multiple helper symbols on avatars

Recommended Posts

sometimes I'm wondering just who does this wiki admin think he is talking to me about what he considers okay to do in the forum... only to later find out he's also a forum mod...

so the problem is that if a helper has more than one helper position he can only use the avatar for one of them. I suggest that for such helpers the symbols for their helper positions can be all put into their avatar.

I know that avatars can be redesigned so this should be easy to do.

for example below is a wiki admin+battle admin+forum mod+reporter

As Viking4s already mentioned, some of the helpers would have an issue to get all of their symbols into the avatar box ?

Do you really need those logos on the avatar, or would it be sufficient if the helper positions were listed in the profile section of each respective helper?

I already had this idea, not remembering if I published it. Basically include 'Groups' module showing user's groups and allowing easy searching through those groups. This should be possible, as per my experience with basic forums.

This would mean creating a new avatar for every combination of jobs there is, of which there are lots. Fortunately nowadays helpers can only have a maximum of two jobs (e.g. wiki and forum for me) so it would be two avatars, but it would still make it very difficult to manage forum avatars. Currently administrators simply decide which avatar is more important and display that one.

I'm not sure what you mean by already mentioned here, he said it after you said this ;)

yes, i think avatar is better as that's the first thing people look at.

It takes like 5 seconds to add that symbol..

TBH this forum is small enough that everyone here already knows who does what.

yeah really. i see people mistaking reporters for mods all the damn time.

New forum avatars have to be made and approved by developers. And as soon as something has to go through developers you can assume it will take at least 50x longer.

Instead what should be done is that all helpers get a generic helper avatar 9and generic admin avatar for admins)and there should be an additional tag next to their name which lists the groups they are in. That way not only would you be able to see all of the helper's areas of responsibility, but it would also help new users understand who is who, since the avatars themselves are not exactly the most obvious indicators. Hell, it took me months to figure out the difference between chat and forum mods.

New forum avatars have to be made and approved by developers.

It works like a combo of tank and turret:

You give all avatars without any symbol on them to the devs + all symbols separately as well.

They agree to use them in any combination, you're done.

Still the admins have to compile an individual avatar most of the times out of this box of aproved avatars+symbol. It takes aprox. 10 minutes (start programm, load pictures into layers, align symbols at correct positions, save it, export as single-layer-png, upload that to the forum, assign and test it).

I do like Maf's proposal with the tags more.. it's easier to administrate, and you can read, instead of guessing pictures.

Maf could finally be recognized as Wiki Admin, instead as puzzle wizzard.

why not just do both? some people don't come to the forum often so they don't know how to access forum profile so they only see the avatar

Actually his post was the second in line, right after yours. He posted his answer while your topic was still invisible and not-yet-aproved.

But it's possible to work around that a bit :)

Puzzle Wizard sounds way better though

Completed.

Together with the Forum's engine upgrade and new capabilities / flexibilities it brought, the inconvenience of not immediately knowing which of the staff positions a certain helper may be occupying (if they've got more than one role) without having to browse the whole Helpers' list is no longer existent, due to all of the respective helper positions now being listed under the helper's avatar (whether they've got one or multiple positions), as well as in their Forum profile.

As to which avatar (and main Forum group colour in the Online Users' list) is being displayed in case a helper has multiple positions, it still remains the most relevant/important one.

Additionally, different helper titles/Forum groups can easily be distinguishable and separately recognizable now, as there are no more confusing helper Forum group names (e.g. ForumArbourparttionModeratorsEN (now called Forum Moderator Candidate)) and shared group colours amongst different helper groups, which have now been assigned uniquely to each respective helper group. Developers, Community Managers, Tech Support Specialists, Helper candidates and admins visiting our Forum from other community locales now have their own group names, too.
