On the 20th of July, 2018, Tanki released one of the most awaited and speculated about updates. The Juggernaut update was finally launched. As the name conveys, the Juggernaut is indeed a force to be reckoned with. In its mode, modestly called “Juggernaut” and abbreviated as “JGR”, every tanker in the match attempts to try to kill the user of the  Juggernaut. In a few words, it is a one tank army against an army of tanks or an unbalanced TDM game. In this article, I’ll be going over what the juggernaut mode is as well as covering a few tactics to both, be and beat, the Juggernaut.

History

75px-Museum.png

Not much to see here. For the past few months, Tanki had in fact been hinting at the upcoming Juggernaut mode for a while. The first time it showed up was when it was found in the garage of a developer. Most players, needless to say, were left completely confused and in the dark. By the 19th of July, most people, however, had a reasonably good understanding of what the Juggernaut was and what it could do.

A few bits of useful information with Juggernaut:
  • The user’s micro upgrades determine micro upgrades and the level ( M0, M1, M2 and M3) of the Juggernaut.
  • If you become the Juggernaut, you will have the same protection modules and paint as you did before you became the Juggernaut.
  • Buying protection against Striker or Railgun to defend yourself against the Juggernaut is similar to trying to find all real roots to the equation “y = x2 + 1”, useless.
  • Juggernaut has a unique overdrive which can send tanks flying in the air if they are too close, essentially making it a decent tool for parkour should it be added to Pro battles.
  • The repair kit from the overdrive will heal you much faster than a regular repair kit or a repair kit used by a non-Juggernaut player.
  • The only supply you can use is gold boxes. Nevertheless, Juggernaut users can still pick up other supplies, although only the repair kit will help your Juggernaut. However, activating your overdrive will also plant a mine.
  • While other tankers cannot see it, Double damage, double armour and speed boosts are always active for Juggernauts. Strangely though, this does not seem to lower the damage you inflict on a Juggernaut user.
  • Drones and consequently batteries, cannot be used if you are the Juggernaut.
  • Juggernaut users have two Railgun barrels (although only one can be charged up and fired). To compensate for this “weakness”, This version of Railgun has extremely quick reloaded, much like Smoky.
  • The Striker on the Juggernaut can fire six missiles, instead of the regular four, and also targets enemies significantly faster than Striker. It is not possible to fire a single rocket as attempting to do so will charge up your Railgun.
  • A Juggernaut has HP ranging from 5000-10000 HP and is faster than Wasp M4 at a whopping 13ms-1 as opposed to Wasp’s just slower 12ms-1.'

So How correctly does the Juggernaut mode work?

310px-JuggernautBanner.jpg

I’m delighted you asked. If you hadn’t, Flexoo would’ve made me pick up a dirty sock. The Juggernaut mode is a fusion of the Deathmatch and Team Deathmatch modes. The Deathmatch part is that any tanker may attack and destroy any other tanker. The Team Deathmatch component comes in when there is a Juggernaut to hunt since most players will team up to try and destroy the Juggernaut tanker. At the beginning of a match, the server selects a tanker at random to become the Juggernaut. The player to kill this Juggernaut becomes the next Juggernaut. Unfortunately, it doesn’t matter if you inflict 9999 of the 10,000 damage unless you kill the Juggernaut you don't become the Juggernaut. As soon as the current Juggernaut is defeated, an announcement will pop up at the top of the screen saying something to the effect of “<Insert player name>” is the new Juggernaut. This transition generally happens in a matter of seconds. Additionally, when another player becomes the Juggernaut gets a red icon with a skull on it. This icon is visible only when you aren’t near the Juggernaut. If you are near the Juggernaut, then just going where everyone is going or going in the direction tanks are flying is a good idea. Lastly, there are killstreaks for the Juggernaut user, which help other players gauge how long a tanker has been the Juggernaut for.

How to survive as a Juggernaut

Naturally, I wanted to end my article here. Unfortunately, I was told to rant on some more. Getting to be a Juggernaut in itself is an almost herculean task. It comes down to the finest of details, such as landing hits at the right time, not getting hit and more. Once you become the Juggernaut, you will most likely want to be the Juggernaut for a while. Following are some things I found to be extremely helpful in surviving as the Juggernaut.

