This strategy rarely ever works. You have to play in the noob ranks for it to work (where everyone is no kill) and you probably won't have the drone at that rank. You can survive the meteorite blast but someone is just going to pick you off at the same time.

In theory, your idea should be correct.

 

In practice though, usually the dude with the Lifeguard drone has often caught 3-4 golds before people begin to try to kill him/her before the gold drops, as most players tend to go "no kill!" when the gold siren starts.

I always kill enemies (gold diggers) during gold fall, they are very easy to kill because they do not hide or shoot back.
