Pretty much self-explanatory. For example, I'm a captain and want to buy an M2 Twins (that unlocks at Lieutenant Colonel). But there don't seem to be any twin kits around. So I just buy an M2 Twins itself for double it's original price. Double the original price is a bit heavy, but I guess impatient buyers (or hard working non-buyers) are willing to do anything. Besides, you can just wait for a kit to come out. You can also buy hulls, modules and drones two ranks earlier. Also, sales do not affect equipment if you want to buy them two ranks earlier.

Oh, like you and Grand don't win every contest :P although admittedly, I have 5/10 Smoky and Wasp M1, so both are on their way to M2

 

As for the idea? Meh. I don't like it. Kits are better, although some turrets, especially Shaft, need more kits. Still, bad idea.

shaft has not much kits :(  so more kits will be fun specifically a Viking -Shaft one will be great :)

This would simply redefine the "standard" unlock ranks and items costs to be +2 ranks and 2x cost.  This would become the standard every player would have to meet. 

 

Kits are in the garage only like 1 week out of 6. These items could be bought any day of the year. Kits are a defined group of 4 items. This is buying a la carte. This idea is not "like kits".

 

What is today the standard cost would become something only for the noob class of players. This would greatly sharpen the difficulty of competition in the game. Buyers would benefit much much more than would free2play players.

 

There is a lot to be said about taking a long hard look at TO's rank / unlock ladder. It is teh most Byzantine advancement ladder I have seen in gaming, I reckon. But this proposal is not the long hard look needed..
