Improve mechanics of "ghost" phase during spawn

Recommended Posts

So a few days ago I posted an idea to remove the "ghost phase" after spawning because I felt it was really unfair to the spawning player when they spawned right next to an enemy: http://en.tankiforum.com/index.php?showtopic=375179

A few people pointed out some significant flaws to that idea, including allowing spawning players to surprise unsuspecting enemy players by suddenly spawning next to them without warning, and then another (not duplicate) idea hit me, that eliminates those flaws:

When you spawn, you will get into the ghost phase just like always. However, instead of automatically materializing after a few seconds, you have to press the spacebar to materialize. This allows you to wait until it's safe to materialize before doing so. After you press the spacebar, you have to WAIT A FEW MORE SECONDS BEFORE YOU MATERIALIZE. This is to ensure that you can't just "pop up" next to someone (which Maf pointed out was possible with the first idea) and attack them without warning. This version of the ghost phase would be exactly like the current one (player is invincible, can't use/pickup supplies, can't fire, tanks and shots pass through it), EXCEPT it would have two additional restrictions: you can't move, and you can't turn your turret, since one of my friends pointed out that letting the user choose when to come out AND letting them move around would mean they can just saunter into enemy base or stalk someone while staying invincible  :P.

This should ensure that you don't just suddenly get jumped by a spawning player (they also can't immediately move or attack because they have to wait a bit after pressing spacebar before they actually materialize and are able to do stuff), at the same time the spawning player can now wait until it's safe to materialize before doing so. The invincibility can't be abused since you can't do anything until you lose it by materializing.

It also means that i can go grab a snack after i die and know my tank will be safe until i get back.

What do you think of this idea?

:)

Valid

This is only possible if another feature is added that prevents players moving too far. Otherwise you'd be able to spawn and ghost your way into the enemy base, then materialise next to their flag and escape with it. Or do the same thing with gold boxes.

imagine 10 people spawning all at once at the gold  that'd be more chaotic than it is now

Just add a time limit.

In other words, this should be invalid because you can already do it in a ridiculously inefficient way that also blocks out half the screen. Seems legit.

And the most important part of the screen too.
