Rewarding people who helped carry the flag

Recommended Posts

At the moment, only the person who captured the flag receives the reward, which really doesn't help the team environment of CTF (and ASL to a lesser degree). Handing off the flag gives zero benefit to whoever gave it up, so most people will simply ignore the interests of their team to keep the flag for themselves, even if they're at 1 HP, the enemy is on their tail, and there are plenty of teammates ready to snatch up the flag and complete the job. No one thinks "How can I help the team get the next flag?", rather "How can I get the next flag before my teammates do?" We all know about the jostles that take place at enemy bases as everyone scrambles to be the one standing over the flag point when the flag reappears there. Too often I see players even sabotaging their own flag carrier, blocking their way, flipping them, etc. in an attempt to force the carrier to give up the flag and claim it for themselves. While it is good to have some competition within the team, I think this goes too far.

To solve this, we could have a system to reward players for helping carry the flag.

Here is my idea:

Cappin a flag gives a certain amount of score right?

How about when a flag is captured, all teammates who carried the flag will receive a percentage of this score. This percentage is EXACTLY EQUAL to the percentage of the time the player held the flag between it leaving the enemy base and it being captured. For example, if it took 10 minutes to get the flag captured, and I was holding the flag for 5 minutes of that 10 minutes (50%), I would receive 50% of the score from the capture. Likewise, if I carried the flag for 2 minutes of that 10 minutes (20%), I would receive 20% of that score. The player who actually captured the flag will also receive some more score (so that there still is a benefit to being the one who does the capturing, therefore keeping a bit of competition :D)

Under this system, a critically injured teammate can hand off the flag to another teammate and still be assured that their effort will be rewarded. Under the current system there is no benefit to this; you forfeit all reward. You also cannot abuse this system by passing the flag back and forth, since the total reward for capturing the flag is always constant.

I think this is a fair, reasonable, and abuse-proof system for rewarding flag assists. What do you think?

(PS: If using time can somehow lead to the system being abused, we can use distance instead)

This is how the system used to work before a recent update. Now you just get a certain amount of EXP (25, I believe) if you helped capture a flag.

A poor hard working guy manages to take off the flag after many hard tries, many deaths, and maybe sacrificing speed boosts, double armours and repair kits for the team. Gets to the base, waits for the flag to be returned. Flag is returned and tries to capture. Greedy teammates(90%) try the best to push and flip him. he dies and someother guy captures, and recieves all the score ( and crystals at the end ). The Poor guy gets nothing, Try again.

First of all, the "poor guy" will get 25 score for helping capture the flag. Second, the situation you described is so rare that it's not even worth considering. In the past 2 years I have NEVER seen someone try to push and flip a teammate for the sake of getting the flag.