1. Camp!

By far, this is one of the most antagonised things in all of Tanki. Most, if not all, players loathe campers. Regardless, if you wish to be a Juggernaut for a long time, this is very important. The reason for this is that both the turrets useable as a Juggernaut (Railgun and Striker) are poor choices for close ranged combat. Additionally, even with the increased reload speed of the Railgun, the turret simple cannot turn fast enough to compete with enemy Freezes. Being a mobile attacker (as in going around the map and attacking enemies) is not advisable as you will struggle to keep up with enemies. That’s not even the biggest problem. By far, the biggest issue is that enemies can and will attack you from all directions. Camping, especially while being against two or more walls, enables you to see virtually any enemies planning to engage you. By staying in the corner of sorts, this risk is, and you can generally see most of your enemies. The small problem with this tactic is that doing so may lead to you getting hit by long-range turrets (since shorter range turrets won’t be able to attack you). Consequently, Magnum, Railgun and Striker protection is highly advisable. One important thing to keep in mind is that you should keep changing your camping locations. Being in one place will be a bad idea as you will end up being repeatedly attacked and with even more frequency.

Striker.pngRailgun.png2. Use your turrets wisely!

Juggernaut comes equipped with two turrets, that is Striker and Railgun. While this may seem ample, not using them correctly will ensure that you don’t stay the Juggernaut for a long time. Generally speaking, the Railgun(s) should be used on enemies who are approaching you quickly or enemies who are quite close to you. Traditionally, Railgun has only one barrel and should a player be too used to playing with the regular Railgun, using the one on the Juggernaut may be difficult as the shot will be a bit to the left or right side. As such, Striker should be used for attacking enemies at long range, provided that your enemies don’t keep on using the peek-a-boo tactic, in which case, moving from your current location or using the Railgun is advisable.

Overdrive_ready.png 3. Use your overdrive properly!

One of the strangest things I see people do as the Juggernaut is simple using the overdrive when there are no enemies nearby. If you wish to use your overdrive, make sure you use it well. Juggernaut has an incredibly unique overdrive, which allows it to push tanks away and even send them flying. There are a few scenarios at which this is a great idea. The first scenario is if enemies surround you. In this case, activating your overdrive will not only push them away but give your tank a few seconds of respite from the incoming damage. Since your enemies would be disoriented, escaping during these few seconds is a great idea. Another scenario when this might be useful is on a bridge or a ledge. If you have a few enemies who are attacking you on a bridge, then this is a great idea. Most of the time, the overdrive will send your enemies flying off the bridge or dangling on the bridge, buying you some time to escape or destroy enemies. If you use your overdrive in the best possible manner, you will manage to be the Juggernaut for a long while. In totality, while this aspect of the overdrive may seem pretty minor at first, it can be devastating in the right hands.

4. Use appropriate protection!

Module_m3_preview.png

Juggernaut’s base turret is Railgun. As is almost always the case, this means very slow turret turning speed. For this reason, and the new buff for Freeze, using Freeze protection is essential. Past that crucial requirement, you have much choice in what protections you want to use. Generally, choosing Freeze protection, with protection against a mid ranged turret and a long ranged turret is ideal to make sure you are well-equipped for all ranges. If you prefer to stay in a corner and camp, Magnum protection will be critical as it will protect you from enemies you cannot see. Additionally, Striker protection will also come in handy if you’re much for camping. If you plan to keep moving around the map, Freeze protection is an absolute must. I would also suggest Firebird and Magnum protection as most Firebirds will try to hunt you if you stay mobile. The Magnum protection is an essential component as well because Magnum can whittle down your HP very quickly unless you have protection against it. All that aside, don’t forget to use common sense while deciding which protections to use. If there are Freeze or Firebird users, then don’t use Freeze or Firebird protection. The ideal time for equipping protections is before you start hunting a Juggernaut so that you can have the right protections when you become the Juggernaut.

20px-6809c52f.png 20px-Cdffcc5b.png 5. Be aware of your surroundings and don’t overestimate Juggernaut’s armour!

