Matchmaking undermines socialising

Recommended Posts

I started another small account to see the experience that new players have in this game.

The issue:

Lot of friendships start if you exchange some comments during the nice battle, and then, while you waited for the timer to restart the battle, you talked a bit more and friended someone. This is now gone. The combination of

  • matchmaking
  • the continue button at the end of a battle, which puts you back to the lobby screen

leads to faaar less friendships between the tankers.

Why is that critical?

Friendships are a very important trigger for players to log in, waste time with their buddies and enjoy funny, epic and awkward moments. Friends keep the player base together, and so existing players stay longer in the game before they finally leave after months/years

Idea:

Everyone that pushes the continue button, should stay in the battle-ending screen and be able to chat with the participants. By using the other button someone can leave to the lobby immediately.

During this time the players can watch the score board in the upper right section of the screen; see a matchmaking waiting dialog in the lower right section of the screen, and are able to chat in the whole left section of the screen.

By having the battle map still rendered in the background, with all the tanks in inactive standby, you still have the impression to be in the battle, and the players can talk about it, get to know each other, and start friendships.

Also the waiting time towards the new battle would not feel so long.

This bothers me a lot too. I've played multiple other games with a similar mechanic and it was always frustrating when as soon as the battle ends everyone leaves within seconds, giving you no chance to even compliment another player or finish a conversation someone started during battle (which I obviously couldn't reply to because the battle was happening). And it's inconvenient to have to add someone to the friends list and invite them to a private battle in order to talk, or try to send them messages via communicator PM.

I think that when the battle ends, tanks should also continue driving around for a minute or two, which even solves the issue of uncaught gold boxes, which drop at the end of the battle and disappear.

No, thanks.

Most of the time, it is just hate-filled conversations taking place against opponents who are not better than you.

They don't care just in case you didn't notice:)

Lately, I've noticed that there are less players sending friend requests. But drop a few gold boxes and see how many friend requests you get.

None.   I hate getting Gold Boxes in containers.....SO WHAT!!.....There is no way to say "thank you" or "alright!".

I flush the gold boxes as soon as I get them.  Number of friends added?  Zero.

AND what would it matter if they did add you as a friend?  Can't join a battle.

Yes, friendship is one of the most important topics of Tanki Online. This is the building blocks that best keeps Tanki Online alive and running.

This is a good idea especially now that the time that the end screen is longer.

Maybe even have an optional Chat button besides Continue and Exit.  This would allow anyone interested to stay in a previous battles small chat room.  Maybe add an "invite player to post-battle-chat" on the left click menu.  This would go a very long way to generating friendships in Tanki.  If someone wanted to cuss you out for killing them too many times, you could just exit at any time.

I really hope something like this will be implemented.

I played Tanki before and many people wanted to be friends.  It was actually kind of a chore culling your friends list and accepting or rejecting new friends. Now I play and there is nothing.  No one interacts on a personal level any more at all.

Good idea with the chat button.  Maybe even use the existing Continue button and chat is opened while anyone that wishes another game waits in queue for the new game.  this would be much better than staring at the fictitious "average waiting time" screen.

What’s more? Having friends in tanki is more important now than it ever was before. Honestly, I think that even wish the recent trashy updates, tanki is a good game. But now it’s dying. People are motivated to stay because they have friends, and they can invite each other to battles and make the battle more fun, which is part of what's keeping tanki alive. This could be the next step in giving tanki a few extra years to live. Because that would certainly be nice.

I completely agree with the OP. MM is just one of the many changes to Tanki in the last couple of years that have been detrimental to the in-game community spirit.

This change would be one step towards helping to regain some of that. Naturally, those who wish-to, can move-along to the next battle.
