But what about the current daily missions? The stars surely are not worth replacing them, or are they?...

I think the stars are worth replacing the current daily missions, since there is really not a reward you can't get from containers, it just might work out for the best.
I'm thinking that the stars should be given according to rank, like the daily missions prize, 5 stars = normal container, 10= better container and so, it's up to you if you want to redeem a low chance container or wait and gather stars for a legendary type one.

I have posted something similar.

All daily missions will be replaced by stars , that means even the weekly chain will get removed. 

Now developers need to balance the economy in such a way that casual players get the same rewards they were getting right now while players who play more should get extra rewards just like the war.

5 stars = 2 or 3 containers

15 stars = 4or 5 containers

30 stars = 7 or 8 containers (This is an example , the exact values will have to be decided by devs so that game economy isn't affected)

or maybe getting the stars once you complete all three missions? but this would require immediate replacement of the missions after you do all three

Yeah, it would be a good idea to have stars in giveaways so that players can earn lots of containers.