One of the mistakes some tankers make is thinking that Juggernaut is entirely invulnerable. This isn't the case. If you keep taking hit after hit, your tank will be pummeled apart, and you will die. Naturally, you shouldn’t keep running away from your enemies because being Juggernaut is just a waste if you do that. The key is to find the right balance. As a rule of thumb, if you encounter three or more enemies at a time, immediately leave that location and go to a new one. Unless you do, you will most likely be cornered by enemies and destroyed. That being said, make sure you keep attacking enemies as using Psychological warfare can induce an adrenaline rush for your enemies, which might make them move rashly, letting you destroy them. If you are being attacked by more than a single Freeze, press shift (to activate your overdrive) and get away from there as soon as possible. In contrast, evading turrets like Shaft and Striker is much more comfortable as you can hide behind a wall, leaving them unable to attack you.

Becoming the Juggernaut

As most tankers are aware, becoming the Juggernaut is no easy feat. At almost all times, the player who is the Juggernaut will be trying their best to make sure that you cannot become the Juggernaut. You’ll have to give it everything you’ve got, and even then there’s not a guarantee that you will become the Juggernaut. For that reason, Following are some pieces of advice as well as a few combos to help you become the Juggernaut.

1. Don’t try to go toe-to-toe with a Juggernaut if you have no plan.

Preview_Juggernaut.png

This is the biggest mistake anyone can make.. I routinely see Hornets and Wasps, up-close and personal with Juggernauts. They either get sent flying through the air or destroyed. Think of yourself as Batman and think of the Juggernaut as Superman. If you (Batman) were to go in a head-on fight with the Juggernaut (Superman), you would lose within seconds. However, if you fight with tact and wit, you can quite well come out on top (Kryptonite in the case of the analogy). In a nutshell, come up with a plan before you decide to attack the Juggernaut. For example, if the Juggernaut is above on a ledge and coming down, position yourself so that the Juggernaut lands on top of you. Once that happens, use all the firepower you have to take down the Juggernaut. Naturally, this strategy works best when the user is using Twins. For turrets such as Isida or Freeze, wait for another enemy to engage the Juggernaut. Once this happens, sneak up on them and start attacking them, preferably while circling them. For longer range turrets such as Railgun and Magnum, you should be a hunter (pun intended) who stalks his prey. Follow the Juggernaut since the moment it spawns and tries to keep a mental record of how much damage (approximately) the Juggernaut has tanked. Make sure you only fire when you are confident that the Juggernaut will die because otherwise, you’ll make it an easy kill for someone else.

2. Use proper protection!

Module_m3_preview.png

Before you start thinkings things like “Well, he told us earlier that there’s no protection against Juggernaut. Why does he now advise us to “use proper protections,” ?” allow me to clarify. It is indeed impossible to have any protection (barring double armour) which will let you take hits of any kind from Juggernaut for prolonged periods of time. My point is, make sure that you are well-protected from at least 4-5 tankers in the match. The thing about Juggernaut mode is that nobody is concerned whom he or she has to kill to become the Juggernaut. Consequently, you may find yourself in the line of fire, which is undesirable. Thus, using the correct protection is of extreme importance. Lastly, if you are a few shots away from becoming the Juggernaut, and then you die at the hands of an enemy, it will be quite irritating (in fact I feel a swell of pity for your poor computer just thinking about it).

3. Pay attention to the map you’re playing in!

400px-Maps_banner.png

One of the critical things is paying attention to the map you’re playing in. In a map like Fort Knox, using a Shaft is a pointless effort. Similarly, using a Firebird or a Freeze in Highways is equally worthless. Paying attention to the map you’re in doesn’t just mean that you know which map you’re playing in and equip a turret accordingly. You should know all possible routes to get to a single place, or all the ways you can use to escape if you get overwhelmed by the firepower of the Juggernaut. This will also help if there’s something of a traffic jam near the Juggernaut. Additionally, getting to your enemies even a few seconds earlier can mean the difference between killing the Juggernaut and just helping someone else do it.  As a rule of thumb, you should use close to medium range turrets (barring Vulcan) for medium-sized maps like Fort Knox. For Larger maps, medium to long range turrets (excluding Twins, Ricochet and Hammer) is ideal.

