it fresh and clean.

A few years later, Randeep's father said, “Son, you are eligible enough to do a job and I think you should start working." In reply to that, Randeep said, "Father, there are no job opportunities here and I do not want to go far from Mother River." His father said, "You will have to earn for the temple and also for your family or else we will have no money left. I have been saving money so that when you go for a job, you will have no problem." Randeep, though not happy, agreed. He applied to many companies for a job.

A few days later, when Randeep came back home from the river, he saw that the door of his house was open and the lights were off. He became alert and careful while entering inside. Suddenly, the lights turned on and he saw many of his friends and the people of the village. In a chorus, the people said, "Congratulations". It was a surprise party organized by his father as he was selected for a job in Chandigarh as a manager in a mobile company.

The next day, he bid farewell to everyone and then sat by the river for a couple of hours. He then said, "Mother river, I am going away from you but will never forget you." Then he went to the village railway station with his father and left for Chandigarh.

He worked very hard and was promoted to the designation of the Director of the company. He earned well and donated some portion of his earnings to the temple. His father used to organize feasts for the poor in the village. He also donated some of the money to the village Sarpanch so that the village could develop.

He was unable to talk to his father for a few months due to network issues. Finally, when he was able to talk to him, he was shocked to know what happened. He came to know that with the development of the village, there came a huge catastrophe. People had started polluting the river and were not conserving it. A factory, which was opened near it, released all its chemical wastewater into the river which polluted it. Randeep could not tolerate all this and he came back to Kaver Nagar. He went near the river and saw its condition. It had become narrow and dirty. He said, "I have already lost my mother and I do not want to lose my second mother!" He felt very sad because could not feel the droplets of water on his hand which he felt earlier and the sound of the waves was also negligible and the conversation with the Mother River mellowed down.

He made his mind up and decided to convince a few people and together start a campaign to save the river Kaveri and for him, his mother from dying again. He decided to start from his village itself. He called ad urgent meeting in the village assembly hall and tried to motivate people not to pollute the river. With the help of the government, it was made clear to the owners of the factories near the river that if they do not treat the wastewater before dispersing it into the river, the factories will be seized. He traveled to every village and town which were on the banks of the river and motivated the people over there.

With the power of his education, he wrote many blogs on the internet related to saving the river Kaveri. He, along with his team started growing trees on the banks of the river.

A change was visible after a few years and the water level in Kaveri grew up again. Randeep was very happy and he did not feel like going back to Chandigarh so he stayed in his village happily ever after.

Very nice job to everyone that participated! Excluding the winners that were selected to appear in the Issue, everyone else is free to submit their article to the AWS so they can be admired by peers.

Questions & Answers

Q: Can I use images in my article?

A: Of course you can! Visual aides add depth to the article and can reinforce content. It is not a requirement but it can make your article pop in comparison to others.

Q: What kind of fonts, sizes, and colors can I use for my article?

You can use any of the fonts available in the Font drop down box. Use 12, 14 or 18 point fonts; any smaller is hard to read and any larger is too obnoxious. You can use colors in your article but using super bright colors like Lime, Red, Blue, Cyan is not recommended, find lighter or softer tones of the desired color (by clicking More Colors...). Using more than 3 different font colors is also not recommended.

Q: Why do I have to submit my entry on the forum PM?
A: The Tanki Newspaper publishes articles on the forum and we want to see how well you can format your article within the bounds of the forum instead of on a different platform. Don’t worry, it’s a simple interface.

Q: Can I make edits to my article after I've submitted it?

A: Yes you can. Please send as close to the finished product as you can. You cannot edit your article after 22:00 UTC on June 27th because that is when submissions close and judging begins.

Q: Do I have to format my article in the forum PM if I have already formatted it in Word/Google Doc?

A: Yes. The chances of your article appearing as you intend it to are very slim. The spacing is often different and we know most of you can format text there. We want to see how well you can format an article on the forum.

Q: What do you mean by Consistency when judging entries?

A: We want to see that the first three items are executed throughout the article and not in certain parts. We are looking for articles that stay on topic and not veer off. As few grammatical/punctuation errors as possible is ideal, but that is a challenge on its own. Lastly, it also has to look presentable.

Q; Why does this contest last so long?

A: You can only enter in one category on one account, so you only have one shot. We want you to take your time with your entry and write the best article you can.

If you have any questions please post them here because other people may have the same question. We will copy and paste relevant questions and answers into this post when necessary.

ALSO! Don't forget to check out Issue 75, the latest edition of the paper.

Is there any maximum word limit to any of these? I'm doing a story based on an English exam assignment, and I like to describe stuff. Which can lead to an enormous word count pretty early.

Also, good luck everyone!