Good combos for hunting the Juggernaut

Now that I’ve covered the most of the essential things to do to hunt the Juggernaut successfully, Following are some combos which are great at destroying the Juggernaut. I do realize that Tanki isn’t a one-size-fits-all case. However, I generally find these combos to be highly effective.

The Ghost

Kit_ghost_small.png

Combo: Wasp and Smoky with Freeze, Twins and Magnum protection

Ideal for: Quick attackers and tankers who are skilled at making delicate maneuvers.

This is by far one of the most underestimated combinations in Tanki. Most people tend to disregard Wasp as a hull for Parkour or XP/BP, while Smoky is frequently considered one of the weakest turrets in all of Tanki. Nevertheless, with the help of the Precision Targeting system alteration, this combo can turn into a stealthy assassin. As is probably evident, both Wasp and Smoky tend to make for rather quick paced skirmishes and battles. The key to racking up kills with this combination is using speed to your advantage. If you can circle the enemy juggernaut, landing hits all the while; they’ll be forced to use their Railgun since the Striker will have a hard time locking on to you. If this happens, they will still struggle to hit you with their Railgun since the turret on Juggernaut cannot turn quickly enough to counter you. Other than this strategy, you can use Railgun’s signature peek-a-boo tactic to whittle down the health of  Juggernaut. The high speed of this deadly duo can wreak havoc if used correctly. If you try to tank your way through becoming a Juggernaut, you will die almost instantly. The boost of the critical damage can make the turret stronger at times when you need it, which means that you can also steal Juggernaut kills. Freeze, Twins and Magnum can destroy a wasp in a matter of seconds or the case of Magnum, a single second.

Contact Destroyer

Kit_sniper_small.png

Combo: Shaft and Viking, paired with Freeze, Striker and Railgun protection.

Ideal for: Players who can steal kills well, as well as those who'd rather be done in a single shot over a barrage of shots.

I didn’t expect this pairing to be quite so useful as it is. I imagined that my poor Viking would make the next episode of Destroyed in Seconds. Fascinatingly enough though, this combo managed to help me become the Juggernaut several times. I call the combo “Contact Destroyer” because it requires the least number of hits among all other turrets (at the same modification) to destroy Juggernaut, at two full powered shots. The problem comes when you try to hunt Juggernauts which are moving or which manage to make you miss. The easiest way to counter this problem is by parking your tank horizontally against a wall. This way, it will be a very challenging feat to make you miss. The heavy capacitors alteration will further bolster the damage Shaft inflicts. Despite Shaft’s immense damage, timing your shot is of utmost importance because if you don’t hit the Juggernaut exactly when it is weak enough to die with a single shot, you’ll have wasted the only chance you had to help your enemies. The Freeze and Striker protection are vital because they will often to catch you by surprise. The Railgun protection is useful in long ranged duels.

Marauder

Kit_master_of_the_taiga_small.png

Combo: Viking and Twins, paired with Freeze, Striker and Magnum protection (use Twins protection if you don’t have the Stable Plasma alteration).

Ideal for: Players who cannot aim but are good with bricks. Players who can deliver successive blows quickly and without taking too much damage.

At first, this combo does indeed seem a bit like a fly trying to kill an elephant. The reason is simple. Twins fires plasma which manages to deal at best 440 damage points. At first, this seems exceptionally underwhelming to most tankers, but unlike Vulcan where you have to turn your turret meticulously, Twins lends itself well to much more straightforward and straightforward combat. Paired with Viking, a Twins user can wreak havoc in the battlefield and take down Juggernauts if used tactfully. One of my best moments with this combo was when a Juggernaut spawned on a ledge above. I knew I couldn’t engage it in a proper fight, so I waited until it tried to come down. Then, I drove under it and kept firing, painstakingly holding the Juggernaut on top of me. Within a minute or so, I managed to take it down. Granted it was an extremely troll-like method to take down a Juggernaut, Twins’ unlimited ammunition allows you to do so. In regards with protections, Freeze is required as you will quite often encounter the turret and unless you have protections against it, lose. The Twins protection is primarily to be used if you don’t have the Stable Plasma alteration, although it can be beneficial against other Twins. Alternatively, Striker protection is an excellent idea if you do have the stable plasma alteration as Striker is used very frequently to hunt Juggernaut users and since Twins requires. The Magnum protection is to protect you from being killed quickly by Magnum users.

Lava

1v104gN.png

Combo: Firebird with Viking for equipment, and Freeze, Twins and Striker protection. The “Compact tanks” alteration is a great idea here.

Ideal for: Players who have a fair degree of proficiency with the almost infamous circling tactic.

I was quite surprised by the effectiveness of this combo. I expected to be left in the dust as other tankers managed to take down the Juggernaut, but I managed to take down the Juggernaut a good many times. It is worth noting, however, that the Juggernaut can easily defeat the combination in a head-on fight. As such, the best and most dangerous tactic with this combination is to wait for another enemy to engage the Juggernaut and then to sneak up on the Juggernaut and then attack it. Alternatively, you can try to circle the Juggernaut in the hopes that they don’t land a hit, but this is generally a very challenging feat to accomplish. The Freeze and Twins protection is to outlast said turrets at close range duels, while the Striker protection is to help you survive Striker users when they target the Juggernaut.

The results

Naturally most players would wonder if I had actually done all the testing I claim to have done or if I am just saying I did. Also people discriminate against text-walls, which I find to be unjustified. Therefore, I decided to incorporate pictures of me using these tactics in-game, with this article.

adsdasd.png

Conclusion: Juggernaut mode is pretty exciting (at least for me) and using it was entertaining. I hope I managed to show you something that you never saw (or not, in which case I imagine there’ll be lots of comments about that). In a nutshell, don’t think yourself immortal when hunting the Juggernaut and go in without a plan. If you are the Juggernaut, don’t keep moving and make sure you are in a corner because otherwise you’ll get attacked by enemies from all directions.

Seriously, no explanation of the Juggernaut origin?!

There is a bit of Juggernaut history linked to TO - search for juggernaut on the forum (I&S especially). When it was first introduced to an MMO game: CoD MW3.
There is also a bit on the Hull design from Hazel, who said it was inspired from ... (see here http://en.tankiforum.com/index.php?showtopic=369662&p=6446343).

And a good summary from hazel too:

You din't add hammer. Hammer M4 with DD cause 2160 Hp damage. 5 shots(with alteration) with DD is enough to hunt down juggernaut. Also most of the juggernaut don't use hammer protection.

I didn't add in Hammer because of the delay between shots. It's quite rare to find a Juggernaut which is just by itself, and since that is the case, using Hammer means that timing is of extreme importance. Shaft is similar in that respect (in fact better as it does well over 3000 more damage with DD at M4, which doesn't factor in the "heavy capacitors" alteration). Also, you have to be closer with Hammer which always ends up being more dangerous against Juggernauts.

Thanks for pointing that out! I didn't try to go too in-depth with the history because I felt that It'd be best if I focused on how to become/be the Juggernaut.

Not entirely. I left out Freeze as it requires much greater difficulty than Firebird, although the results can be better.

Whaaat? Freeze is a noob turret now IMO. The damage is so high, even after it gets nerfed. #LossOfRespect.

Kidding. Great article.

Thanks! I know that Freeze is (or was) overpowered. The reason that Firebird made it but Freeze didn't is that Freeze users are unlikely to be able to take down a Juggernaut. The thing is that Freeze protections on the Juggernaut and Juggernaut's overdrive will render it useless. This means that basically, you just end up wasting your whole charge to weaken and slow down the Juggernaut for others to kill. Granted, the same arguments can be made for Firebird, but Firebird deals after-burn damage which means that even if you end up flipped you still have a chance of killing the Juggernaut, no matter how small.

That is not entirely true. Striker protection is useless against 6 rockets. But Railgun protection is not useless. Juggernaut can't one shot you if you use Railgun protection (40% +).

Juggernaut uses a special turret, Terminator - Railgun and Striker protection do not apply on it.
